Looking for some tips...Cabo San Lucas etc

Forums:

Looks like I'm breaking out of quarantine and flying south of the border for New Year's. I have never been to Cabo, so looking for any tips for non-touristy excursions, restaurants, places to surf/rent boards, etc.

Gracias!

Cabo San Lucas is an overrated tourist trap.

If you want something a little different and off the beaten path, check out Cabo Pulmo instead.   Its a little village on the Sea of Cortez about 45 minutes northeast of San Jose where you would fly in.   It has a world class reef right off shore that is classified as UN World Heritage site.   You can snorkle out to the reef easy from the beach.   I have gone diving in a number of places around the world, but I have never seen so many fish as there.   Pepe and his crew also offer diving trips out in the Sea of Cortez to see whale sharks.

The village itself is off the grid and has about 200 people, so make sure you load up on supplies before heading there.   We camped in Pepe's backyard for $5 per night and partied with him and his family and friends.  Great time.

Of course, there is not much surfing in the Sea of Cortez.   For that, I would head north on the Pacific side to around the Todos Santos area.

Thanks Ken. Cabo Pulmo is exactly what we're looking for...thx.

Um....Don't drink the water?

Actually, the Baja has artesian springs, and has some of the most drinkable water in Mexico.

Be safe my friends went a few months ago and all got Covid

Never been to Baja but look on YouTube for Balandra Beach. Has a reputation as one of Mexico's best. It's near La Paz.

Balandra is pretty sweet and not as Gringo touristy as Cabo San Lucas, but its usually pretty packed with locals.  Home of the famous mushroom rock:

Its outside of La Paz, which is a cool city and capital of BCS.   Last time we were there, we checked out some local drinking holes (it was X-mas time and got approached by a "working girl" in a skimpy Santa outfit) and a lucha libre match and were the only gringos in the house.   But the Covid is running rampant in Mexico right now, so I wouldn't want to spend a lot of time there.

^How many times do you have to lick the mushroom rock to reach orbit? And for good shrooms, head to Oaxaca!
