JRAD vs DNB

Forums:

Let's go over some pluses and minuses.

JRAD plays mostly GD

DNB plays some GD

thats a plus in the JRAD column for grateful shred heads

JRAD is a cover band

How many original songs does DNB do?

Quite a few. Many with lyrics by R. Hunter.

DNB

Not even close.

JRAD has some pretty good musicians. They have one bad singer but he sings Jerry tunes.

Tell me what happens after Eagle Breeder's Waltz....

When I saw JRAD is sounded like some pert good 80's dead covers

DNB 100%       but still going to JRAD soon.smiley

When you want GD covers, go to JRAD or Cubensis.

When you want the best music on the planet, go to DNB.

How many New Riders songs does DNB do?

Wow....its like comparing apples and planets

Knot --

Serious question.  Have you attended a DNB or NRPS show in the last 5 - 7 years ?

How could you even compare the two? DNB has the aged soul of our heroes with a legacy rooted in the past.

JRAD is just milking it for the $$.. Seriously I didn't like Mayer singing GD tunes till I heard the flat soulless sounds of Tom Hamilton

The band is tight but find another singer. WEEN bassist Dave Dreiwitz is the best part of the band IMO

I've never seen New Riders.

My wife and son saw the DNB for free on Haight Street.

Is JRAD better than New Riders, Stu?

Jambone, if they play your town on the same night, who are you seeing?

Esau,

I was just inquiring because there are a few tunes that DNB and NRPS have in their shared repertoire.  "Ghost Train Blues"  is one that comes to mind.

Each ensemble has their unique interpretation of that one.

Really,  I don't know for sure if you enjoy ~that~ style of Music or what.

There are many DNB,  JRAD & NRPS recordings on archive.org.

You ought to listen,  and form your own decisions based upon your personal Sonic experience.

We should tell everybody that so we don't have anymore discussions about stuff.

Great Idea !!

You are welcome to forward what I posted above,  and share with your Friends on other social media platforms.

If they send that along to their pals,  that's fine.  I'm not considering my post as copyright stuff.

No need to send me any $$ but you could suggest donations to VivaLaZone and/or archive.org.

It is always my great pleasure to share my insights with yourself and other individuals within the Greater Musical Discussion Community !!

Zactly...it is just personal taste..for me, Slack, id go see DNB anytime, anywhere. I think they are a great great BAND. i like jrad, they are a good cover band , covering music i absolutly love. The differance, to me, is massive.

Is Molo better than Russo?

DNB it is for me.

Methinks Slacker is creating Post-Controversy,  rather than engaging in some Constructive Listening.

Ears are a terrible thing to W.A.S.T.E.

Slack....you may want a new hobby.

What has Barry Sless composed?

High Five?

Coconut Wireless?

>> apples and planets

Ok. Utopia or Todd Rundgren?

DNB at GAMH was my favorite DNB. Acoustic first set. Two more electric sets.

Easy answer

JRAD AND DNB

Molo vs. Russo?

Russo was pretty great in Furthur, but I still preferred Molo. When I saw Russo with JRAD he seemed less good than before. Phoning it in, going through the motions....just one show, I know, but I always want to hear Molo.

Can DNB be more soulful than TTB?

What year did the current DNB lineup start, Stu?

I'm looking up recordings.

JRAD is a cover band

I think that statement is misleading in it's insinuation. The members of JRAD are all accomplished members of numerous other bands that play original music. This a a project side band for everyone, not their main gig. It is not as if JRAD is playing the regional club circuit looking for an audience.

As for the original question, I like JRAD better than I like DNB and it has nothing to do with the song selection. That doesn't take away anything from DNB. I think they are a quality band as well. Just like JRAD better.

>>> WEEN bassist Dave Dreiwitz is the best part of the band IMO

least favorite for me, but I admittedly haven't listened to a lot of them.

the recordings have a hard time keeping my attention and I'd probably rather see dso on a good night.

Slacker is endearing.

Ween over JRAD anyday..

When did Molo and Sears join DNB?

https://archive.org/details/dnb2016-06-11.flac16/dnb2016-06-11d204.flac

"You profit from my labor

While I feed my kids on hope...."

the current incarnation of DNB was in place by 2006 (Pete Sears joined in 2005, and Molo came on-board in 2006)

while I have a soft spot for the original DNB lineup -- I saw them perhaps 15 times from 2000 thru 2005 -- the vast majority of the DNB shows I have attended had the current power lineup that includes Sears & Molo (vs. original bassist Billy Laymon & a succession of drummers [Arthur Steinhorn, Charlie Crane, Jimmy Sanchez, et al.])

as alluded to previously in this thread, comparing DNB and JRAD is an unfair exercise... if you wanna hear a GD cover band on steroids, you go see JRAD... whereas if you aspire to connecting with the greatest and tightest improvisational jamband out there today, playing some of the best original songs of our time (with a few GD tunes and kickass versions of other covers thrown in for good measure), with an iconic frontman that is one of the few living musicians having a pedigree going back to Jerry's formative musical years in the early 1960s, and with a loyal and kind fan base that is small enough and tight enough to be considered family, then you choose the David Nelson Band.

to me, it's a no-brainer

If a "Musical Fest"  happened with Ween,  DNB,  and JRAD somewhere together,  I'd be inclined to go.

