Let's Rank Grateful Dead Songs

Forums:

Deadheads are famous for compulsively ranking things. Let's rank the Dead's catalog from best to least best.

I'll start:

1.) Ripple

Set I

1.) Ripple

Set II

1) Dark Star

E:

1) Baby Blue

I just want to add that shenanigans will not be tolerated in this thread.

For example, if any Weir/Barlow songs are spotted in the top 20, you will be banned from this thread and probably VLZ altogether.

Alright. Let's have fun!

No Weir/Barlow but a Dylan cover? Hmmmmmmmm..........

1. dark star

Feel like a stranger

Fuckin ban me

High Time {Electric}

Friend of the Devil {Acoustic}

Uncle Johns Band

I'd rank estimated and let it grow much higher than ripple

I'll take Jack Straw/ Shakedown...Cold Rain....and a killer Help>>schlip

Morning dew

Several I always come back to.

Kinda bored with dark star and st steve really doesn't do it any more for me.....burned out on it.

What's that scraping sound?

As a composition, Terrapin Station seems to be up near the top of their songs.

So many songs released in 1970 were top notch.

There were some good Bobby tunes as well.

For #1 political content, possibly Throwing Stones.

Blues for Allah

Playing in the Band

Let's not.

stella blue

My top 20:

WRS  FOTM  DS  UJB  China Doll PITB  High Time  China>Rider  Estimated Prophet

ROR  H>S>F Stella  Terrapin Station  Shakedown St.  Candyman  Eyes  BEW

I want to switch 2 out to put He's Gone and Row Jimmy but not sure what I would replace?

Fun thread!

Concept was great, Mark...execution needs work....

most versatile: Bertha

open shows/sets, played mid first /second set, close sets, segue-able (GSET,Good Lov'n etc) and encored (my favorite Dark Star> Bertha on NYE 1981)

has Bertha been played as stand alone encore by the GD? I remember PLF/Furthur maybe doing this.

Loser, China doll, Morningdew, Jack a roe, Masterpiece, Brokedown

Brokedown, masterpiece, jack a roe, morning dew, china doll, loser

Keep up, Slack. GD songs, not covers.

#1. If The Shoe Fits.

Slacker never saw the band in person.  Only heard stories and listened to live concert recordings which aren't the same.

I love that song Trucking!

Sorry, didn't know covers didn't count. New here.

Not pleased with some of the posts in this thread.

Not pleased at all.

Ripple is a sing-a-long throwaway, Mark.

jambone is right.

Comes A Time

Terrapin

Sugar Magnolia

Playing in The Band

GoddamnMit, Ned!

Hey Mark...speaking of Ripple, I'm going to the Kung Fu show at the 'lectric Ripple tomorrow night if you care to join.

2.) Stella Blue

Man I would love to but I'm on baby duty tomorrow night. It's so annoying how one year olds need constant love and supervision.

Babies, so needy.

254.  What's Become of the Baby?

>>>What's that scraping sound?

<Insert burn about Six's saggy old balls, dragging through the dirt>

"Black-Throated Wind" not in the top 20  ??

I was going to go straight to the bottom but aiq beat me to it

That's a good pick for #254.

Not.

Can Franklin's tower just be struck from the Dead repertoire?  I've had more than enough of that one.

My balls are the biggest, Mark. That's good that you recognize that. They make yours look so tiny in comparison - like a one year old's that needs constant supervision.

I'd actually like to suggest that every song that isn't either a Jerry ballad or a Dark Star from '69-'74 be permanently removed from the Grateful Dead catalog.

ha! jr,  franklin's is way up there on the list for me.

it is danceable and the lyrics make me think about good things.

hmm, what is a help/slip without a frank  ???

Everyone knows the top three Grateful Dead songs are Day Job, Don't Ease Me In and If the Shoe Fits. To suggest anything different just shows a poster's ignorance.

Six, you've been banned from this thread for the rest of the day. We'll consider tomorrow a new day, and see how it goes.

Thanks, man.

Don't try to scare me. You couldn't even hold one of my balls, Mark.

Please don't make this any more weird, Six.

We'll see you tomorrow, ok?

6, this is for you:

Del: You play with your balls a lot.

Neal: I do not play with my balls.

Del: Larry Bird doesn't do as much ball-handling in one night as you do in an hour!

Neal: Are you trying to start a fight?

