Inside the FBI's File on The Fugs: The "Most Vulgar Thing the Human Mind Could Possibly Conceive"

Formed in New York City in late 1964 by the poets Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg, with Ken Weaver on drums, they soon were joined by Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber of the Holy Modal Rounders. Kupferberg named the band from a euphemism for fuck used in Norman Mailer's novel The Naked and the Dead.

Aside from derision for their "scatological" lyrics, the Fugs have also been labeled "avant-rock."

The Fugs.

Lol.

Fuggit.

Fug'n A!   I was actually considering at a Fugs poster the other day. Thanks for link.

Who could forget these classics:

CIA Man

Coca Cola Douche

New Amphetamine Shriek

First heard in 10th grade, played for me by our drummer.  Also introduced me to the Mothers.

What were you considering while you were at that poster?

I'll always remember Saran Wrap

I was turned onto the Fugs in 1977 by a friend and neighbor with 2 older brothers who loved Frank Zappa (and other bands that parodied the Status Quo.)

My very favorite LP by the Fugs is the epic - "Golden Filth - the Fugs Live at the Fillmore East," which is both musically competent and hilariously irreverent!

As a kid in NYC I would frequently run into Tuli selling pamphlets, poetry and books on the sidewalk outside the Back Fence on Bleaker Street!

When I moved to Portland, OR in the late 80's I hung out a bit with Steve Weber who was a truly deranged human with a serious junk habit.
He was usually whacked at his occasional gigs at a Burnside venue known as "VERN," due the the TA having burned out  of the Neon Sign above the door.

I once saw them at a Fugs Reunion show at the Bottom Line sometime in the mid 80's and they mentioned that one of their last live shows was opening for the GD at the Stanley Theater in 1969!
