John McLaughlin & Jimmy Herring: A Meeting of the Spirits

Forums:

Anybody else going? We will be at the Capitol theater show. Really looking forward to it as well!

I bought my ticket so long ago, I can't even remember when it is.  Like mid-December????

I almost forgot about it as well. There was that troll thread from the other PZ that brought up Jimmy and jogged my memory about it. I didn't have tix, too far out to plan for a family of 4, but we are all going with tix and airfare purchased yesterday! Kids will be asleep with hearing protection on about half way through, but that is ok with me smiley

I'm going to the Warfield show on Dec. 8

there was an active thread about this tour way back in early February when tix first went on sale

https://www.vivalazone.org/other-stuff/john-mclaughlin-jimmy-herring-mee...

Thanks for the link, looks like a lot of zoners will be there. Feb was a rough month for me, not a whole lot of zoning going on at that point. Little bettah' now!

Sold out quick here.  crying

Town Hall here.

I’ll be at the Cap. 3rd row Center.

Town Hall !

I expect to be at the Warfield show.

I'm a bit concerned it will be a little stiff and yesterdays-newsy, but you never know.

I have a ticket for one of the Eastern shows.  It's coming along soon.  One of my largest concerns is -- which color of suede Pumas to wear ??

Pink is maybe too Gay;  Black might be too Roadie,  Beige might not match my shirt.

So  there's  sooo many wardrobe decisions...  I'm almost getting anxious.  Ö broken heartÖheart

Beantown!  Thinking this could be some of the hottest music in a while!

i have two extras, if anyone is interested.

ill be at the Cap shoe for sure, and The Brotherhood the night before at the Cap as well!!

Friday after Thanksgiving in Jacksonville. Been holding those tickets for some time now.

Have a bunch of tix I have been holding for long periods of time.

I have tix for Bruce Cockburn for April 2018, had them for 3 months already.

Anyone have an extra for the keswick?

I’m in for Clearwater, unless it gets canceled because of lack of ticket sales

You can't force culture on Florida Man.  Maan.smiley

John McLaughlin & Jimmy Herring Announce Free Webcast Featuring 4th Show Of Tour

https://www.jambase.com/article/john-mclaughlin-jimmy-herring-announce-f...

Nice,  thanks for the heads up on the FREE webcast - 11/4 8pm EST.

I'm on the hunt for a Warfield Floor ticket (or two).

Please gimme a shout out if you are aware of any.

----------------
Was at "Remembering Shakti" at the Paramount on 11/19/90 where JM played with U Srinivas - even have the recordings on my hard drive.

Caught McGLaughlin, DeLucia and DiMeola back in '84 along with supporting opener, Steve Morse (who also played w the Trio) and it was mind bending.

And of course, many experiences with Jimmy including ARU at Slim's sometime around '91 and many Q shows.

Arrggghh!!!! A FREE(!) webcast, and I'm WORKING that evening!

Who's got my heady screen capture????

((((Srinivas))))

Sweet!

Three tix available for New Orleans.  Two together, one single.

Just secured Orchestra (pit) row c on the right side....

See you there!

Went to the Albany show last night at The Egg.

I will definitely watch the free webcast from The Cap tomorrow!

That is a hell of a poster! Wow!

Thanks for posting it.

Hoping to get to Keswick early enough for pre-show Snacks. "Athena" nearby has Greek food, it's BYOB too. Then there's Keswick Tavern, sandwiches, wings, ribs, Bar food.

I could go for Kebabs,  Greek Salad & red Wine.  A nice filling meal will settle me in to my theatre seat for a long show.

Were in for Keswick, see you guys there !

Really excited as Jason is back playing violin again...:)

cant wait....i havent looked THIS forward to a show in a looooooonnnggg time...

You're going to LOVE this Lyn !!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cikoBZ3PL9o

Still have two extras for New Orleans, single gone.

Monday night, come to the Big Easy and make a weekend of it!

Thanks RRG...:)  I am excited, Bob is  hitting the Cap, then coming here for the Keswick show. We get to celebrate 6yrs of marriage and  9yrs together ((( Time flies ))).

I will be on free stream, see ya's there.

Jerry would be McLaughlin's age now.  I wish he'd taken better care of himself.

From the review to that video.....

"To top it off another fantastic guitar player, Jimmy Shearing and his band, joined him."

