30 years ago today.
My first time in California!

We passed Bill Graham on the ski lift on the way up the mountain.

So glad we made it!

I'm really interested in knowing how/why a PRS guitar ended up in this concert advertisement.

Is there a connection to one of the musicians on the bill somehow?

In 1991, Paul Reed Smith was still very much an underground/"players" type of instrument, and had only had their first mainstream release that same year. The internet didn't really exist yet, and so the graphic designer would have had to go well out of their way to obtain a color PRS image suitable for print, rather than something more available, easily identifiable, (one of Jerry's guitars) and/or mainstream (fender/Gibson).

just curious

epic weekend.

maybe the last great campout?

"I scaled the mountain for Jerry"

Awesome hike off the mountain in the moonlight. The Ganjola smoke out to the top was epic...

I have that tape handy every year.

I imagine a PRS was used because the image was handy.

PRS started in 1985 and already had many big name stars playing their guitars by 1991.

Like who? (Other than Carlos Santana)

Sure, prs *started* in 1985, this company didn't really get off the ground until the mid 90's. Which is why I'm calling it an underground instrument (at the time)

Agree image just happened to be handy is probably the most likely explanation. In hindsight it just seems out of place.

Must have been an incredible time

Santana

Al Di Meola

David Grissom

Warren

Dickey

Alex Lifeson

John McLaughlin

and others

Thanks

david grissom. Haven't heard that name in a while

He's played with numerous artists- including John Mellencamp. We saw  him in a band called Storyville  in 1996- opening for ABB in Reno. The band was from Austin- Tommy Shannon on bass- Chris Layton on drums and I think Reese Wynans and a lead singer. They were great.  Sadly - a short lived band.

I omitted that guy who tours with Bob Weir now-- not a fan.

I saw him play with a pickup band at threadgill's once (No double trouble members present though) and he was excellent. Probably 10-15 years ago.

If memory serves, Dickey might have been playing a PRS at woodstock '94. I think gibson turned him down for a signature les paul model.

Last time I saw Bill Alive. Oh the Full Moon !!heart Big Fun Weekend !!

It was a tremendous amount of fun. Almost 10,000 feet. In observation of the thin air, Garcia did the healthy thing and switched to Merit Ultra Lights......

I was on the rail for both days; it was super windy, so being up front meant the sound wasn't blown out for us, as it was for people in the back.

So windy that at one point one of Garcia's amps actually blew over.

Great scene by Bill, of course.

I finished the last 3 segments of Long Strange Trip last night and seeing so many photos of Jerry was very moving. Your photos are fitting right in, LCL. Thanks.

glad your a big fan the of dead co

Wow amazing photos

I wasn't there, but IMO the early '90s were the best of times for the JGB.

>>>I'm really interested in knowing how/why a PRS guitar ended up in this concert advertisement.... it just seems out of place<<<

Only a dead head would notice & think of this.

Really, only a dead head.

(That's a compliment to dead heads)

And while looking at that add, I'm reminded that it's interesting that Squaw Valley has to this point squeaked under the modern rage against names like that. It's only a matter of time until it will happen.

(Personally, I have no issue with the name)

Thanks Judit and everyone who like the photos. It was a fantastic couple of days.

---I DIDN'T climb the mountain for Jerry; we were on the first or second gondola up each day. (And even though it was Aug., it was very cold early in the AM).

---The highest JGB show ever.

----The only public Garcia/Grisman show outside of the Warfield. (Private show at Sweetwater in Dec. '90).

----I was pretty fried due to the altitude, so I don't have much recollection of most of the other bands.

Lance, the name is going to be changed next year.

His last hurrah......(photo by a friend).

>>>Lance, the name is going to be changed next year<<<

Of course it is.

>>>The only public Garcia/Grisman show outside of the Warfield<<<

I did not know that.

I'm surprised they didn't do at least a couple of little tours, since that group really worked and in those days Jerry pretty much didn't do anything else BUT tour.

Unfortunately, the two shows I saw at the Warfield were almost completely ruined by the endless yammering & yowling of the crowd.

Thinking of my friends in South Lake now with a fire approaching.

Not your typical JGB backdrop........

Cheers everyone.

Can't believe it's been 30 years.

Too much fun.

>>> endless yammering & yowling <<<

or

>>> endless yammering <<<

possible band names?

Yammer & Yowl isn't a bad band name.

Booker T and Jimmy Cliff were great and of course the nevilles

8/25/91 Garcia Grisman w/ special guest The Wind

I remember one day we took a mini gondola up -- maybe fit 4 /6? people.  Of course the first thing everyone did in there was light up.

And one night took a big gondola back down, packed with people -- and it stopped and just hung there in the middle of the descent for an extra 5-10 minutes, which seemed like an eternity at the time. No one had a clue what was going on or what to do. Pre cell phone, of course so all you could do was stare at your feet or the other squashed freaks.

I also remember walking down and passing Bill on his scooter.

30 years? wow.

Its called a Funitel, Alan.

I have photos of us roller blading in the  ice/roller rink at High Camp (where tram disembarks) dressed in our concert tie-dye and Guatamalan attire...

Phun times

>>>I have photos of us roller blading in the  ice/roller rink at High Camp<<<

Post 'em or it didn't happen.

>>>it stopped and just hung there in the middle of the descent for an extra 5-10 minutes<<<

Good lord. Just reading that makes me feel panicky.

Oh that was a very fun weekend!

It really was a great location for a show, besides the wind factor.

Random Thoughts:

Alan, that's classic, I had the same experience....taking the small gondola up, and going down on the massive one.

Of course all I could think of were headlines I've read in the past:

SWISS ALPS TRAM CABLE SNAPS, 29 DEAD IN WRECKAGE

Thankfully that wasn't the case.

Funny the poster was mentioned. I've collected posters since my teens, but when my friend bought this right away, I thought,

Why is Santana's guitar on this poster???? Hahaha, never got one but would now for a good price. That design never made sense to me, so I'm ok with

having it or not.

I also remember on the tape at the beginning of the Garcia/Grisman set, they are tuning for a few minutes and finally Garcia, sounding somewhat irritated says:

"Let's just play", and they go right into Jack A Roe....awesome stuff.
