I was lucky enough to see the stop in Eindhoven on this tour, and the setlist is pretty much the same, except for the ending. We got Dirty Blvd, Sweet Jane, and Vicious instead. I was happy!
Ecstasy was a great album from a great time in my life. I was doing great in my marriage, and was so happy not to be in Lou's shoes. Now... Modern Dance is hard to listen to. ... The venue was a sweet small theater at one end of a mall. It was surreal to walk through the mall and then one of the "shops" is an entrance to the Muziekcentrum Frits Phillips, with advertisements for Lou fucking Reed. People just walked by on their way to the shop of their choice. Life strolled past. And there was Lou! And I had a ticket! Manon was there as well, and we walked in early, dropped off our coats, bought beers, and stepped right up to the stage. It was low enough that I could write notes on it, but I had to lift my arm up a bit. I didn't get to take many notes anyway, because Lou walked up and told me to to get my cup off the stage, and what are you writing? Do it elsewhere. And so I looked up at him and he was right there, and he looked serious, so I finished what I was writing, put the notebook in my back pocket, and, grabbing my cup, I looked up again, and he said thanks, and turned to do what he had to do. Weird.
I actually had a similar experience with Lou at Joe's Cafe in Manhattan. Manon was very pregnant and the place was packed. I had called ahead earlier to ask if they could accommodate her, and when we got there, they had put us at the table right under the mic. It was amazing. This was for Howl's Fiftieth anniversary celebration, and Lou read Howl for us. Sweeeeet. When he got the really gay stuff, he got uncomfortable, and skipped over some stanzas. It was pretty funny. Laurie was supposed to be there, but she was a no-show. Anyway, Lou got up there, looked down at Manon and said, you comfy honey? Can we start? And she nodded, and he started. We enjoyed that too.
Ya know, E, that bass is mad fat. They came up with a new amp or something for it. It was wild live, vibrated throughout my body, lifted me to my toes like sonic youth might do. I loved it. They didn't play Possum, which features that effect to it's full, but I didn't mind: it's a long drone, really, from what I remember.
i'll get back to u after I'm able to really spend some time with it.
I'm interested to see how it compares to the Berlin 06' video that I'm a big fan of, or the one with Metallica circa 2011 that's kinda weird and cheesy but still fairly interesting.
>>>>that bass is mad fat.
One of things the caught my attention off the bat is it appears he's using a modulus, such a reminder of just how ubiquitous those basses were during the late 90's and early 2000's when you'd see them everywhere from jambands to dethmetal
dropped off my brother at JFK one summer night, 1987? he was flying back to CO., his gf went for the ride, we were just approaching the Lincoln tunnel or we just drive home to Ct, the radio was on it was about 6pm,traffic towards Ct was horrendous Think it was wnew, guy on the radio said the box office just released some tickets for Lou , I think it was the bottom Line, I turned to my Brothers Gf , asked you like Lou ? fuck yeah, er um Amazing Time... smoke filled Bar Amazing Show... Kind of hooked up with my brothers Gf, They were not so attatched.. I told him like 3 years ago Keep making memories
I'm aware of his history and how far back he goes, and like most of us I loved his "Rock 'n Roll Animal" album, but I only saw him live a couple of times, once at a Bridge Benefit show at Shoreline, the other with Metallica at the Fillmore. Both were great in their own way, but damn that sit-in with Metallica fucking rocked, and I really got his edge that night.
Again, Lou Reed = gravitas.
Nowadays when I think about Lou Reed I mostly think about the day he died, and the tribute My Morning Jacket, Neil Young, Elvis Costello & others did for him, again at a Bridge Benefit concert.
This was one of the greatest performances I ever saw at a Bridge show, and I saw them all...

Man, there's just something
Man, there's just something about Lou Reed.
It's that thing that's hard to explain.
Gravitas.