Del: No. I'm simply stating a fact. That's all. You fidget with your nuts a lot.

Neal: You know what'd make me happy?

Del: Another couple of balls, and an extra set of fingers?

Where would you guys rank Blues for Allah?

>>We'll see you tomorrow, ok?

If you're lucky.

Can we change this thread to Let's Rank On Grateful Dead Songs?

I'm outa here, as BTW and Cassidy are easy top 20!

and not much lyric wise to PITB or DS.

i hate this thread.

That hurts, Jonny.

Oh yeah it's the scraping of the bottom of the barrel, Jonny. I just remembered. That's what the scraping sound is.

I bet the local bartenders love you at closing time, Six.

They all love me all the time. I'm the best tipper in town. I get a lot of free drinks.

I'm not around for closing time too much, though. That's past my bedtime - unless the band has a gig.

no love for jack straw?

Lyrics?

92. Til the Morning Comes

>>i hate this thread.

This was a troll thread from its inception. Shame on you Mark.

>I'd actually like to suggest that every song that isn't either a Jerry ballad or a Dark Star from '69-'74 be permanently removed from the Grateful Dead catalog. <

I'll stick the 11 right up your ass pal.

>>>>i hate this thread.....

^^^find your own hate, buddy.

lol

ain't no time

Haven't listened to grateful dead or any jamband music in 39 months and 27 days. Those days are over. I grew up.

that's it for the other one

>>or any jamband music in 39 months and 27 days. Those days are over.

JR, it sure is good we've got this little dbmb for you to share that with us.

There is a thread for sharing music you are currently listening to.

"Contribute or fuck off!"

Is that what you're saying to me slacker?

If we are considering Brent songs GD songs then they all belong on the bottom of the list, along with Donna & Vince songs.  Dead last on the list = I Will Take You Home

Is JR a Kurt Vile worshipping hipster like Ateix?

There is a strong case to be made for Sunrise being the worst GD song of all time.

simmer down erryone......

lets have a strain changer...

Is blue dream OK?  Or too commercial, like Fat Tire?

This thread has brought out a lot of emotion in everyone.

Indeed. The guy who suggested Estimated Prophet and Let It Grow were better songs than Ripple seemed particularly unhinged.

Clearly the ravings of a very sick and deeply delusional person.

blue dream will do fine...

Awful cold and dark like a dungeon
Maybe get a little bit darker 'fore the day

Hipsters, tripsters,
real cool chicks, sir,
everyone's doin' that rag

You needn't gild the lily, offer jewels to the sunset
No one is watching or standing in your shoes
Wash your lonely feet in the river in the morning
Everything promised is delivered to you

The guy who said he was not pleased with some of the posts in this thread seems like a complete tight-ass control freak.

And the guy who keeps track of the months and days since he listened to a certain genre of music appears to have quite the case of OCD.

Ripple, hahaha, clear indication of a poser.  Stella Blue is a solid choice, better.

Slacker at least had a knowledgeable respectful list..

Bertha has always been my favorite. It should be top five or top ten and best cover, too many great songs.

Best cover would have to be Morning Dew..

Mark, if you are ever in Vermont I will gladly have you over. We will lounge in sweats, drink bad beer and listen to every Picasso Moon ever played. It will be a the most high, and maybe even epic!

>Indeed. The guy who suggested Estimated Prophet and Let It Grow were better songs than Ripple seemed particularly unhinged.

Clearly the ravings of a very sick and deeply delusional person<

Mark, I'd rank Black-Throated wind higher ripple as well.

Should I be concerned?

>Best cover would have to be Morning Dew..<

I'd rather hear Big River

For me, Ripple is one of the rare tunes that's better on the album than it is live.

>>>>>Those days are over. I grew up.

What is the correct music for grown-ups to listen to?

Ripple

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come through the music?
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps they're better left unsung.
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of man.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

You, who choose to lead, must follow
But if you fall you fall alone.
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.

Oh, Robert Hunter; you're such a poser, brah.

>I'd rather hear Big River

That makes one of you.

Fat Tire is highly over rated imo. Overpriced PBR.

Ripple is a fine song, first thing that comes to mind is that creepy miniseries they pimped it out to a few years ago.

I always enjoy a Weather Report suite

Which Grateful Dead song do the tribal elders like best, Fog?

Me & My Uncle?

