Jorma Kaukonen 2023 Solo Acoustic Tour

Jorma started off this 8 show run last night at the Triple Door in Seattle, where he plays again tonight before heading off to Portland, Salt Lake City, and a few Colorado shows.

He's sounding as strong as ever.  Things started to lift off about three songs in when he played Hesitation Blues, Barbeque King, and True Religion in a sequence.  He played two sets.  I enjoyed seeing him close-up with an attentive crowd.  The Triple Door is a great room, with outstanding sound, and the food and beverage options from the Wild Ginger kitchen are a big plus (I had the Green Coconut Chicken Curry, the sautéed green beans, and a root beer).

Jorma's like Gandalf now with his all white hair and beard.  He didn't say much during the first set, but shared a little bit about his travel, amid other interactions in the second set.  Been So Long, Genesis, I'll Be Alright Someday, Good Shepherd, and many other mostly familiar tunes.  I'm going back tonight, and will see how much he changes the set.  He didn't play Embryonic Journey, so maybe we'll get that tonight.

Two generous sets of high caliber music from an American Master.  What more could you want?

I love this warm review, Dave. I finished reading it with a smile and a tear. Lovely.

Thanks for the great write up Dave.  Going to Portland show tomorrow and very happy to see him. A setlist anywhere close to yours would be fantastic.

>>>What more could you want?

West Coast electric Hot Tuna shows.

jorma is a stud.

Sure is, Turtle.

As the electric Hot Tuna shows on Long Island last weekend were billed as the last electric HT for the time-being, I'm wondering if Jack is dialing back his touring, and Jorma is using this mini-run to test the waters of touring solo.   The tour apparatus seems light and lean.  One acoustic guitar, no effects, his son as guitar tech, minimal merch.  Probably a tour manager in the background.

There aren't many living beings playing finger-picked Piedmont Blues at all anymore, perhaps none at Jorma's level.  He has been honing some of these songs for over 60 years now.  Watching him now reminds me of when I saw footage of Blues Revival artists like Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, and Robert Pete Williams.  Men who have lived with their music.

I really appreciate all of the streams from Fur Peace Ranch, but there is no equal to being live in-person.  I hope Jorma continues to have a taste for the road.  A set of California shows perhaps?  This set seems an ideal match for a Hardly Strictly Bluegrass appearance.

Last night was another solid performance with about half repeats of the first night.  No problem hearing alternate takes of Good Shepherd, Been So Long, and Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out, which reminded me a little of the way Dylan phrases songs.  He played Water Song, Let Us Get Together, Serpent Of Dreams, among other tunes not heard the first night, encoring (though not leaving the stage) with Embryonic Journey, which is always a nice way to end a show.  He didn't play I Know You Rider or Third Week In The  Chelsea at the Seattle shows, so there should be some more diversity in the set lists for the rest of this tour.

Go see the show if you can.

Friend just texted offering me a ticket for $25. Guess I'd better go, eh? Nice 300 seat theater.

amazing show

as someone who tries to play guitar it's mind bending what that man can do, and with no effects

custied up for a t-shirt from the merch table(which was run by a local fan not part of the tour)

just sayin

Dang. They were out of men's large in Portland. I didn't even see the back of the shirt.  That's a replica of Jorma's tattoo on his back, right? Great shirt.

Glad to hear Portland was another nugget of a show.  Wonder why you all only got one set after he did two sets each night in Seattle?

I'm not that into tattoos, so I got the other t-shirt they had with the picture of Jorma printed on the front and the lyrics to Genesis on the back.

The set lists for night 2 in Seattle and Portland are up on his blog.  Looking forward to hearing about the SLC and Colorado shows.  At least through Portland, he has not played Third Week In The Chelsea yet on this tour.
