"When it comes to the ever-evolving world of jazz, few artists have managed to capture the essence of improvisation and musical diversity like John Scofield. With his latest offering, a collection of 14 songs titled Uncle John’s Band, set to be unleashed on Oct.13, 2023, Scofield takes listeners on a euphonious journey with the assistance of Vincente Archer on double bass and Bill Stewart on drums.

The dynamic ensemble delivers a mesmerizing performance across the double CD set to be released via the renowned ECM label. The album presents a mix of musical styles, ranging from bebop classics to jazz-rock originals and homages to legendary artists, including Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, the Grateful Dead and more."

Always been one of my favorite "Friends".

Will this be a Cover Band?   Inquiring minds want to know!

lol

Going to see him with Shakti in a few weeks.  Wonder if he is opening and if he'll drop some of these tunes.

ECM albums always sound so good.  Look forward to hearing this one.

My oldest brother lives next door to Scofield.  Had to a double take one morning when I looked out the window one morning to see John bringing in the newspaper.

that dude sucks.

Ha.

Sco crushed it with Hornsby and the Noisemakers at The Town Hall back in June (along with Christian McBride and Kenny Jarret).

Tore it up with a couple of tones from Mars I've never heard from anyone else.

Sounds like an awesome group of players!

I agree with Turtle. I've never been impressed with Schofield. He's... timid and soft. If that's his magic, his touch, then forgive me, but you can have it.

While I respect the right of each person to like or dislike andy music or musician based on their own tastes, when it come to John Scofield, I will always remember the night of 23/04/05 in Buffalo, NY. Sco gave a master class during Althea that had me completely enthralled. It just kept getting better and better. After the song was over and Phil gave Sco some props, I had never seen before or since the look on Phil's face and his grin. Both of us KNEW we experienced something special. The applause from the audience pretty much said they did as well.

I'm so glad he won't be playing at the Shakti show I'm going to. In fact, I probably wouldn't have bought the ticket if he was.

That being said, I've seen him a few times with his own groups and been entertained, and generally he's excellent in his own world, but there are still many, many other jazz guitarists I prefer.

I saw him play with Amendola vs Blades at TxR once and he was excellent in that trio setting. I've also seen him with Snarky Puppy and Lettuce,  and while he was OK I didn't think he added anything.

And with Phil? He always reminds me of the marching band in Animal House, marching blindly into a dead end alley and continuing to try to march & play while mashed up against a wall.

No clue.

I had just gotten the discs (remember Vines?) of that Buffalo show in the mail; first listen in the car while picking Da Boy.  On the way home, during Althea solo:

Me: Holy shit!

Da Boy: Grateful shred?

I didn't hear that phrase again until it was a band.
