Joni a surprise guest at Wayne Shorter tribute

Forums:

I'm generally not a big fan of these type of multiple all-star shows, too much coming & going to get into a flow, but the one that just happened at the Hollywood Bowl to honor Wayne Shorter had my interest even without Joni Mitchell on the official bill.

Even with her diminished skills, if I had been there this incredibly poignant version of The Circle Game, performed with a superstar group might well have been the highlight.

Joni was 23 when she wrote The Circle Game. It's amazing that this song about the passing of time was written by such a young person, but sung now by someone on the other end of the game it's message is even more powerful.

Long live Joni Mitchell.....

Thanks for posting this, Lance!

Joni's return to live performance has been inspirational to witness.  Love how Herbie prefaces this take with "Let's have some fun!"  He's been a participant in the impromptu monthly jam sessions she has hosted at her house in L.A. as she has regained her chops.  They sound like great parties, a gathering of friends.

Her phrasing is excellent.  The sense of joy among the gathered musicians is palpable.  A beautiful tribute to her frequent collaborator, Wayne Shorter.

The wheel keeps turning.

speaking of the late great Wayne Shorter...

just released by Amazon Prime is a new 3-part documentary on the life and music of The Man himself. I haven't had a chance to watch any of it yet -- except the trailer -- but the advance buzz appears promising. Check out the following links for more info:

That's funny Gary, I just now finished watching all three episodes.

For me as a huge, long-time Wayne Shorter fan it was a bit underwhelming, as I felt it didn't really get into many details that would have been interesting to me. Plus, it rambled at times, was a bit fanciful in others and the back half of the third segment became repetitive and dull, but for those who aren't familiar with Shorter it's a good documentary, as it does a good job of showing the immense range of work he did over his long career and the huge impact he had.

Almost as soon as I became a fan of Shorter's in the early '80s I found similarities between him & Garcia, something that remained through all the years, and I think fans of Jerry's who watch the doc might notice some of the same things, and hear similarities in the way the various people interviewed speak of him, and with the reverence they speak of him.

I was happy with the emphasis on his late era quartet in the first half of third segment, which in my humble opinion was the greatest jazz group of all time, and while no one overtly says that, it's basically said repeatedly.

And I swear, I absolutely agreed with every word Don Was said in his various moments, like he said EXACTLY what I would have said if anybody had asked me. Good for him.

I sure do miss Wayne Shorter.

Mind if I post?

How y'all doin?

I just started watching the doc tonight. Some good stuff here.

^^^ good gunnar!
