He's a talented young guy with fresh ideas on jazz, and his approach is a little different. Lots of players on stage, two drummers (rare for jazz) and an open dance floor (virtually unheard of in jazz).
As always tix are very pricey at the Miner, but I think if you went you'd see something different than traditional straight jazz.
Kamasi brought a little sunshine to otherwise dreary weekend.
Two drummers tested the acoustic limits of that great mid town venue but overall a great bopping performance with elements of free jazz and acid jaz but in a funky more structured format.
Cool set up with a standing floor area holding 100 or so and the rest seated.
I would recommend seeing these guys if they come around.
The upright bass player, Miles Mosley, was amazing. He took a several minute solo which had the drum kit going off like a set of sympathetic strings. I assume it was intentional, but nothing I've ever witnessed.
