Gary Rossington had emergency heart surgery last month and is on the sidelines, leaving no members left from the classic Lynyrd Skynyrd line-up. The band has hired guitarist Damon Johnson, most recently playing with Thin Lizzy, to replace Gary. Guitarist Ricky Medlocke, who played drums in very early incarnations of Lynyrd Skynyrd before going off to form Blackfoot, is now out as he is dealing with COVID symptoms, causing the band to cancel all of their upcoming shows.

I don't know about that, Ken.
I don't know about that, Ken. Sure, the classic era was done, but the rest of them made some pretty decent new music when they put the band back together in the late 80's. Losing Ronnie and Steve and Cassie Gaines was brutal, but they soldiered on. I saw them at the Eureka Municipal Racetrack in the Summer of '99 before I moved out of Humboldt County. They had Gary Rossington, Ed King and Ricky Medlocke on guitars, Leon Wilkeson on bass and Billy Powell on keyboards, and put on a tight show that kicked some serious tail.

Met him at the Oakdale not all that long ago last time Skynyrd played there, a real cool humble man, smiled the whole time.

Some good news -
LYNYRD SKYNYRD guitarist Rickey Medlocke will rejoin his bandmates on stage later today (Sunday, August 22) the Barefoot Country Music Festival in Wildwood, New Jersey. It will mark the 71-year-old's first appearance with the band since he announced earlier in the month that he had tested positive for COVID-19.
In a video message posted on Thursday, Medlocke said that he had recovered from the illness and vowed to perform with the rest of LYNYRD SKYNYRD this weekend.
"Here I am, rounded the corner," he said. "I'm back, feeling good. And you know what? I feel very blessed and very fortunate to be sitting here today."
Rickey went on to thank his fans and the medical team who helped him recover.
"I'm going to kick out the footlights this weekend in New Jersey," he said. "Really be safe and take care of yourself 'cause it's not fun."
LYNYRD SKYNYRD canceled four of its shows after Rickey tested positive for COVID-19.
News of Medlocke's COVID-19 diagnosis came just two weeks after fellow LYNYRD SKYNYRD guitarist Gary Rossington underwent an emergency heart procedure.
Medlocke was the original drummer in LYNYRD SKYNYRD and rejoined the band in 1996 as a lead guitarist and primary songwriter.

I live the kinda life most
Viva, Rickey!
I live the kinda life most men only dream of
I make my livin' writin' songs and singin' them
But I'm forty-one years old
And I ain't got no place to go when it's over
And I'll hide my age and make the stage and
And try to kick the footlights out again
I throw my old guitar across the stage
And then my baseman takes the ball
And the crowd goes nearly wild
To see my guitar nearly fall
After twenty years of pickin'
We're still alive and kickin' down the wall
Tonight we'll kick the footlights out
And walk away without a curtain call
Tonight I'll kick the footlights out again
And try to hide the mood I'm really in
And put on our old Instamatic grin
Tonight I'll kick the footlights out again
I live the kinda life most men only dream of
I make my livin' writin' songs and singin' them
But I'm fortysome years old
And I ain't got no place to go when it's over
So I'll hide my age and make the stage
And try to kick the footlights out again