Love that Jimmy Shearing!

shear the music!

IMG_2750.jpg

JM has a new double neck for the Mahavishnu stuff.

Town Hall is SOLD OUT.

Giggidy!

Keswick appears to be sold out.  Probably they'll toss a few out between  now & then.  Got mine back in Feb,  likely my longest-ever advance ticket purchase.

Looking forward to trying the Audio stream.

So besides 'Athena'  (Greek place)  the area has ::

- Pizza
- Tavern Food
- Good Subs
- "Humpty's  Dumplings"

All within a short walk of venue.

Who(m)ever wants to meet & eat before Keswick,  let's.

If anyone can pick up one of those posters for me I would be very grateful!  (Of course I would pay you back plus shipping and buy you a beverage or two of your choice should we ever meet...)

Sweet poster thanks RRG, I'll be picking one up at the Cap tomorrow,

And be in row G center..

China Rider I'd be happy to grab you one too.

I'll be at the Keswick as well with another long time zoner

extra men's rooms will be needed...

Anyone interested, AXS has a pair for 105 @ including transaction fees (210 total). They were right up front, right section, row BB. Go to their site and check "Premium Tickets" instead of Regular.

(That's for the Keswick show.)

Might be an option for a nice pair.

Also went to The Egg in Albany last night.

Excellent show.

Format:

Herring with 5 piece band including Jason Crosby for about 45 minutes

McLaughlin with 4 piece band for about 50 minutes

Whole ensemble for over an hour

Watch for Crosby in ensemble setting matching THE electric guitarist lick for lick

Glad I went, never seen McLaughlin before and this is apparently his "farewell tour". He's over 70, but looks great.

Hey Willytee - awesome!

Have a great time at the show tomorrow, I’ll be streaming the free webcast.

Didn't see this posted yet so here it is. Free live youtube webcast from the Capitol Theatre tomorrow night. Should be great:

https://www.jambase.com/article/john-mclaughlin-jimmy-herring-announce-f...

Just checked 'Stubhub'  for Keswick tixx. They have the same Row BB for $82 each.  Others scattered throughout venue,  says 20 tixx left.  If I were looking for 1 or 2 I'd grab those BB,  but I've already got one further back.

Grab 'em while you can.

Glad to do it China Rider...

We will hook up through the grape vine....

Oh and I have a pair for row J floor cheap. See ticket board.

See ticket board for excellent tix.

THANKS for posting the link to the free webcast for tomorrow night's Cap show!

just watched the short video from the 11/1 Buffalo show that RRG posted a link to above... was surprised how GOOD Jason Crosby sounded on violin!! ... also kinda surprised that there were 2 bass players, and 2 keyboardists... not surprised there were 2 drummers and, of course, 2 guitarists, lol

glad I'll be seeing them in early December, near the END of their tour... the Mahavishnu-Herring collaboration should be well rehearsed and really ready to let loose by then!

Pretty, pretty good.

All nine players on stage for the third set.

Finally got to see McLaughlin play nasty.

BONUS!  Jimmy's drummer is Jeff Sipe.

"Let Jimmy sing" still gets a laugh.

Hitting The Cap tonight... Town Hall comments from last night trickling in on FB; sounded amazing, can’t wait..

I have one ticket that I can no longer use for John McLaughlin and Jimmy Herring at NJPAC on Friday Nov.10. Its in the fourth row, the aisle seat. I paid over 90 dollars for the seat, but I'm only looking to get 50 bucks for it, and I'll send it for free. Contact me at [email protected] if you're interested.

Gloved bass player.

WTF?

Not fingerless gloves.  That, I've seen before.

I'm sure there's a story in print somerwhere.

BTW, I could barely understand a word JMcL said, outside of "a blessing" and a few band members' names.

It's been a progression to this show for me.

I first saw JMcL in an acoustic trio (the tour that spawned Friday Night In San Francisco).  Then playing acoustic in an otherwise electric band (Belo Horizonte era), with the LeBeqcue sisters opening on back-to-back grand pianos. Then, playing electric, but on the smooth and icy side, tone-wise, with the Five Peace Band.  Chick did all the talking, if I recall.

Finally, last night, I got to see him peel some paint.

Hoping I can dial the stream in through Roku, and thus the big speakers, tonight.

I wish that I could purchase Eli's extra ticket,  for a great price,  but I'm holding one for the night before.

