Lager is visiting Seattle Wa

Forums:

Hello. I'll be visiting Seattle next week. I'm arriving Sunday evening, and will leave bright early the next Saturday morning. Mostly working, but might have a couple evenings out and way from work.

What are the places that everyone recommends to avoid for eating or visiting? What the secret gems no one knows about I should visit? I'll be in Ravenna near light rail & not far from University district where I'm working.

I might go see Steve Earle if I can get away from my duties. Any local Dead cover bands playing during the week?

Go to NW Hospital and ask to see the room aka shrine where I was born!laugh

Born indoors. Interesting. That wouldn't have been my guess.

Go to your local street corner and throw Zippy a dime or 2.

Look at Mikey and BrianK the new self appointed Ed Rosenthals having a moment together. Get a room guys! LOLlaugh

Fuckin' jokes!

I left the scene pretty much in the 80's because of people like you.

And the scene was all the better for it.

I feel like I've missed some kinda zone dialogue that was occuring with Doolittle, Brian, and Mike, but I don't really want to look for it. If you guys need a conflict mediator, let me know, I can help

If you do end up renting a car, you could consider driving down to the suburb of Renton and Greenwood Memorial Park to see the Jimi Hendrix grave and memorial.   For years, Jimi's family couldn't afford anything but a simple marker that kept getting stolen, but once his dad was able to settle the lawsuits over the right to Jimi's music, he built an impressive yet tasteful monument to his son.  The cemetary is about a mile off I-405 and you can't miss the monument/grave site once you get there.  It's huge.

Thanks Ken!

Hi!  Here's the Jambase calendar for your week in Seattle area -- looks like you'll have to miss Billy Strings @ Marymoor, but could catch Bonnie Raitt w/ Mavis Staples or Courtney Barnett w/ locals Sleater Kinney later in the week: https://www.jambase.com/concerts/us/washington/concerts-in-seattle-tacom...

Ravenna is a great residential area to stay in!

Close by neighborhoods Wallingford and Fremont are interesting.

Get an after-work kayak and excellent tacos and margs here -- just south of Ravenna on the Lake Union Cut (canal) : https://g.page/agua-verde-paddle-club?share

I used to volunteer at the Center for Wooden Boats on Lake Union, which has interesting exhibits if boats are of interest: https://g.page/cwbheritage?share

You'll be close to the SoundGarden (the band took the name from this park) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Sound_Garden

... and to this beach for a swim: https://goo.gl/maps/K9CFT7b7XPGX41Wf8

You're not too far from the only GD mecca I'm aware off, the Blue Moon Tavern.... https://g.page/bluemoonseattle?share

Another fun after-work excursion -- catch a ferry to Bainbridge Island (30 minute trip)... get a hold of me if you decide to do this and I can send more details about the island.

>>>And the scene was all the better for it.

Yeah that's why every cool place they ever played banned them because the scene was so cool back then. LOL.laugh

I was for the better because of waking up !

Lager, your offer to help as a conflict mediator was sweet and generous. I like to hope they can do it on their own, but if they'll take your assistance it might move things along.

I just did a trip thru the area, and while getting shot at is worse the the zonal feud (my trip vs your soon to be trip vs those tripping), here's a few thoughts;

Seattle has it's usual spots (space needle, produce row, bubble gum wall, etc).

The ferry ride to Bainbridge Island is kind of cool.  Great views, weather permitting, then have a meal along the waterfront. Many options, every place i've been to so far has been great (best hollandaise sauce i've ever had, so much so, that I just tried to recreate it yesterday).  Can do the ferry ride on foot, no need for a car.  It's all right there, and there's usually live music in the evenings.

If you do feel like driving, we really enjoyed our stay at Coupeville, and the Front Street Grill has a large local mussel menu that might be worth the drive.

Thanks, Lager. That's very generous of you. I might just take you up on that.

On Bainbridge, both walking distance from the ferry:

Pub w/ music some nights and a great deck on the marina: https://harbourpub.com/

Recommend this fine dining restaurant on the main street, the chef/owner is a friend and former work colleague: http://restaurantmarchebainbridge.com/

If you go in the evenings -- just make sure to track the last ferry time to return to Seattle!

Lager,

If you're working near UW, I always support Big Time brew on the Ave. Always worth a pint to support local.  I also always support Thai Tom on the Ave if you like Thai.  Great lunch place.  They get knocked on Yelp because it's always busy, few seats and used to be cash only.  But if you like spicy... Also assume you'll stop by Pike Market.  For lunch, I like Lowell's. They have a small bar on the second floor and love sipping Georgetown brews over chowder, watching the ferries... you get the picture.