Not paying for Slacker's ticket,  but will buy him a Beer if that all comes to fruition.

>>>Ween over JRAD anyday

now this headspace post I agree with

Is that because Ween is silly? Like Zappa silly?

Slacker sure has caught allot of fish today.

SLACKER Can You Research Your Answers To Your Own Questions ON YOUR OWN ? _________BoZo  #AnnoyingFuck

Slacker sure has caught allot of fish today. <<<

He Does It All The Time  -- Classic BOZO Slacks = What A KOOK

What kind of car do you drive, plf? A Jetta ? Do you have any DNB in the cassette player?

My Plf has all original parts and come from previous cars.

>>>Is that because Ween is silly? Like Zappa silly?

good question, probably more cause they're original.

i guess sorta like Zappa/beefheart silly original, if u wanna make that comparison.

DNB not even close and I like JRAD a lot.

DNB without a doubt

Because it is unlikely that DNB will ever come east again, I will go with JRAD.

I'll go against the grain.

If we are talking history and each and in their prime, sure DNB over JRAD.   However, if we are talking today? I'd take JRAD.  The last DNB show I saw was painful and I feel for David as he fights for his life.

As a reminder, this was posted on another sea lion thread:

>>  Knot doesn't go to the shows.

hear ya zang....the very last one i was worried during the 1st few songs....then second set...he came out, telling jokes and was fine...

My kid has seen more DNB and JRAD shows than Gravy.

Haha, no.

And shouldn’t you be digging a ditch right now, anyway? Oh, wait, you are...

>>My kid has seen more DNB and JRAD shows

Cool story. Maybe ask him and your wife these dumb questions then...

Thanks for the posts, Gravy. You're one cool dude.

Is Marco better than Mookie?

You’re asking the wrong questions. It’s not is “x better than y” in elite music. Nobody really asks “is Miles better than Chet?” Ya know? Your ignorance about music is astounding. I’d think you were just sealioning if I didn’t see you do this over and over which, come to think of it, may just be sealioning, after all. In that case, you’re just trolling, eh?

>>>>Nobody really asks “is Miles better than Chet?” Ya know? Your ignorance about music is astounding.

How much time do you spend studying music?

Gravy, before you split for a month, how many times have you seen each band? Does any one performance stand out?

>>How much time do you spend studying music?

At least part-time every week the last 30-40 years. I’ve had formal instruction on three different instruments. And, even though we’re about the same age, I saw Jerry 50 times to your 0.

Anything furthur from you will just be treated as more sealioning.

I'm honored that you find the time to speak to me, Gravy.

You saw Jerry. Cool. He taught you well.

How much are music lessons?

Is slacker asking a question?  O. M. G.!!!!

How awful. Questions.

Thanks for your post, fly.

>You saw Jerry. Cool. He taught you well. <

lols....

lol.

You just keep inquiring young buck. like this: Do you think your questions are funny or are you trying sarcasm for the first time?

I think you're trolling me with your paranoia in a thread about music.

am i?  Is it?  trying going one day without asking a question you think makes you look smart. Is slacker asking questions because he really wants an answer?

Dude, I'm not trying to impress anyone. I've told you what I do for work.

If you want to answer a question, please do. If you don't, I'm not going to get upset.

now go ahead and play that game but its pretty transparent.  Sorry if you were serious in your question. Note I answered the OP in a serious fashion. Have a great day/night!

That was fly getting the last word in.

You're a sock named fly. It's pretty obvious you just want to bug people.

HA!  sock. I been fly since 2000.  But calling people sox is a common deflection round here.

truthfully Im sorry, im a dumbass and only here to pick fights with strangers.  Mea culpa, continue with your line of questioning

i'm takin' slack out for ice cream.

Sorry Fly but you already said good day.  Usually that means you’re leaving.

That Gravy meme is outstanding.

I said I was a dumbass and Im sorry for questioning the questioning.  And I still say DNB.   Seeing JRAD  in October.  derp

Disc golf time, Fly.

I was listening to a DNB show from 2008 today. David's voice was struggling.

Still good music.

JRad is unlistenable to me. Not one of them can perform a Jerry ballad. They can do shake down and anything fast

decently but the jams aren’t really much improv. DNB is just in a different league. Wish they would come back east.

...601546.jpg

November 2008 DNB run was all repeats.

sorry to bump an old thread. of course dnb is a better band.

but as far as pure improv and creativity goes, dnb does tap into something pretty deep, but at the end of the day all the jams sound pretty similar, and the most intense peaks pretty much all hinge on barry's playing. and dont get me wrong, its fucking incredible.

but jrad covers alot more musical ground than dnb does, puts out a much wider variety of different styles, and all the members contribute equally to the peak moments of improv.

i think jrad is much more creative and adventurous in their improvisations than dnb is.

i also think its entirely possible that if jrad had been together for 25 years, and one of the members was an expert songsmith who frequently collaborated with hunter and is one of our last and best connections to jerry garcia in a live music setting, they would probably be a better band.

but they are not any of those things, they are a cover band, so dnb wins

Songsmith!

legacy

and I don't mind saying it connection to a magical time (a national treasure)

five pretty fabulous musicians all that have been known to crush it

 And often all at once

catch it while (if) you can !  GTTS

Do you like T-Ham's vocals?