Good luck finding a nice Home for your Extra.

It would be very nice to attend 2 nights consecutively and compare,  but my Dawg would be upset.

I got a extra for tonite for the CAP .... reserved  2nd row orchestra center left  Holla!

So thankful it's streaming, going to cook up a roast with veggies and pretend I read Veda Vyasa

Bump.

Turn it up!

Liked the Les brers in A minor (Allman Brothers), and who can't resist the Jungle Book theme!

Jimmy Herring, (Guitar ) Jeff Sipe- (drums), Matt Slocum (B3 and Clavinet), Jason Crosby (Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, violin) and Kevin Scott (bass).

jason crosby must have taken so mch acid backstage at txr that he now transcends space and time and is a guest musician at every jamband show in every conceivable reality across all of time

Really into this. Thanks for the link.

I just enjoyed this entire show at Town Hall NYC last night, and now I get to enjoy it again while at work!!! smiley

woah crosby's a full timer and we get double keys??? very nice

Pretty Kool Music.

Thanks for Bands & Jambase for letting everyone listen / watch for Free.

Hope my imaginary internet holds up for the other sets.

How the heck does Druba know all the setlist;  oh that's right,  he is a professional Musician.

Here we thought he just mined Spotted Skunks all this time.

Argh! Got home just in time for setbreak

Sideshow Pranqued me to click on the Anarchist Simpsons link.

Hello,  Mr. Sideshow.

Actually only knew about 2/3rds of the set, had to cheat on 2 of them...   but I've covered 2 of those songs (Les bres and Jungle book),  the Miles has been posted here by many before, and that last song is off of Jimmy Herring's Lifeboat (great freaking album)

I'm really enjoying it so far,  but midway through JMcL set is about when I want to snack upon my leftover Kebab,  Hummus & Pita.

I know that's not allowed in there,  so it will be a challenge to smuggle that in,  and hide my snack near the smoking area.

Not opposed to purchasing the Venue snacks,  but leftover Kebabs or Souvlaki will be better than stale Fritos.

That was Huge Fun !!

Now I'm prepared for the live Version next week in the Northern Suburbs of Philadelphia.  Somewhere near Kensington.

The Greek Food option seems like the best.  Kebabs,  Souvlaki,  Rice & Greek Salad to fill up and sit through about 3 Hours of intense Music.

Of course I'll meet any Zoners for Subs,  or Dumplings,  or  Chinese before or after the Show.

My thoughts are about 4 PM -> 5 PM arrival time to beat Traffic,  and then sit down to eat.

Who(m)ever wants to have a Nice Snack before or after the Show,  let's do it.

just got home, great show...musically, one of best ive seen in ages...awesome...pretty cool to go w a cpl musicians also, one young, one old, and hear their thoughts and conversations all night...

100

Great show last night, there was a lot of talent up on that stage. Wasn't sure how well the 2 bands combined were going to sound, sometimes too many musicians playing at once can be a train wreck. These guys all had too much respect for each other for that to happen.

I’m a richer man today for having attended last night’s show. ‘Nuff said.

Face melting show last night..

Music / performance was fantastic.  The absolute best thing was that the audience was there to LISTEN to the music rather than chat it up.  A real refreshing change. smiley yes

Couldn’t agree more Keith!  Great hanging out before the show.

Regarding the unique PRS Herring was playing,  seems like he's had it over a year.

Apparently John Mayer has a similar one...

That is awesome Keith, looking forward to Philly and hope to see you  :)  I think I missed you at a few Ardmore shows of late ( ran into Les :) ) .  At Stanley Jordan Ardmore it was like that, so quiet you could hear a pin drop at times !

(((((Phishie))))))

!!!!!

What amazed me was the quality of Audio & Video over my not-so-sturdy internet pipeline.  I use PDANet on a cheapo Android for internet VIA wireless connection. (It is much faster than Dial-Up wink}  Usually the best I can do is Mixlr streams that often cut out or Buffer.

This one really did great without skips or crashes.  Made for a satisfactory Couch - tour experience.

Also this thangim_1.jpg

has an AUX - in jack and does a bangin'  job amplifying the audio signal.  Maybe the best €19.99 I've spent in Years.

the above mentioned lack of ppl chatting, and lack of assholes holding up phones was refreshing for sure...