Live Scarlet Begonias.

Live Scarlet > Studio Fire

If you see any Native Americans there in CO you can ask them. They might say Ripple, you can report back here later on your findings..

Meh. Most of the Native Americans in Denver are passed out under the bridges on Speer.

Wonder where this group would rank Wharf Rat.  Just curious.

I gave a dollar yesterday to a drunk NA under the bridge at Broadway/I-25. He snatched the $1, looked down at it hoping for something bigger. Never said anything. I thought about him last night as I was laying in my comfy bed.

Loser is a good song that bridged many GD era.

Thats a nice thing to do Ned, that sort of kindness will always come back to you.

Loser is a top five for me.

Ironically, the Indian "reservation" under the Colfax & Speer intersection is full of litter. Guess the Great Spirit doesn't believe in recycling.

Seriously tho, I'd rank Wharf Rat in the top 5. Great song.

It's a cultural thing. The Navajos litter enough to make an Indian cry.

Wharf Rat is Top 5 ballads, and Top 10 GD songs.

All of this NA trolling would probably be more effective if Fog was actually NA.

Either way, Comes A Time is also in the top 5.

You can't have 8 "Top 5" songs, Mark. Sorry.

Honestly, there are a handful of tunes that I don't overly care for, but I'm good with virtually anything. There's no doubt that I have a soft spot for certain Jerry ballads, especially Comes a Time and China Doll, but I also love me some Bobby rockers and Brent ballads and rockers.

Generally, for me, it's not what they played, but rather how they played it.

Technicalities, Ned. There are at least 15 songs in the top 5.

Anybody know of the definitive To Lay Me Down? Can't say I've ever really heard a completely satisfying version of that one, although it's obviously a top 5 song.

We don't have Native American reservations in this area and the roads are littered with garbage and trash, i'm sure thats a cultural thing also.

This Native American mocking is step up from Mark talking about Sixers balls, i'll give you that.

It's important to set a standard, Fog.

I think he really got excited posting about my balls, Fog. That made me slightly uncomfortable, btw.

Meanwhile, Mark - did you see the Grateful Dead more times than I did too? Can you post all your tickets for me by 5 PM MDST? Thanks in advance.

Mark, you should just be honest and ask for a tea bagging from Sixer, it might cure the infatuation.

Or would you rather talk about why you called Robert Hunter a poser.

>>I've ever really heard a completely satisfying version of that one, although it's obviously a top 5 song.

You're off the hook, Mark. It's a dirge, not a ballad, so it can be dropped from your top 5. I think that Black Peter is in the same category.

bird song

I disagree, BK. It's such a beautiful, mournful lyric and melody. I like the slower, contemplative Jerry numbers.

Really enjoyed that Irvine Meadows version, Judit. Thank you.

Believe it or Not is a Jerry power-ballad!

Oh also, hey Fo6.

Just want you guys to know I acknowledge you. You're doing strong work in this thread; both of you.

Thank you, Mark.  You too. Have a nice weekend,  and a nice holiday if you are religiously persuaded.

Thanks Six. I hope you and you saggy old balls have a nice holiday weekend as well.

Do songs off of Ace and Garcia even count? What about other Jerry stuff? This is crazy

I know you love my balls, Mark. It's very cute.

The Wheel and Birdsong are included, yes. Top 5 songs.

Did the Dead ever cover Greats Balls of Fire?

No, Six. A real Deadhead would know that.

Go listen to your Radiohead albums, ya fuckin' hipster.

I have a new album that has Radiohead, Kurt Vile and Bon Iver all jamming together.

Awesome, Six.

Hey, you remember that time you were feeling all butthurt about something, and you were like "Derrrrr you never seens der Phils Lesh. Derrrrrr."

And I was like "Um, yes I have, Six."

And you were like "Derrrrr I makes bets. Derrrrrr."

And then I posted all my stubs, and made you look like a complete jackass?

That was fun. smiley

china cat sunflower

Comes A time

Stella Blue

Then the rest.

These 3 are all top 25

Mission In The Ran

To Lay Me Down

Deal

Mark, you can remember it whatever way you have to to feel good about yourself. I understand.

But If you really remembered correctly - the bet was that you had to prove things to MY satisfaction (not yours) and you still have not proven to me those were your stubs, Mark.

Anyone could have sent you those pictures to post.

