Metallica inspired by the Grateful Dead

Well, Lars certainly has an interesting understanding of the Grateful Dead's "Once we're done with it, they can have it" distribution model.

Didn't Metallica file suit to the tune of $100,000 per illegal download, and get like 300,000 people banned from a file sharing network?

I'd bet good money he hasn't even read Halligan's book.

It was copyrighted material.  Can you really blame them for that? Don't think they were ever looking to collect, just shut down a system that was fucking artists.

Last time I saw Metallica you got the cd the tour was supporting and a download of the show for a reasonably priced ticket. Sure Lars can come off as a pompous asshole at times but as a band they're pretty good to their fans and are in it for the right reasons.

I'm a fan, man. I'm also saying that across decades, their business moves look literally nothing like the Grateful Dead's. To me. Probably more opposite than similar.

Everyone wants independence and financial freedom.

The Grateful Dead pioneered their own label when the band was in its first real commercial growth period, as a way to exert more control over the product.

Metallica began their own label thirty-odd years into their career, after all their "good" music has been made, so they could control more of the money.

I'm certain Metallica are much better businessmen

Who wasn't ?

I always heard that Kirk Hammett was a Deadhead, but never read any interview where he confirmed it.   It is known that he used to pal around with Les Claypool growing up in the Bay Area and its likely the hit a few shows together.

Saw them at the Roseland Ballroom in 1983.  Would have preferred to see the GD early in their career as a band.