Anyone streaming tonight from Cranston.? Last night was so good. TRob? Z?

See you in Bostion.

I'll be bzzzing about the Kwick. Great venue for sitting and listening.  Can't wait.

I'll see you, but will you see me? Wheres Weirdo? I'll be with a basketball team.

The GD channel on Sirius was really talking up the tour this morning. cool Stoked for blue arcs of electricity

I really enjoyed the shoe, but it was interesting. For the first time John seemed mortal to me. I have been seeing him play for over 26 years, and he has always been immortal in my book. Too good to be true. There were cracks in the veneer for the first time, and I could understand why its time to retire in his mind. If its not perfect, which it has been for so long, its not worth doing. I would argue the opposite to him if I had the chance, look at Monet's later years, vision clouded by cataracts, but his art was still beautiful. I got to meet him about 13 years ago and have a short conversation about touring with Tony Williams in Europe. Got his and the rest of Shakti's autographs that night. They were really nice and it was really interesting to be a fly on the wall that night.

I had to leave about 30 min before the end of the show, the rest of the family was back at a hotel in Manhattan, we had all planned on going but my 7 year old puked about 6:00 PM and the wife stayed behind with him and the 4 year old. I needed to make the 11:17 train so that is what I did and got back at a responsible hour and was functional the next day. If I had stayed it would have been the 12:17 train and in bed at 2. Really glad for the webcast to watch the last of it on the train. For the family's first time to NYC, the Statue of Liberty and no wait early AM trip up the top of the empire state building were actually the highlights of the trip for me :)

Hi Jill! :)~

My setbreak post on Facebook (far easier to post there than here from smartiephone):

"Lots of jazz nerds. I'm getting sideways stares for bopping my head around. Guys next to me don't know who Jimmy Herring is. I got blank stares when I mentioned Aquarium Rescue Unit, Widespread Panic, Col Bruce Hampton, Warren Haynes, Phil Lesh. When I added "bass player for the grateful dead" they wrinkled their noses, said "Oh I see" & turned away.  No line @ the bar - odd for a sold out show @ the cap."

Oh and lots of folks left early.  I was able to move down to 2nd row Loge center for most of the 3rd set, there were that many empty seats by then.

((((((((Jazz Nerds)))))))

Seen McLaughlin many times before, always got an "all Technique & little Soul" vibe from his shows.  This had much more "Soul" (whatever that may be).  I always preferred Larry Coryell &/or Al Dimeola as having more, um, "soul' but maybe not as fast/technique-ey.

I heard a story that back when McLaughlin opened for Frank Zappa, circa '74 or '75, he was doing the full on Mahavishnu thing, dressed in flowing white robes, stage festooned with candles & incense.  When Frank started his set, he had one little white scarf on, one candle, and one stick of incense on the stage, and proceeded to "do" the Mahavishnu thing for the 1st 20-30 min's of his set, then dropped into whatever 1st song was on the setlist (Stinkfoot/etc).  McLaughlin was isolating himself during the tour, only coming out of his room/talking to people for the show, & no one had the nerve to tell him that Zappa was basically making fun of him the whole tour.  He didn't find out until after the tour.  Could be just urban legend but I have heard Zappa bootlegs from this time period & noticed the opening "doing McLaughlin" thing . . .

HA. "Al Dimeola" and "soul" in the same sentence.

Good one, SS.

I'm basing that on live shows I saw years ago, maybe the Rugs were just better that nite ;)  Not much Soul in the fusion world overall - besides Miles . . . who basically Invented the Genre . . .

Al is a wierdo. Dropped him on FB due to racist posts. John has always smiled while melting my face, even with the acoustic. I would take him over Al any day.

Italians & Irishmen make the best Racists.  Must be all that Legacy of being considered Black by the WASP-ey set . . .

The takeaway from seeing JMcL and DiMeola together is that it's way more interesting to hear the former play chords than to hear the latter play . . . anything.

OK well I ain't a musician so I don't know jack shit, I do remember seeing Dimeola in the early '80's & again late '80's & I thought it was psychedelic, maybe not soulful, I do remember his studio albums were pretty slick (Elegant Gypsy was his best seller I think, have it & a few others on vinyl).  I'll have to go find some bootlegs & relisten . . .

