I posted the article for you to read how Eric Clapton felt about John Mayer, not my feelings on the sublect. Just for your information; if you are able to read back what I wrote merry prankster.
I am a huge Eric Clapton fan maybe the difference with me, is that I actually worked for Eric & Tom Dowd on the recording & mix down of "August" in 1986.
When Eric makes a compliment, it's well thought out & he means it.
You saw them in 68, me in 78, but I knew him one-one for 2.5 weeks, take after take after take, re-wind after replay etc..
Clapton and Cream are some of my all time favorites. Clapton is respected around the world for being a great player. Even some of you would agree. If he says Mayer can play, that is high praise.
Personally, I tend to agree. I think Mayer can really play. I bet some of you critics can't even play cowbell. so yeah, puff away Mayer.
I've seen Mayer many times over many years, and the only time I've ever thought he was close to "great" and not just a technically sound professional player has been the times I've seen him with Dead & Co.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think being a technically sound professional player is a bad thing and there are many of them around these days, just about every country band has one, but over the years I always found Mayer to be just another very straight forward, play by numbers, stay within the lines player, so I've been surprised and slightly amazed at how well I think Mayer has done with D&C.
I'm impressed that he took it so seriously, clearly did his homework and put in the time to not only learn how to be a Fake Jerry but also how to jam and stretch out. Good for him.
But still, when I saw him this summer doing his own show I was once again underwhelmed, on his soft pop songs, his power trio band or even on the very bland version of They Love Each Other, which fell totally flat that night. Maybe because the 18,000+ super excited John Mayer fans there were all sitting bored two minutes into it, clearly just waiting for "that dead song" to be over.
As for what he does to catch a buzz, I would think that weed has got to be better than booze, especially on the road.