So you prance around like you are some kind of "winner" and keep pretending if you want, but....

The one thing that is painfully obvious is that this is very important to you - so why not follow through and prove it to my satisfaction? Is it because you don't have the balls?

Mail me ail me all the stubs this morning postmarked today 4/15/17 and I will consider them. Any post mark after today will not pass muster and I will continue to think you are the one who is most butthurt..

So 120 posts into this thread, have you figured out anything?

Here's the results so far

1) If the shoe fits

4) To Lay Me Down

9) Mission In The Rain

92) Til The Morning Comes

254) What's become of the baby

Mark, the nostalgic tribute to Dogman is a creative touch. Still Bro, all this talk of ticket stubs and you seeing Phil and Friends is frankly the aftermath of a very deranged not well mentally individual, package this with all the other lies you boasted about various things the overall conclusion here is you don't have a grasp on reality enough to tell between truth and lies. How about you start telling the truth here and admit you may have a problem. Naturally i'm bringing this up because i care.

How many times did you see the GD?

I saw Jerry 300 times.

I enjoy watching Fo6 fail. I admit that.

I feel like we've put a pretty solid list together here. Some great contributions; some not so great contributions, too.

Perfect timing for me to check in. Typical Mark - lots of talk, but very little balls.

Hush, Fo6. It's pretty obvious you've been monitoring this thread with great interest for many days.

Are you kidding? I programmed a bot to tell me if you merely open the page alone - even if you don't post.

I track your mouse or swiping movements (depending on which platform you use) and have a list compiled on an hourly basis which websites you visit.

Cool, Fo6. Here's a documentary on dolphins I think you'll enjoy:

https://youtu.be/vYTnky1Mt_Y

Thank you, Mark I will check that out later.

But, Mark. Come on! That's quite enough porn you've been surfing this morning. You have a wife and child. Spend some time away from the screen.

Sorry, 6of; I'm going to have to ask you to leave this thread again. Your participation was always conditional, and you blew it.

We'll catch you later, man.

Marky Bro, you do realize the deterioration begins right at age 40, you are not a young man anymore.

Also Sixy warned you about your habitual masturbation problem because he cares.

That's exactly true, Fog. He is at the at the age where he shouldn't be spilling his T all over willy nilly - and clearly - based on his shunnng post directed at me - he is in denial about his addiction.

Now, now kids. How is it possible to have low t and be a masturbation addict?

Everyone know that masturbating too much will lower your T like a leaking bucket, Brian.

Is that the Chi or the T, or both?

18.) Sugaree

27.) If you say bad things about me

28.) It Hurts Me Too

lazy lightning>supplication top 20 for sure.

That's top ten for me, pyramid dude.

Top 30, maybe. I like those songs, but I wouldn't rank them higher than Garcia/Hunter's best work, which covers at least 20 songs, if not more.

so dark star at #1

what makes up the rest of the top 20?

I wouldn't put Dark Star at #1. I think Ripple is the best song they ever wrote.

what about

when push comes to shove?

Operator is one of their more well crafted songs, as far as writting goes

pride of cucamonga

also, why did they never play that song live?

232.) Push Comes to Shove

^haha

seriously tho, france is top 50, right?

Is Days Between in the top 20?

Days is a weird one, because the lyric is brilliant, but the arrangement doesn't do much.

I can't really rank it. Not top 20, but it's still important in the songbook. Not sure where that puts it.

So, this thread isn't really rating GD tunes, but rather Hunter/Garcia tunes. I guess it could be the entire catalog, but with he caveat that the Hunter/Garcia ones are inherently better than the Barlow/Weir or Barlow/Mydland, and that the H/G ballads have to be close to the top.

Too many rules, Mark. It makes my head hurt.

Folks can rank whichever songs they want in whatever order they choose.

I think it would be objectively difficult to put the Weir/Barlow contributions on the same level critically as the Garcia/Hunter songs, but that hasn't stopped folks from trying.

13.) He's Gone

two souls in communion top 5

Only the Chris Robinson version, PH.

^noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :)

Unbroken Chain and Box of Rain are ranked pretty high on my list.

Agreed. Box Of Rain is a masterpiece.

Black Muddy River and So Many Roads.

China Rider to end the first set 83 style.

You're overestimating some of the Garcia tunes and underestimating some of the others. You're just a romantic for Jerry, you big lug!