Al definitely can bring it. I have seen him 3 times, the first time was called the three sides of Al-- solo, with the world symphonia, then with the al dimiola project. Sick show in Montreal that went way longer than I was expecting. When I saw the guitar trio on tour in '96 he seemed to be in not a great place and played a couple pieces solo that I really expected to be duets or pieces for all three musicians to play together. I would go see him again, its not like I have burned his records or anything like that...

Al was great with Return to Forever and on his early solo albums (with guys like Jaco, Chick Corea, Steve Gadd).  He was great but not even close to Mahavishnu

For pre show, the Keswick Tavern always works for me..........

nothing on the gloves.....but damn, he rocked my bones tonight !!

Need to know more !!

So a new Venue for me, and I really liked it.  Nice small place,  good sound,  no balcony.  About 38 miles each way with long stretches of PA.  turnpike and / or Tpk.  extension.  Five-seven bucks in tolls,  some construction Eastbound,  but traffic flowed easily enough.

Couple miles from the Keswick,  I spot a Phõ place in a dimly-lit strip mall,  so naturally,  I pulled in and parked.  Looked nice so I sat down and ordered.

http://www.phoandbeyond.net/Site/Home.html

Check out their menu.  Go there and eat !!  I had a bowl of Phð,  Spring Rolls and a [Banh Mi (Vietnamese Sub) to go].

Everything was delicious.  Service was lightninq - rapid.  Nice fresh Thai Basil, Hot Pepper slices and Mung sprouts to accompany the Soup.  Willow Grove, PA.  This might be the best Vietnamese place I've tried anywhere near Jerseyland.  With all of that delicious Food, my tab was a measly 20 bucks.

Thanks G-2 guys.

Cool food report, Stu.

Good fun.  So glad I went. Thanks Diatribe! Nice to see you Lyn & Bob. Sorry I missed Stu and Voodoo and others.  I never saw a band kneel down and thank the audience! Not once but 3 times. They snuck in an extra little encore too which was cool. McLaughlin was looking at the audience much of the night. I think he was soaking it up because he says this is it for him tour-wise.  I think the bass player wears gloves just for style. Though some players are sensitive about oils on the hands. Whatever the case he is a wonder. I just like saying his name  "Etienne M'Bappé".  I have to say that Jimmy's band was great too. I loved to hear him in his "own" setting. Crosby shined as well which was a bit of a surprise but the Rhodes and violin were ON all night. And let me not forget one of my faves, Mr. Jeff Sipe. That cat has got it covered. Overall a good night of great musicians at a real nice theater. Guess I should of put this in reviews!cheeky

Next up was Keswick Tavern.  Nothing too exciting there.  Busy,  crowded pub with some good Beer taps and average bar-food.  The nice lady from Wilkes-Barre sitting next to me at the bar must have thought I looked hungry;  she offered me 1/2 of her "BBQ"  sandwich.  I explained that I was stuffed with Vietnamese food,  but my Dog would enjoy it.

Unfortunately,  it had Omions,  so that 1/2 sandwich went to waste.  She was saying that Wilkes-Barre is lacking any Vietnamese restaurants,  and wished that there were some closer to home.  Anyway there are 2 rooms in that bar;  one smaller with a few tables and the large barroom with tables off to the side.  Lots of TV sets on the walls,  like every generic bar all over.  Some good Draft choices plus the usual bud Lite etc.  I had a Yuengling Octoberfest.  America's oldest Brewery.

Another lady got served the wrong type of Pizza;  the toppings were incorrect compared to what she ordered.  Again,  I must have looked hungry:  she offered me a piece.  It was just a little square bar pie,  not much to write home about. Maybe 8" x 8" square.  There is an actual Pizzeria just down the block.  I might try it next time I visit the Keswick.  I'd rather sit down with a really good Pizza and a bottle of Chianti instead of an overcrowded,  loud bar.

So if you like to go to shows and meet Ladies,  avoid this tour.  But if you want to meet Fellows,  it's the show for you. There was always a long line for the Men's room,  none at all for the Ladies'.  Even if all 14 women had to pee at the same time, it would have been OK.  But yeah,  there are only one of each and they are upstairs.  There are a few comfy upholstered chairs in that hall,  which is nice.

If you watched the free YouTube webcast,  the show was basically identical in format:  Herring set,  break,  McLaughlin set,  then the 9-piece Mahavishnu with everyone.  Two drummers, two bassists, two keyboardists, Herring & McLaughlin,  Crosby on fiddle.  Quite a sight to behold. Just amazing to watch and listen to them all interact with each other.

