its a little bit sad to say it since at the end of the day they are just a cover band, but there really arent many regular touring bands right now that are truly travel-worthy, and JRAD is one of the few that are worth it and will almost always deliver a great show jam-packed with super creative and engaging improv. i would love to see them slowly dial back the GD stuff and incorporate more and more music from their other respective projects, but idk if i really see that happening...if that was the plan they'd have gotten the ball rolling at this point.
with all the benevento/russo duo material, joe's songs with chris harford, scott's instrumental material from wolf!, tom's indie-ish stuff from american babies(thats mostly not great but theres gotta be a few winners in there), marco's solo material, and maybe even a few ween songs, there is a huge songbook of more or less original material that could form the basis for an original band, and the absolutely insane chemistry and skill these guys have could REALLY make it work in a way that doesnt happen for the vast majority of jambands. mostly i just want to see these 5 dudes improvise and tear it up.
Chill scene. Johnny Mercer Theater. Modern theater with 2,350 capacity in the Savannah Civic Center in the historic section. Our hotel is only two blocks away.
Theater about three quarters full and we have a whole row to ourselves in the very back. Crowd is chill and everyone dancing.
It's one of those theaters where they have old lady ushers vs. yellow shirts. So easy to hit the vape and smuggled in bourbon.
wonder if lawyers is a first time played? ive never seen it on their setlists before but dont follow super close. scott sang it im guessing?
Crowd is chill and everyone dancing.
crowd is good at every jrad show ive been to so far. people are there to rage it and listen to the music. definite party environment with some edge and some darkness, but very very minimal ameteur hour behavior or significant chatter. the goldilocks porridge of dead crowds.
ive heard joe mention KSM as one of the first songs that clued him into the fact that the dead might be a lot deeper than he originally thought. prior to furthur, he wasnt really a fan, and after getting the call for furthur, he asked a deadhead friend of his for some listening material and KSM was the first thing that really drew him in, and it seems like KSM is always a real strong showing when they play it.
We did that venue and I agree it's an interesting one. I prefer coming in at the mid level than down below as I find that the pit doesn't get back as much. I appreciate the nooks and crannies. I like it as far as other options that scale in ATL but it doesn't compare to some of the great music halls accross the country.

If they'd come to Oregon, they might well have canceled tonight due to the snow and ice as other bands are, in Eugene.

Just got back to the Airbnb, conveniently located one block from the venue.
Have a fun show Mike. So cool how so many people are grooving to live GD music on any given night in this country. Pretty magical.