Top 5 in no particular order:

Crazy Fingers

Other One

Wharf Rat

Eyes of the World

Ramble On Rose

Let It Grow

Terrapin

Jack Straw

UJB

Stella Blue

OK top 10 in no particular order.

57) Feedback

232) Samba in the Rain

71) Mason's Children

47.) Built To Last

27) Estimated Prophet

17) Shakedown Street

3) Help on the Way

Have to say Six's ranking prowess is pretty solid here.

41) West LA Fadeaway

23) Hell in a Bucket

18) Standing on the Moon

Somebody throw me a ranking on Althea?

Where does Blow Away rank?

It's another song I prefer to ripple

11) eleven?

Althea is #9, tied with Black Throated Wind and Wharf Rat.

More later - I am going in to see a 40th Anniversary 2 Sevens Clash show with Culture featuring Joseph's son on lead vocals.

so hell in a bucket is really #150

You can rate Hell in a Bucket however you want, but it is definitely their #1 video.

Weather Report Suite

Let it Grow

China/Rider

yeah bk, the hell in a bucket video is EPIC.

https://youtu.be/cH7I6ibA-SM

Goddamn. Cocaine really is a hulluva drug.

there #1 video.

14.) Attics Of My Life

Eyes of the World is at the bottom of my list.

I'm not afraid of the controversy, so here it goes:

16) Looks Like Rain

Box of Rain  ~ Unbroken Chain

Uncle Johns Band ~ Smokestack Lightnin'

Weather Report Suite ~ Easy Wind

Here Comes Sunshine ~ Samba In The Rain

Other One ~ Let Me Sing Your Blues Away

Operator ~ Till The Morning Comes

If The Shoe Fits ~ The Eleven

Maybe You Know How I Feel

Revolutionary Hamstrung Blues

Dark Star ~ High Time

i think looks like rain is a great song. the one from academy of music in march of 1972 is stellar. best rendition imo. so good.

216) Looks Like Rain

8) China Cat Sunflower

42) Mountains of the Moon

9) Scarlet Begonias

26) Brown Eyed Women

19) Let it Grow

416) Easy Answers

interesting, west la over mountains.

nice thread.

Can unreleased classics B included?   If so then:

Barbed Wire Whipping Party

227) Liberty

128) Day Job

No Cosmic Charlie or Born Cross Eyed?

Believe It Or Not is also a swell tune.

Near the top with Can't Come Down and Mindbender...im also fond of Cream Puff War and Alice D. Millionaire

>>interesting, west la over mountains.

By one spot. If you included some PLF versions of Mountains - it might have scored higher - but we are going on GD versions only.

I'd put Believe it or Not at #8.

Cryptical Envelopment

Alligator

You Don't Have To Ask

Truckin

107) Cardboard Cowboy

173) Mexicali Blues

69) Loose Lucy

6) Unbroken Chain

new speedway boooooooogie is up there.

maybe #17

17) Caution (Do Not Step On The Tracks)

16) New Speedway Boogie

22) stagger lee

The Eleven top 5 for me.

been loving 2nd set of 4/12/78. Jerry dancing, doing windmills by Truckin' & playing drums during break. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmr3o0_92f0&t=4504s

Well. Things have clearly gone off the rails in here.

Scarlet top 10? UBC top 6? Let It Grow top 20?

You pay somebody a modest compliment, and they go and let it get to their head, and start actin' all crazy.

Must be underrated...

Your rain falls like crazy fingers
Peals of fragile thunder keeping time
Recall the days that still are to come some sing blue.
Hang your heart on laughing willow stray
Down to the water, deep sea of love
Beneath the sweet calm face of the sea swift undertow.

Life may be sweeter for this, I don't know,
See how it feels in the end.
May lady lullaby sing plainly for you soft, strong, sweet and true.
Cloud hands reaching from a rainbow tapping at the window, touch your hair
So swift and bright strange figures of light float in air.

Who can stop what must arrive now? something new is waiting to be born
Dark as the night you're still by my side shine inside .
Gone are the days we stopped to decide where we should go, we just ride.
Gone are the broken eyes we saw through in dreams gone, both dream and lie.

Life may be sweeter for this, I don't know,
Feels like it might be all right,
While lady lullaby sings plainly through you love still rings true.
Never could reach it, just slips away but I try.

I like Crazy Fingers. Top 20.