My seat was about 20 rows back on the right Speaker side (Crosby side) but I stood along the wall maybe 8-10 rows back for much of the show.  A little closer sightline and I could watch the musicians without baldheads in the way.  Plus three of the fourteen Girls were dancing up in that corner,  which was fun.  The guy standing nearby told me that Paul Reed Smith was on tour,  and there he is,  behind the Hammond guy (Herring side of stage).  So if anyone noticed that guy dancing around sidestage, that is the PRS whose guitars they were playing.

Besides Zoners Lyn, SSB & VooDoo,  I ran into my High School classmate Tom,  which was fun.  He is buddies with Tom Marshall (Phish Lyricist) who was at the show.  So we said our pleasantries and I asked if he recalled meeting uuummm,  seventeen years ago. We attended the same grade school, but different years.

Since I had purchased a poster at the merch booth earlier,  after the last encore myself and other cardboard-tube holders lingered around to see if any impromptu autograph scene would happen.  No such animal, but after most everyone had left, I found myself next to the stage where John McL was chatting with a fan.  We shook hands and he grabbed a setlist from the floor for me.  Perhaps I'll post a photo of the setlist later.

Overall,

It was a unique and thrilling Musical experience,  in a nice small theatre with great acoustics and sightlines.  Put a bunch of top-flight Musicians together on  "Farewell America" tour and Great Stuff can happen !!  Tonight is the Newark,  NJ show,  convenient to NYC and anywhere trains run.

Upon reflection,  it was a "3M Night" for me...  I met Mahavishnu,  Marshall,  and McLaughlin.  All of that just happened  without any effort or planning except getting a ticket back in February.  3M is the parent company of Scotch Tape,  not only the sticky stuff but also Reel-to-Reel tape back in the day.  No doubt many classic McLaughlin LP's were recorded on that product back in the 70's.  There was no Digital then.

One concert-goer was carrying a copy of this one:
https://www.discogs.com/John-McLaughlin-Electric-Guitarist/release/2282264

Perhaps he thought it possible to get it autographed.  All sorts of players on that record;  each song has a different cast of characters.  Santana and Jack Bruce are on there + a 'Who's Who" of Jazz people.

John M.  was just totally laid-back and personable in our brief conversation.  I didn't really expect a Musical Legend to be so down-to-earth.  Happy that I got to see him shred on that double-neck PRS one time.

I like the new “security” changes at The keswick

Never visited Keswick Theatre before.  I notice they have metal detectors now.  So you put your keys,  cel-phone and Mag-lite in the basket and walk through.

I did not beep,  so it's Safe.

All of the Ushers & Security staff were very polite and Friendly.

It's a nice place smiley

Perfect description Stu :)

I feel refreshed and renewed and would like to say if you enjoy this type of music...GO and see them !  I love the presentation of how the sets, Jimmy Herring's band began my journey getting me moving and groovin, closing my eyes and having the colors of the music flowing in my mind. Then John Mclaughlin came on and I was kinda stopped in my tracks and made to sit and listen to the aesthetic notes that were wonderful in patterns, licks and phrases that had me smilin from deep inside my heart <3.

Then the anticipation of the 3rd set had me super excited to hear them mesh together , and believe me.....they delivered for a totally drop jaw set. I found myself  so taken hostage by this ensemble of amazing musicians that I really forgot where I was and ALL my stress and problems of the world were lifted from me, even if just for one nite...Beautiful ~

I would also like to add that I have been a fan of Jason's for a long time, I remember when he first came on on our scene and  fell hard for his violin playing, it  has been a while to hear
him play again and he was wonderful. The deep haunting tone of his violin and the way he serenaded the the bow to the body....was incredible !

Today I am feeling refreshed in mind and spirit, and very blessed to have been a part of this wonderful once in a lifetime experience !

I was quite happy to run across Lyn  & SSB for a moment,  during this Historical & Pleasant Musical Event.

Happy Anniversary once again.

What a Fun Time !!

Stu, always good to see you !  It was pretty amazing :)

Lyn,

Always a pleasure to see you all at the shows.  Funny story,  you were in my dream the other day.  You were driving (some passenger vehicle) on the freeway and I was in the passenger seat,  no idea where we were going.  In front was this boat-on-wheels / giant hot-tub vehicle but with a cargo area / station wagon in the back.  There was a girl in there motioning to back off,  as you were tailgating at freeway speeds.

