Saw his obit in the NY Times. I tip of the hat to a great American. I was lucky enough to catch the Flatlanders once and also wore out a recording from his tour with Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark and John Hiatt.
The obit includes a story of him escorting The Clash around during their first tour in Texas where they visited Buddy Holly's grave and got stoned on laughing gas & beer. RIP Joe.

I was at the Dallas show
I was at the Dallas show where he opened for the Clash in 1979. He came out with them for the encore of his song "Fingernails" and "White Riot". What a hoot that was! I wish I could thank the guy on my dorm floor whose idea it was to go. I don't even think it was sold out.....
