I actually made it to a show tonight. These days that's pretty cool for me.

Here's what I saw...

There were maybe 15 of us in the litttle bookstore. It was far out.

Support local music.

Support GOOD music.

lance this reminds me of a time awhile back where i tried to take a few of my friends to a quartet performance at duende with amendola and manring, i dosed all my friends, but i got the date wrong and it ended up being a *super* boring, very slow, very straight jazz quartet, we were tripping balls and everyone hated it, and then i had to go see amendola/manring the next day by myself lol

And how was that Manring/Amendola show?

I remember running into you outside Duende one night. That short-lived place was never a favorite of mine, but they did put on some some really outside acts.

I truly love Bird & Beckett Books. The place is as grassroots as it gets, in one of the coolest neighborhoods in San Francisco. I don't get out as much as I used to, but I try to get there as often as I can.

I take comfort knowing you're still out there supporting the weird. Keep that up.

And how was that Manring/Amendola show?

it was very good but ultimately was held back a bit by being a double bass/double drum quartet. of course a bass player like manring can hold down some real melody but i was still missing some kind of guitar/keys/horns or something. a little wil blades would have been welcome, but thats the nature of experimental music - they experiment! cant really complain. i liked the food at duende and liked the "dingy attic above a restaurant" vibe but the room did leave a little something to be desired. it felt a bit like a more chic and polished, bay area coded version of the stone with worse sound. ill keep bird and beckett in mind for the future - the bookstore setting seems pretty nice. looking at the calendar seems like ill need to do some googling to find out who is weird and who's not.

this is AI generated music im almost positive

^i couldn't find anything definitely saying it was. Imagery was mentioned, but not tne music.

distrokid, mentioned in the vid description, is notorious for distributing ai gen music and i cant find any info on google or the "artists" social media pages referencing a real human, their whole ig page is just a series of ai gen images. they'll rarely just come out and say its ai gen music, its usually done on the sly. i get recs on youtube for ai gen music all the time, almost every single vid of music i play has one or two in the recommended section these days. be careful out there folks

Alright daylight, keeping it moving. If you had a Sirius channel I'd listen. You should get on that.

As for the Bird & Beckett, unlike other independent SF venues like The Lab, The Center For New Music or various other small BA spots, the VERY independent B&B doesn't specifically book seriously "outside" groups, they focus mainly on local SF/BA musicians, but it's such a deeply cool little place it almost doesn't matter who is playing.

The Bird & Beckett isn't really a music venue, it's a musty little neighborhood bookstore, owned by an old hippy who just moves some shelves and puts on jazz and spoken word shows every weekend. I just love how old-school San Francisco/how REAL it is, and how more than occasionally they present seriously good music.

That Amendola/Manring group you saw at Duende does sound a bit two dimensional, but also like just another odd Bay Area one-off. Lately Amendola has been playing occasionally in a trio with Michael Manring (who for those who don't know is a brilliant bass player) and Karl Evangelista, an amazing guitar player. I've seen them a couple of times in the past year or two and have been melted both times.

If you're not familiar with Evangelista, he's a Bay Area local who has serious big league guitar chops but who chooses to be WAY out there. He's another like Nels Cline or even Jimmy Herring, who could easily fit into a mainstream rock band to pay the bills (nothing wrong with that, especially after a certain age) but who's real focus is the seriously weird.

Despite popular opinion, there is still lots of quality weird out there, and remember what the maestro says...

KEEP IT WEIRD!!!!!
