(Santana posted this pic on FB today)

It was 50 years ago today, May 27th, 1971, that John, Alan White and Klaus Voormann* recorded 'Imagine' at Ascot Sound Studios. The strings would be overdubbed at Record Plant in New York City on July 4th, 1971.

*Nicky Hopkins played on earlier attempts of the track, but not the master. John double-tracked his original piano part and left Nicky on the sidelines.

Facebook post today;

Owsley Stanley Foundation

Grateful Dead, July 16, 1970, Euphoria Ballroom (Litchfield), San Rafael, CA: When Starfinder’s mother-in-law, Theresa Rothaus, quietly reached out to sponsor the priority preservation of a special reel as a surprise for Starfinder’s 50th birthday, we could think of none more special and personal to us than this one. We believe this was Bear’s final night mixing sound for the Dead before going to prison for two years. Even more significant, it was perhaps the last time he saw Janis Joplin in person, whom he adored (as did everyone who ever got to know her). Janis and Pigpen sang “Turn on Your Lovelight” to close the show, and they absolutely brought the house down. You know you’re in for trip when Janis leaps right in with, “You know what this is about, man? It’s about gettin’ it on!” For another 18 minutes, they sure got it on all right!

We know tapes of this show circulate widely and that many have heard this performance, but to finally preserve the original recording of this magical night was pretty important to us.

Thank you, Theresa. What a wonderful, inspired, and meaningful 50th birthday present!

Before “Lovelight,” the reel also contains “China Cat Sunflower>I know You Rider” and “Candyman.”

Lineage: AT822 > Tascam DR-2d (16/44.1) > Soundforge (Levels, fades) > CDWave > TLH (Flacs, Checksums)

Notes: My tiny stealth rig this time, but it sounded REALLY good in front of Timmy's soundboard booth, and the AT822 did a remarkable job capturing the details of the mix. Band played superlatively, just like last year at this venue, they love those redwoods.. I was late getting back to start the second set, and missed two or three minutes of warm-up jamming before Hand Jive, but made it with ten seconds to spare before the song itself started. Plenty of wind noise in this recording, and some crowd chatter, might as well put on the headphones and pretend you're there - I think this mix sounds better that way...

Enjoy! - Peter T
