I have no recollection of the year I took those Oakland Auditorium shots, but I'm fairly certain they are from the first Chinese New Year shows the GD played.
I used to be able to recall details of everything concert/GD related, but these days it all rolls into one.
Mardi Gras was perfectly suited for the Grateful Dead concert vibe and those shows were always fun, but I loved the somewhat darker, trippier energy of the Chinese New Year shows.
I generally enjoyed both of those show runs more than the NYE runs, less expectations and more local-centric, but of course I always enjoyed the NYE shows as well.
I especially enjoyed the year they had the San Francisco Chinese Orchestra open the show. Those dudes on the traditional instruments really set the table for an inspired Grateful Dead performance.
The last time I saw the Grateful Dead was the Mardi Gras show in 1995.
