Molly Tuttle

Forums:

Saw Molly Tuttle and the Golden Highway last night. Never seen her before and was most impressed.  Amazing guitar player with a talented band of young colorful players.   Only complaint was that they would sometimes work up a song and just when they seemed ready to kick into even higher gear and jam out, they would stop.   They got more jammy as the set progressed and a couple of the later songs evolved into full blown psychedelic jamgrass (but not using as much distortion or effects as Billy Strings):

They were opening for Infamous Stringdusters but both bands got equal time and then they did a couple numbers with everyone on stage.

Molly kicks ass 'til BOTH shoes are shitty! LOVE her. Her fiddle player is amazing also. Damn Ken, what a great combo show. Glad you got to go.

I saw her last year at the Aladdin in Portland, Ken.  She blew everyone away at that show.

Remind me to tell you the story about a less than kind experience w/ her opening act, Christina Vane.

Smoothest picking hand in the business

I saw her a few weeks ago at Grassroots, was decent

She's fantastic, she and her band are going places for sure. I get tired of her singing after a while, her voice lacks any grit, but she uses it pretty good and she's got a solid repertoire of her own songs. The real "meat" is in her playing, Definitely a show worth seeing any time they come around.

Yes i agree with that, her voice does nothing for me but her playing is great

She already has accomplished quite a bit.

First award I can remember was in 2012 where she won the Chris Austin Songwriting Competition at the Merlefest Music Festival.

Ken. From the looks of the critter in the left of the photo I assume they were playing White Rabbit?

You assume correctly. That was a fun number.

Some folks at the shows are wearing rabbit ears now.

I love her but I see her band as something of a boutique experience that's more enjoyable a couple times a year instead of every time she tours nearby. She's an incredible flatpicker, and I like her vocals, although there is a Minnie Mouse burnout factor (Alision Krause is great but I tire of the high pitch after a set). I guess I'm just not crazy about the originals and as someone else mentioned they stop short of opening things up to explore. I don't want to be a jamband only person, I really enjoy solid bluegrass where she is excellent, but the originals aren't it for me. I love Sierra Ferrell who doesn't do jams, but her music is interesting enough to hold it's own without it. I can't really say the same for Molly Tulle's band, but I hope she is successful so I can still go see her play once in awhile as a treat.