I also said "slow down,  you're too close !!" but then all traffic slowed and pulled off to the right,  where there was some sort of Kiosk / Bus shelter.  People got out of their vehicles and discussed whether there was an accident ahead, or whatever.  The lady driving the boat-ish rig had a Harelip and resulting speech impediment,  but I could understand what she was saying.

I asked what sort of vehicle she had,  and she told me it was a modified boat,  and pointed to a tag attached which had the name and model # printed.

So,  did anyone go to the Newark show ??

Seeing this for the 2nd time really opened my eyes.  1st time @ the Cap I certainly appreciated Mclaughlin's technical wizard-ry, similar to other times I've seen him (Oct '07 @ the Egg in Albany, early '91 @ Toad's Place are 2 I can remember right now).  In the past he's always (to his credit) played whatever new music/album he put out, which always was technically brilliant but kinda felt "sterile".  So never got to hear him play the classic Mahavishnu Orch stuff live.  During the time between the Cap & Keswick shoes, I went back & listened to a lot of that stuff, hadn't heard it in decades, so for the Keswick shoe I was far more versed/prepped for how Magical and Soulful that 3rd set was!

Hey Stu, remember I tapped your shoulder as you walked up the aisle (I was waiting for the piece to end before climbing back to my seat in the middle of the row), you turned around yelling "HEYYYYY, SIIIIDESHOWWWWW, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, MAAAANNNNN!!!!!!!!!!", of course during the quietest part of the piece, you could literally hear a pin drop otherwise, EVERYONE turned and looked @ us, I gave you the SSSSSSSHHHHHHHH shamey finger, it was quite Funny.  (((((((JAZZ NERDS)))))))

Similar situation happened @ Peach Fest during the Sco-Mule set when Mike W & Row J visited us, & of course Mike W was wayyyyy too Fabulous to heed anyone shaming him for disrupting their mellow, he was wasted on wine or brandy so he kept right on babbling incoherently, so I said loudly "SO I HEAR YOU LIKE AVANT GARDE JAZZ?"

SSB,

Perhaps you were smoking Banana Peels,  because the way I remember it,  I yelled  ELIHOO AKBAR JABROONKA !!! thrice before spraying myself down with a can of hairspray,  and self-immolating like the Tibetan Monk on the cover of LIFE magazine.

Anyway,

I custied up and purchased the Poster for the Philly / Newark part of the Tour.

Let me find a Camera that still works,  and I shall attempt to post a Foto.

Memories ha ha - I remember a few years back post Phil @ the Cap you had stayed w/us then were getting a ride home w/another zoner - so we connected with the zoner, parked our cars adjacent on the street behind the cap, transferred all your gear from our car to theirs, all precision military style, so we're all done, ready to go (I worked back then so wanted to get a move on so I could get some sleep before getting up for work, as, presumably did the other zoners), the other zoner asked "So Where's Stu?" - Lyn & I look @ each other, then the other zoner;  we all rolled our eyes in unison as we saw you Skipping away down the sidewalk, Blissfully chasing pretty girls, like the happy little Elf on a Shelf that you are, oblivious to any Need to get going/move on with our lives . . . classic Stu . . .

Sorry Chief --

You have me confused with some other Zoner.

The scenario which you described sounds Fun,  but I was not involved.

I've always had a Fun Time when we enjoyed Cap PC shows together,  but never transferred luggage between your vehicle and some other one.
Although your Legend Creation is entertaining,  it never actually happened.

Perhaps you got that mixed up with the time I rode the Train from CT or Port Chester station back to Penn NYC,  the same evening DeadCo had an MSG show after Phil & Friends at Port Chester Cap. I do believe you all gave me a lift to the train station,  but the multi-vehicle confluence never existed.

There were two separate PC Cap runs where we all lodged together.  One was at the Hilton in nearby CT town,  the other at random Motel in nearby CT town.  Latter one,  Mrs. Lyn drove back to Jerseyland,  but the other one I took the train back from whichever Station to Penn NYC.

