Post on Gear Page thread "Phil Lesh is Underrated"
"You should hear some of that live stuff on a good system, the bass is extraordinary.
He's a uniquely musical bassist, up there with Paul McCartney for carving out an original niche in a band sound.
He's very well respected, not underrated at all particularly in the context of the Grateful Dead's career.
If he's "under-anything-d" maybe under-utilized as an influence for other bassists.
He's got his adherents as do all the Dead's members, but like a lot of that school the emulation is cosmetic, superficial.
Hardware, basically. Not the actual content.
His sh*t is like Thelonius Monk in a way, everybody loved Monk, nobody played like him tho.
Just too unique, too out conceptually from the traditional role to copy.
Still a couple of great players out there doing their own thing "under the influence", active electronics, long scale Modulus 6-strings, Meyers rigs, or equivalent earthquake inducing systems.
Phil was obviously influential on the production end of things.
Under utilized as a specifically musical influence tho."

His problem might never have been with Phil, and even if it was I doubt that it would diminish his respect for the mans capabilities and influence.

That seems to be the theme.
I've never seen the bad side. She's kind of captivating, the times I've seen her.

Saying Phil is like Monk is a
Saying Phil is like Monk is a really big compliment. I see what he's saying as Phil uses the tritone to bounce to different chords and modes at times. Very Bach like in approach. Phil's musicianship is impeccable.
