Life Expectancy Through the Ages

Forums:

Yesterday I was nerding out, wondering about all of our "diseases of aging," and thinking about how they weren't an issue until recently because people didn't live that long. I did some research, and boy was I wrong.

The big factor is infant mortality rates, which have declined dramatically since the Industrial Revolution. As a result, life expectancies are way higher.  The reality is, though, that even 600 years ago in Europe, if you lived to the age of 10, you'd probably live to be around 70. The lifespan in Ancient Greece was very similar to ours. Medieval Islamic scholars often lived well into their 80s.

Interesting stuff.

i think alcohol causes cancer.

live every day as if it's your last

because one day you'll be right

I'm nine and a half years into my second life and six and a half years into my third.

It's been observed in recent years that life expectancy for white people in the US has declined...

"Drug overdoses, liver disease and suicide were the main drivers of the gloomy trends among whites in recent years"...

Government saves lives.

FACT

"Can" save lives. Can also end lives.

The Castro government is the perfect example of that.

Cheeto Mussolini will reverse declining white male LE rates!

They're takin' yer years, folks.  Sad.  Well, no more! Right?

Interesting that you should mention Orange Julius Caesar, Bluest. The article I posted notes that "Recent research has documented surprising increases in death rates among less educated whites. Last year, a paper by Anne Case and Angus Deaton documented rising death rates among middle-age white Americans, particularly those with no more than a high school education. Other research has found rising rates among younger whites."

It definitely looks like education and wealth have historically played a major role in lifespans.

I believe the rates run parallel from the advent of the knowledge that you can deep-fry anything.

Just a theory.  No hard data.

That's why the dude who invented General Tso's lived to be 93.

I have spent my life seeking all that's still unsung ...heart

My daughter got a tat on her inner lip last night. If I wasn't so chill, her life expectancy would be 19 years!

What's the tat?

Which kinda lip we talkin' here?

Mouth. I wouldn't want a pic of the other one!

It says "Snasty"

Good book called Blue Zone Solutions. Blue zones are pockets of population where people live measurably longer.

Michael Murray wrote an article a few years ago where he said that if you factor out the drop in infant mortality life expectancy from 1900 to 2000 is virtually unchanged.

What consensus there is on  my little side of the healthcare aisle is that the outside limit of human life expectancy in perfect conditions is about 120 years. That hasn't changed in over 2000 years.

If you examine those medieval scholars Brian refers to, they mimicked behaviors of the Blue Zoners(Or Blue Zoners mimic theirs) in that they lived simple lives, ate unprocessed food which they grew themselves which meant that they were doing physical labor in the fields. They didn't drink a  whole lot of alcohol. They interacted with each other but had limited exposure to the world at large which meant that plagues tended to pass them by.

Ben Franklin lived to be 84 or 85 depending on which DOB you accept. His father lived to be 88.

The first census in the US was taken in 1790 where the population of the 13 colonies was determined to be just under 4 million. The swell in overall numbers will result in a swell in every group within it. The percentage swell seems to favor the aging, i.e. the fastest growing demographic is old people.

This gets complicated quickly, but the reality is that many of us are going to be here at 85 and up and the question of how to prepare for that, both individually and collectively  is on a lot of minds. These Blue Zone ideas have quite a bit of traction.

"Government saves lives. "

Not if you lived in a country run by Stalin, Mao, Castro, or Pol Pot.

What's the common denominator?

Apparently, Abraham lived to be 900 years old, man.

> What's the common denominator?

Stalin, Mao, Castro and Pol Pot are all dead...

(((Blue Zoners)))