Ravenna and Wallingford are sleepy but I like Fremont as a neighborhood.  Take rideshare to Gasworks Park then take a walk to Fremont (stop by Fremont Brewing on the way). Good places to hang in Fremont in the evening.  Ballard is cool too but a bit further away.  If you head all the way in that direction, might as well stop by the Ballard locks, maybe hit Discovery Park and sit outside for drinks at Ray's Boathouse.  All this stuff is north of downtown.   You're visiting at the best time of year...

Marche's is one of the places I've eaten at, food was great!  (though I had a temporary crown come off, lol)

^^^ Historic Lowell's rocks! Great view of the water too.

Noodler, hope you got to meet Chef Greg and his partner Betsy.

I enjoyed a delicious vegan small plate dinner there last year.

I understand there's a little record store in a basement under a small theater somewhere in that town.

The Yelp reviews make it sound like a pretty good place, although they do say that the proprietor is a bit of a snob.

Go figure.

^LOL

>>>The Yelp reviews make it sound like a pretty good place

Lol.  I checked them out too and they were mostly positive.  Won't share the link out of respect for the Zone policy and the owner's privacy, but the small handful of negative reviews mostly griped about the "check your bag at the door" policy and one even claimed there was a homeless dude posing as an employee taking bags at the door.

> a homeless dude posing as an employee taking bags at the door.

Sounds like Zippy is Yelp famous.

Wow-some amazing tips and suggestions here. I really appreciate it. LLOLLO, you've really helped me with amazing tips for both Portland and Seattle, so thank you! Ken, Noodler, and Vagrante, thank you also! I have more tips than time, which is a great problem to have!

I am so disappointed, 25 posts in and no one suggested

Hookers and Blow

^^ Go M's

I imagine that's for the Mariners. They sure kicked the Yankees ass while they were up there. My cousins who live there were happy. I wasn'tsurprise

Unless I get severe flight delays, tickets dry up, or some other variable, definitely flying in and catching Billy Strings on Sunday the 14th. First time at Marymoor.

Seattle was a blast last year. I'll be in town again Sunday-thursday this next week. Let me know if you are around

I'll be around, Lager.  If you want to meet up for some pints and/or grub, just let me know.  I'm still in the U-District, close to the U-District Station on the light rail.

If you want to catch some Dead music, the Andy Coe Band plays for free from 9-11:30 p.m. on Monday nights at the Blue Moon Tavern, which is about a 5 block walk from the U-District Station.

I'm going to see Patti Smith play at the Woodland Park Zoo that Wednesday, the 16th.  It's sold out, but I bet you can score a ticket if you show up at the venue.

Dave, wonderful! I work at UW, stay in Ravenna. I was looking for dead music-so that's a great tip! If you think you will make it Monday, lets connect there.

Re: music-I'm gonna skip Patti, but I am going to see Messer Chups Sunday night and get some Surf/Sci-Fi/Rockabilly fix in, and maybe Stanley Jordan at the jazz club tues or wed.

Right on, Lager!  I can make it to the Blue Moon on Monday night.  I'll be the guy in a black Baltimore Orioles baseball hat.

LLOLLO is our own Julie McCoy!!!!!!!

Langer, i so look forward to your photos (:

Safe and Fantastical travels !!

See you Monday night Dave

BSS, thanks for that tip!

JLP, I'll try and take lots of photos-thanks for enjoying them

Hey Lager.  Hope you're having a good trip to Seattle.

Wanted to give you the heads up that Andy Coe is sick, so unfortunately, there's no show tonight.  I'm going to have a pint or two up here at the Blue Moon, and have a few bombers rolled and ready to go if you still feel like making the trek.  It's been hot today, so if you're not feeling it, that's okay too.

Peace out.

Dave! Sorry I missed you. I showed up last night, sat at the bar and realized they had canceled the music, so I only sat there about 5 minutes before I headed up to the Little Red Hen to see what was going on.

I didn't see anyone with an orioles hat, so sorry I missed you. Also: I had a few moments on Sunday and visited your record store. It's 100% the kind of record store I tend to frequent-your pursuit & offerings of the music is exemplar!

It is the hottest week in Seattle, but still cooler than KY. I got 12.5 miles of walking yesterday-even with working 8-5...I was blazing

Sorry I missed you, but sounds like you are getting a good tour of the city.  Glad to hear you enjoyed your visit to the store.  I was down at the ballpark catching the Orioles/Mariners game. Safe travels.
