Memorial Day at Castle Air Museum.  Priceless stories and conversations from and with veterans from WWII through The Vietnam War.  Much respect.

1971 Festival poster. Jorma approved!

Actually, that's Paul Caruso...  a friend of Jimi's (Harmonica player, played on "My Friend", not the Gers guy listed)

Thanks for the clarification!
I was searching. Dweezil inutero?

(Likely Moon Unit in the oven, Dweezil didn't hatch until 69, and that "zoner salute" likely the reason he got cut from the Album Cover)

Meanwhile, in local news,  a few of the flytrap flowers produced seeds this year (smaller though), on to the slaughter

Best zappa album ever. We're only in it for the money.   Actually only zappa I liked.

mile 2 of a 70 mile race, Susquehanna River. I'm in the green shirt/white hat

Awesome. Any river rapid disasters ? That water looks like the Chicago river on saint pattys day.

No there are quite a few tricky spots/strainers and standing wave trains but no disasters this year. One year we swam 3 times and almost wrecked our boat on a submerged concrete piling tho. Epic water levels that year

I love that, Matt. Thanks.

Mt Shasta Kai 2021-06-10.jpg

Mt. Shasta, 06/11 - Yes!  He made it to the summit!  And survived...

Shasta Kai summit 2021-06-11 portrait.jpg

Wow, John, it seems like a hell of an accomplishment to summit Shasta solo. Kai doesn't seem to have limits in that area. Wow. And you, dad?

asaf.jpg

Hey Judit!

My main job was trying to keep Kai alive.  So, I made my backpack heavy with lots of water, warm clothing, tent, etc.  On Thursday, we established base camp at 11,000 feet on a relatively exposed ridge.   The winds flattened our tent to the point that it was pounding on our faces as we lay in our sleeping bags.  Amazingly, nothing broke on the tent (good poles, I  guess).  Outside, it was sideways snow/sleet.  I "managed" base camp by staying in my sleeping bag and napping, while Kai climbed.  Was certainly relieved when he returned to the tent at approx.  1:30pm.  The trek back down was brutal, given the water (from the elements) soaking through all layers of clothing.  Very steep descent and my left leg was doing most of the work to protect my right arthritic knee.  Left leg finally started giving out just as we finished the steep part.  It was the strangest feeling: no pain in my left leg, just the muscles giving out.  I was wondering if having a stroke or cerebral palsy was kind of like what I was experiencing (at least by my wonky movements).  I think that it was similar to weight lifting (or pushups): My leg's muscles could only go so far before they failed and I needed to take a break.  It was like doing "reps".  So grateful to finally get to the car, then home.

As for Kai: I imagine that he may have been the only one to summit yesterday.  The conditions were less than ideal.

Wow: A long post in the pics thread.

I wonder what Peak would have to say about this reckless act.

^Nice!

Gopher?

Sounds like you and Kai had a real adventure, Johnny. Is Shasta Kai's first 14er (solo or otherwise)?

Yes, this was Kai's first and he's now ready to do Mt. Whitney as soon as he can.

Looks like he may have caught the bug (and I may lose a knee)...

Whitney is busy this time of year, and I believe there's a lottery for summit permits, so you should get some time to heal up at least.

Most excellent meeting you Mike! Next time we can socialize more. Missed it by 2 f'n days.  But from what I understand, they were very lax with us yesterday.

Nice set lists from Ohio!

Mom passed in her sleep last night, would have been 95 on the 26...   both parents in 2 years, I know many of you have been thru this, hugs to all

My condolences, peace and strength to you and your family...

I'm sorry to hear about your mom's passing, Noodler, and your dad's too.

I have to say I'm impressed by her hoisting a couple of zoner salutes though.

Much love druba

Your folks did a good job here on earth.

Sorry for your loss. Peace and love to you and your family

So sorry to hear, Noodler. Love and comfort to you and those who knew her.

((( RIP Noodler Mama )))

94 on the cusp of 95, what a run!

May her spirit be at peace and you and your family carry on her legacy.

All the best to you Druba.

She looks like a wonderful, classy lady, but one not too shy to give a classic Zoner salute!

Peace be with you and your family.

Dead_3.jpeg.

So sorry to hear that, Druba. Remember the good times and try to stay thankful that she had a really good run and brought us all what surely seems like a great son as well. Peace and positive vibes to you and your family.

RIP Noodler's mom. 94 ain't too shabby.

Our condolences to you, Druba.

Sorry about your mother.

Great Dr. John pic. Malice in the chalis.

Thanks for the love everyone, much appreciated!!!  She was given 3 - 6 months to live after her lung cancer diagnosis in early January, being a strong soul, she took it to the limit.  Suppose the good news is she slept most of the time, apparently pain free (bro, the dr, had been giving her morphine in recent days).  She died in her sleep around 5am.

She grew up in Virginia, her dad Jimmy Barnes, had a malt shop in Norfolk VA, he'd serve Blacks when White biz didn't do that down there, but as a vet of WWI, he felt the need to treat everyone as equals.  He went on to get an award from General Douglas McArthur for his humanitarianism, as most of his customers were Navy folks working at the Naval Base(s) there.  Those ideals were strong with my mom.  She was always a fierce fighter for human rights, and traveled the world when she wasn't working, helping others as only she could.

She went to College at William and Mary, then Grad School at Columbia where she met my dad.  After having 2 kids in upstate New York, she moved to California where my dad got a new job working for his dad.  After a few miscarriages, she still wanted another child, so I was adopted.  She spent her life teaching special education to Jr High kids in the Los Angeles County School system (Temple City), then upon retiring, moved back east to Washington DC where she volunteered at the White House for 20 years.  She's traveled the world many times, with Antarctica being the only continent she didn't visit.  Will miss you mom, luv ya!

I luv all you crazy zoners too, hugs to everyone, and looking forward to dancing with some of you crazy fools in the future, long live the Grateful Dead!

And now, a few mom pics

Amazing.

thats a great story and she seems like she had a helluva lotta love in that little body...RIP your mom and may her love and lessons live on in these trying times we find ourselves in right now

PEACE to you and your fam

It's wonderful that they chose you to be in their family and your mom sounds like such a smart, wise, loving and compassionate person; I think she gave that to you as your way of being, too. Maybe dad did, too, but that's for another time.

Wishing you the knowledge that you are loved by many, and held by all.

love and light_1.jpg

So many said it so well above. You are proud of her as I am sure she was proud of you. As others have said, she did a great job.

Sometimes I think I would give anything just to talk to my folks again one more time.  I guess that will never go away.  May you and your family be at Peace.

Very sorry to read of the loss of your mom, Noodler. And of your father earlier. My brother and i were adopted too. Thanks for your description of your parents. What exceptional people. It takes a wide open view about "this one existence" we're born into to consciously take in and raise another child as your own. Your parents are a great testament to your sense of humor, kindness and wit.

((((((((((Noodler)))))))))

I'm overwhelmed by the love everyone, you open my heart