"fake news" lol

This is kind of wild. Very very brief clip of John McLaughlin playing with the Tony Williams Lifetime on Beat Club ca. 1970:
https://youtu.be/tYwYsK-delk?t=30m40s

epic sideshow/fid/stu stuff there.

should i go to the ucla shoe?

Yes Turts, considering these are John McLaughlins final U.S. dates ...

This really is a must see show.

I found the experience to be Sonically amusing,  with many stretches of Awesomeness,  and a few minor Clinkers here and there.

No doubt that I will never get the opportunity to experience that particular lineup again.  I mean that this is IT !!

Helps if you are partial toward Jazz Fusion ensembles,  and these musicians do that particular genre very well.

Actually,  each Musician plays so well that you can say to yourself,  "No matter how much I practice the ( Bass,  Drums,  Guitar,  Keyboard ) I will probably never play that Good..."

So having checked it out,  my advice would be "Go check it out !!! "

They are only getting tighter with each performance.

Show was a hot hot mess (in a very good way)

Sad that theater was less than half full in Jacksonville

So glad I went even with a 4 hour drive

My two extras for New Orleans gone.

Single spare, it bees gone.

tfts.

I'm so looking forward to this show! Never bought tickets so far in advance before! lol.

Might have an extra Warfield, depends on if my +1 can make it or not. I will know in 24 hours or less.

The first two sets are great as you would expect.

The Mahavishnu Set?  So powerful, so beautiful.

Never thought I would live long enough to hear McLaughlin play these tunes again.

Herring, crossroads of technique and tone.

Crosby does a really good job with the violin parts.

M and H both record for Abtract-Logix, run by Souvik Dutta.  Souvik is Jimmy's manager. So hopefully a nice package will be released.

McLaughlins Double neck now on eBay, starting bid $25,000, proceeds to Palestinian children's charity.

Hey Willows!  I think I remember that we have seats fairly close to each other.  If you end up selling an extra to somebody who is even creepier that I am, I can trade my ticket with them.

aiq: can you tell us how late the show went?  Or how many hours from beginning to end?

I'm trying to figure out if I'll be able to catch the whole show and get on BART before it closes.

Friday soon come!

haha I'll keep that in mind, Johnny D

I didn't realize that Jimmy Herring's sets are on the archive.

willows how much is the ticket? if you have it i might take it. but i am on the fence i have been trying to reign in my fervent concert going this year

^I think that mine was about $60.

GTTS if you can!

I got my tickets today for the Warfield.

I first saw Mahavishnu John 37 years ago at the Warfield when they recorded the Friday Night In San Francisco acoustic show with Al De Meola & Paco De Lucia.

A huge fan of the Mahavishnu Orchestra I was expecting it to be a ripping electric show. It took about five minutes to get over that and revel in the brilliance of that show.

I saw him again at the Warfield in 1984 when he was playing with his "new" Mahavishnu Orchestra (which was a fucking great band) and again was expecting a full-on electric barrage, but through most of the show he played the at-the-time new Synclavier guitar, which is more of a synthesizer than an electric guitar and my friend & I were more than a little bummed at that. But, there was a Les Paul on stage and we kept waiting for him to strap it on.

And finally when he did...

Oh my.

I've seen him many times since and it's always been excellent, but never fully electric and raging since that night 34 years ago. I'm hoping for a little more that, one more time this time. Because there's never been anything like John McLaughlin when he's fully plugged in and letting it rip.

And maybe the best part of this is that I'm going with the same friend I went with in 1984, and also the friend I went with in 1980. My two oldest friends and I still going to the show.

Far out.

What am I saying "maybe"???

DEFINITELY the best part of this is that I'm going to the same venue with the same friend I went with in 1980, and also the same friend I went to the same venue with in 1984. My two oldest friends and I still going to the show.

Far fucking out.

Heading out in a few hrs.

Anyone interested in a pre-show beverage?
You will find me imbibing a cocktail at the Showdown Bar.
It's sorta Catty-Corner from the Warfield at 10 6th Street around 7.
(It used be the Charleston Saloon, aka "the Charlie," where I'd usually get a pre-show beer before all those many Garcia Band gigs!)

Nice photo Ro!!

Yeah Phil should play with Jimmy and John as friends.

The Q Dimension!

The Meeting of the Spirits show I saw gets my vote for show of the year. It has infinite levels of awesomeness that is just mind blowing. McLaughlin and his band are world class musicians. Such an honor to see this.
