Strawbud, is that Glen Canyon Dam?  I drove by that and have pics of that year.

Reading "The Emerald Mile" at this moment. Story revolves around the dam and the flooding in '83. The Bureau of Rec is scrambling to release water so the dam doesn't blow and these these guys in a dory snuck on at Lee's Ferry at 11 PM to do a speed run while the BOR is dumping water. Ran Crystal and Lava at 70,000 cfs. GREAT book. Almost done. The stories of the mayhem of the river running - wow. Georgie White flipped one of her giant pontoon boats in Crystal at 70,000 cfs and lost all her passengers. "I told 'em to hang on. They don't make passengers like they used to."

I think the Bureau of Rec estimated a river rise of about 400 feet if the dam broke. Catastrophic, not only in the canyon, but beyond. The chutes they were releasing the water from, and the rock the dam was attached to, were getting eaten away by the force of the releases. Things were touch and go for a bit, and the dam was fortified with - yep - plywood.

Slick, I believe so but do not claim to be any semblance to a dam expert. The ongoing drought and other factors are surely making things increasingly precarious though. That book sounds fascinating and I'll add it to the queue. Thanks!

I e-mailed Strawbud off-site as to not hijack the thread, but I will post a couple of pics.

This ride into Crystal Rapid was deadly at 70,000 cfs. One died, a few injured.

Emerald Mile tour-west-boat-flip.jpg

They rode this wooden dory through day and night and set a speed record through the Grand at 70,000 cfs. A few days later, the flow went to 90,000.

I wrote a short piece of fiction about the dam collapsing in an earthquake.

My story is told from the perspective of being on a houseboat on Lake Powell when the dam breaks.

Wow, Joy. Sounds like an exciting ride, and an imaginative piece. But that first drop off.......  Where could someone read that? Published anywhere?

Got it blackrock. Thank you. Will read.

Playing chords above the capo? A new technique? Hmmmm.

Far be it for me to try to impose my will on things, but IMO these threads work better when the photos are taken by the person posting the photo.

But that's just me.

Still, lots of cool photos here.

Carry on.

But in the anything goes nature of this thread, how about this one from July of '95, which I didn't take...

From Jerry Garcia's final performance, 27 years ago tonight.

The night Jerry's musical journey ended.

And what a journey it was.

Sigh.

Best known as the location of the opening of the Andy Griffith Show.

^ For Sure!

A recent cruise through the Silver Lake hood of LA also brought me by the Music Box Steps - a famous episode haunt of Laurel & Hardy and The Three Stooges, et al. The more famous view is from the bottom though.

We have a ruling from the "Alito 5":  there was never such a stipulation that appears in the original text of the Phil Zone to this effect.

Nonetheless, here's one I took yesterday:

20220710_173533.jpg

Taken in front of the porch of Baked In Telluride after having the cat sit on my lap for nearly a half-hour.  He's been hanging out there religiously; likely because he's getting some scraps here and there due to people thinking he's malnourished.  Unfortunately, "Po" has kidney disease and his muscles are wasting away and he's skin and bones.  The "owners" even went so far as to put signs up on the porch asking people not to feed the cat.  Unfortunately, I think Po is hurting bad and in addition to food likes being able to work himself up purring to release endorphins or whatever that might bring some relief to the pain.  Forgot about the noise a cat will make when you try to interrupt it while comfortable (very short sound).

'72/73?

Neil at the Portland,Or. Memorial Coliseum, After the Gold Rush tour. Linda opened with Stone Pony.. Mid show, her boobs popped out of her blouse. Portland popo objected, came onstage and cited her for indecent exposure. I was 14, up close, loved it.

Neil was delayed waiting for Crosby to fly in to bolster an underselling tour. Hockey ice covered by plywood made the floor cold. Once things got underway, it was great. Got home late, parents were concerned. Not sure why they let me go in the first place, guess they were cooler than I knew.

Full moon rising last night.

^Nice! Thanks - I am always on the lookout for good eats

The owner lost everything in that horrible Talent OR fire recently, relocated here.  It's tiny (the left front room), has shakes, sandwiches, biscuits gravy, a few other things, but the guy was a total character.  If i'm ever in the area i'll drop by every time!

whoops

Nice pics in the Travel Folder, Noodler.

Daughter Melissa just sent me this one she took of Salem not long after we got him last year, keeping a close eye on daddy going into the store.

I find this one to be particularly cool, as it is at the "Ophir Loop" ...  which once was a bustling stop on the railroad at the turn off from the main hwy to get into the Ophir valley and the town proper (about 3 miles west).  Currently, it's mostly a ghost town with only two original structures functioning (one of which - close to this building - was very recently rehabbed).

I'm posting these for Strawbud. He's follow-up with some context/details.

Thanks Mike! These pics were recently taken at Travel Town Railroad Museum which is located in  the N/NE corner of LA's Griffith Park, adjacent CA Hwy 134. Admission is free and they also have a kiddie train that encircles the perimeter, making 2-3 passes on a ride that goes on for about 15-20 minutes for $3 or $4. Anyway, as you can see, the museum houses and maintains quite a load of impressive and historical hardware. Highly Recommended!

Hey doolittle...I spent a lot of time in Rock Hall growing up (sailed out of Osprey). Was eating crabs at Waterman's last month.

@nedb

Was at Waterman's a few nights ago.

Lot's of Osprey, Bald Eagles and Vultures fly within 50 feet of my bros house all day. You can almost touch them.

I was surprised the amount of Bald Eagles and Osprey. We were staying up past Chestertown. The elimination of DDT made this happen.

Chestertown is a nice town. Lot's of history and beautiful old buildings.

Approaching the Ophir Loop ... decommissioning the rail.  The structure in the upper right hand corner is still standing as an inhabitable structure.  The general store (number of posts above)  is just below that house and above the train.