There in two different weight classes.

-a better fight would be JRAD Vs. DSO (with jk)

Cause dso with baracco/mattson is obviously better than jrad?

Daylight went through a lot to get to that realization.

Jrad causes mixed emotions.

hey, is joe russo's almost dead an even worse band name than the uncreative eponymous david Nelson and friends monicker?

I was thinking the HeadBand and JK Years.

...if DSO chose Stu Allen to replace JK in 2010 things would of been more profitable for the band.

But that’s just me .

https://archive.org/details/DSO2010-04-24.mxt.flac16

I was at that audition for Stu and the other guy in San Francisco

and was shocked that he was not selected,  but that's just me

But it kind of worked out for Phil And Stu

(since we can't have a band the caliber of the Q  as Phil and friends )

And Nelson does  cover some Grateful Dead songs of course some of them he was on the original recordings

mSince the early '60s, David Nelson has enjoyed a quietly successful musical career characterized by a willingness to experiment with improvisational song structures and playing. Coming out of a varied Haight-Ashbury scene bubbling with idiosyncratic artists, Nelson's music moved from the psychedelic country-rock of the New Riders of the Purple Sage in the early '70s to his own, more free-form David Nelson Band in the '90s, all the while gaining a devoted audience if not extensive commercial success. Nelson first began performing in the early '60s as a member of the Wildwood Boys with Jerry Garciaand Robert Hunter. Like his Wildwood bandmates, he became a major part of the late-'60s/early-'70s San Francisco music scene, maintaining a friendship with Garcia and Hunter which led to Nelson's appearances on three classic Grateful Dead records: Aoxomoxoa and the two landmark acoustic records of 1970, American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. With Garcia and John Dawson, Nelson formed psychedelic country-rock legends, the New Riders of the Purple Sage, in 1969, even singing their countercultural anthem, "Panama Red," before exiting the band. In the mid-'80s, Nelson performed as a member of the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band and as a member of the bluegrass band the Good Old Boys with Don Reno, Chubby Wise, and Frank Wakefield. Their album Pistol Packin' Mama was produced by Garcia. 1996 found Nelson forming his own David Nelson Band, playing shows coast-to-coast and garnering acclaim for their loose, improvisational performances of original songs, many of them co-penned with old friend Hunter. The David Nelson Band features noteworthy musicians on the San Francisco scene: guitarist/pedal steel player Barry Sess, who honed his skills in his own band, Cowboy Jazz, and in Kingfish with Bob Weir; Mookie Siegal on keyboards and accordion, who also played with Kingfish as well as Bob Weir's Ratdog; bassist Bill Laymon, whose various stints include the New Riders, Jefferson Starship, Kingfish, and the Jerry Garcia Band; and drummer Arthur Steinhorn(the New Riders, Kingfish, Cowboy Jazz). The band's debut album, Limited Edition, was released in 1996 and received significant airplay on commercial, college, and public radio stations. The live Keeper of the Key followed in 1997. The third album by the David Nelson Band, Visions Under the Moon, appeared in early 1999. Like the finest "jam bands" (the Grateful Dead, Phish, etc.), the David Nelson Band has already developed, and continues to develop, a loyal following of fans, called Freaks of Nature, or simply Freakies.

Freakies?

hmmm do I resent that?

Those where FUN shows at the San Francisco Regency. There where 2 Nights.

It could of been better if they opened the upper balcony. The place was Packed enough.

...management didn’t  want us up there.

The DSO moved to the Regency because the Great American Music Hall  wasn’t big enough anymore.

Now they don’t play in the City anymore.

-the other fun DSO show in SF was when Phil joined them for the first time.at the Philmore. I think this was close to the Rolling Stone Article on DSO.

https://archive.org/details/DSO2012-10-13.SBD.flac

-cool of Kevin Rosen stepping aside for Phil.

Do you like T-Ham's vocals?

i dont really care about them. i dont dislike them enough to take notice or mention them. i much prefer his vocals to phils. or pete sears.

Daylight went through a lot to get to that realization.

i had a good laugh here, solid zoning

And Nelson does  cover some Grateful Dead songs of course some of them he was on the original recordings

i guess technically they are covers, but any song that has nelson on the original recording, or friend of the devil, i dont really consider a cover, id say its equal on the cover song-o-meter to phil and friends, furthur, etc playing dead songs. its dubious territory.

A number of DNB songs sound like cousins to GD songs.

Diff. World def. has some similarities to Estimated.

Fable of a chosen one sounds GD like.

JK solo work is full of GD rifts.
