Apparently the dude in the article who got repeatedly stalked and eventually mauled, did not bring a firearm or bear mace.  A friend of mine is being flown in to a remote Alaskan area this week for a 3 week camping trip and does not intend to bring any deterrents saying that the odds are very low that he will die from a bear attack.  Fuck. That.  At least have a couple large canisters of bear mace on hand to give yourself a skunking chance.
