Mayer on playing Jerry, etc.

Forums:

This guy.

I've not liked this guy at all over quite a few years, and it's easy enough to take more shots, but damn.

He's a pop diva who seems to have gotten "the bug".

He's a dead head.

He gets it.

He is what he is, and he can always be annoying, but he seems to have gotten it.

I think he's OK.

All it can do is carry on.

I agree. I didn't like the guy until that infamous late late show interview and jam session. John Mayer admitted he came to the music (GD) at time when he was searching for inspiration in music. He also admitted to listening to two hours of Grateful Dead a day almost like sports radio. So he's clearly into the music.

We were all different people before we stepped on this bus. Plus he played "Althea" on the show which is one of my top 5 grateful dead songs. They also jammed for awhile until the sound crew unplugged them from what I read.

Dead & Company show's at Bill Graham 12/27/15 sold me on Mayer. I was monitoring the 2015 east coast tour and it was slow and rusty. But the month off before the San Francisco & LA shows worked they were better and it showed.

Last summer in Wheatland (surface of sun) & Shoreline was a blast and looking forward to it this summer as well maybe LA too.

No. I do not like Pepsi. I will go out of my way not to drink it.

I keep trying with an open mind but just can't get there.  He sounds like a pompous ass know it all in that Facebook video...he's been a "deadhead" for what, 6 years?

He is a pompous ass. That doesn't mean that he doesn't get it. Personally, I think that he's somewhat humbled by the music and the crowds.

i'm not going to miss work to see him with DeadCo, but I respect what he does and his reverence towards the music.

I could give or take Mayer, but i do like what it's done for Bobby

He is a decent fit for DeadCo but other than that I go out of my way to not pay any attention to him....especially when he is lecturing via YouTube on which guitar Jerry played or how he played it.

Out in 'real-life' he seems like an arrogant prick.

It's nice that he "gets it".

Doesn't mean I enjoy listening to him play.

Who hasn't gotten it?

He plays the material with more passion and understanding of them music than most other guitarists in that slot post-Jerry.

He is a wanna be deadhead and terrible at that.

Fucking poseur.  He blows.

He's no Justin Bieber, but close.

Has Mayer passed the Acid Test? He can play, no doubt, but his approach to the music seems limited in ways. In the video, Mayer says "There's not a second that goes by that I'm not thinking 'Is this alright, Jerry? Is this cool?'" This is quite different from the approach to GD music described by Phil:

"The major factor with the Grateful Dead doing what they did and what we’re trying to do still is the Group Mind. Where nobody’s really there, there’s only the music. It’s not as if we’re playing the music… the music is playing us. And that requires a certain amount of ego loss for everyone, so that, onstage, in the moment and in the music, there’s no leader. There aren’t even any musicians, ideally."

Mayer's a fan who can play, for sure, but until he finds a way to bust out of himself, his playing will always sound limited to my ears.

At least Mayer doesn't tease ABB/Little Feat/Traffic in every song.

God bless everyone who is digging the music, no judgment on any of you.  Granted I have only heard maybe 7 songs or something and I have a good friend who I've seen tons of shows with who loves it, but for me, it's like something that makes GD music sound like a commercial.  It takes this music I care about and makes it lame.  And that, for me, is a pretty bad thing.

It's not terrible or technically flawed (cept for the drummers) but in my brain, it's worse than boring.

What slacker said

Less objectionable than JK.

When felinia and I line up on something so squarely - it makes me go hmm.

makes me throw up in my mouth a little, But that's just me I don't care if you like it..................... I wish I did!!!

>>>>>At least Mayer doesn't tease ABB/Little Feat/Traffic in every song.

He's still learning the GD material.  Give him time.

Dudes got soul. You can see it on his face.

> "There's not a second that goes by that I'm not thinking 'Is this alright, Jerry? Is this cool?'"<

lols.

I preface this by saying who am I to rain on someone else's parade.

Though I've never seen Dead & Co live, I have listened some.

IMHO Dead & Co music seems soulless.

Which may not be Mayer's fault.

I'm all in favor of letting musicians make a living.

There are people getting joy out of Co, which is a good thing.

No.

Spot.

Taken.

I don't mind this guy.
Mostly because the band seems to work pretty well.

What I do take issue with is how all of a sudden it's like $100 more per ticket than it was in '16 (at least it is for a reserved seat at the Dump).
This is extortion.

I agree Lance. JM loves the music and devotes hours and hours to listening and practicing. Really is a Dead head, very talented but more importantly seriously creative and Not a Jerry clone. He turns the tunes upside down and inside out  and adds lengthy extended jams on most every one. I am a fan. Hoping to see Dead Co live one day.

Would love to see JM as a Phriend during the Birthday run.
