Michael Tilson Thomas, a leading American conductor for a half-century who headed orchestras in Buffalo, Miami, London and San Francisco while also composing, died Wednesday. He was 81.

From Wiki....Tilson Thomas was also known as a premier interpreter of the works of Steve Reich. 

The godfather of minimalist music. 

The GD did a show with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in Mrach1970, Tilson became their musical director in 1971.
