most gd fans have had experiences with "the magic" "the x factor" "the monster" "the gestalt"...or whatever. obviously, drugs are often involved, but dont have to be. IME drugs are an important factor in hearing this effect for the first time, but after that point are no longer required to hear it...almost like learning a language.

this is by far the most hippie woo-woo aspect of the dead, but its an experience im sure most of us have had in one form or another.

logically, there has to be some kind of moment in the bands history where they realized that improvising in specific ways leads to this kind of experience. are there any reliable and/or first hand accounts of the band first becoming aware of this phenomenon?

I'd say it's spring 67' March 67' Winterland show is still pretty much 66' style GD w little hints at where it was headed, check out the jam on the same thing. Then other than the Viola-Alligator from Monterey Pop, which reveals them having recently discovered that approach, we don't have anything until the Aug shows w the Alligator, Viola, New Potato & Lovelight- that new material is set up for that type of improvising that provides that spun out psychedelic effect, seems once they figured that out & began writing songs that could be used as platforms for that approach, they spent a lot of time & energy in 67-68 working on the technical aspects of that enabled them to improve that approach & take it further as far as polyrhythms, multi lead line counterpoint & building & releasing tension. There are interviews w Garcia & Phil that talk about that approach & the work they put into it. Jerry specifically referred to the 11 & having half of the band play in one time & other half in another, the seemingly chaos effect it had, how it would release & the meticulous work that went into learning how to do that
