Musicians who rip off their parents' music to make money.

Bring it.

5. Wolfgang Van Halen

6. Nas

7. Jason Bonham

8. Norah Jones

9. Zane Kesey should count somehow

10. Any Marley except maybe Ziggy

12. Frank Sinatra Jr.

Norah Jones is an angel; the badger's a troll.

But so is Bob. Hey, man.

Julian Lennon would have been the first listed, once.

What about folks who probably broke into the business on their parents' coat tails but then made their mark in their own right?

Hank II?

Zak Starkey?

>>>>Julian Lennon would have been the first listed, once.

and you give me shit about Norah Jones. This fucking place.

Graham's band doesn't play Grateful Dead songs.

Thank goodness

Norah Jones doesn't perform any of her father's repertoire, or any Indian Classical Music at all.  She is a Western Jazz and Pop Vocalist.  Her half-sister Anoushka Shankar, does perform Classical Indian music on the sitar, but she is seriously talented.  A lot of traditional music is handed down in families, for example, the Watson's (Doc & Merle), the Carter Family, and The Staples Singers (Pops and Mavis).

Jason Bonham has also carved out his own career outside of being a Led Zeppelin cover act.

Dhani Harrison and Sean Lennon are both creating new music.

I always figured that Ray Davies and Chrissie Hynde's daughter would be a musician, but she's an environmental and animal rights activist.  Same goes for Frances Bean Cobain.

Ivan Neville and Ian Neville are serving their family legacy well in Dumpstafunk.

What's much worse than Dweezil Zappa, who has done a great job of preserving Frank's music, are the actions of his siblings Ahmet and Diva, who have a fraction of Dweezil's musical ability and are just making money by managing the Zappa Trust and trying to charge their own brother for playing their Dad's music.

Ahmet is a very sharp businessman I would not believe everything that dweezil cries about

Lol. Buck's sitting on a pebble playing guitar.

Anyone ever listen to Nico Hoon sing with Blind Melon?

She's not the best singer, but her performance of Change brought tears to my eyes.

Natalie Cole....

They have reconciled.

Dweezil Zappa Announces Reconciliation With His Siblings & Zappa Family Trust After Years-Long Feud

Recently, we Zappa siblings (Diva, Ahmet and Dweezil) got together with the goal of resolving our differences. Once we sat down and actually listened to one another, we found a much greater understanding of each other’s intentions. We regret that our communication broke down and that things were misconstrued. It may be a bumpy road at times – we are a passionate Italian family – but we have decided to work toward privately discussing issues rather than using public forums and lawyers.

We are hopeful that if any of our father’s fans have felt conflicted, they can join us in the peace of our resolution. With our best feet forward, we are moving ahead and will faithfully deliver much more of our father’s indefinable brilliance, also known as the “World’s Finest Optional Entertainment.”

Thank you for your passion and love for our father. We can assure you, we all feel the same about him.

I'm not sure all of them "rip off" their parent's music - many of them had the music handed to them.

Johann Sebastian Bach and descendants?

Barry Bonds

Pretty sure most of these parents, if alive, are/would have been proud of what their kids accomplished, be it preserving and disseminating their parents' legacies, or striking out on their own. Most of them were encouraged and aided by their parents as they got their careers going. Without talent it wouldn't happen - coattails will only get you so far.

My friend played (plays?) in the Little Willies with Norah Jones. He actually opened for her on one of her tours as well. Anyhoo, he met her in Austin at a gig when they were both very young. The bands all hung out after the gig on some hill talking and partying. This was when nobody knew who she was, and he was slightly more well known. He said he didn't know her connection to Ravi and she didn't mention it. He described her as another down to earth struggling musician who he could tell was very talented. Years later they reconnected in NYC and started playing together. I like her voice. BUT i'm sure it didn't hurt to have the musical genes and connection.

She didn’t bust out a sitar?

Arlo Guthrie, Amy Helm, Robbie & Ronnie McCoury, and Roseanne Cash are all more examples of musicians who have staked out their own musical identities.

I guess Rick Nelson's sons, "Nelson", and Brian Wilson and Michelle Phillips daughters , "Wilson Phillips", did too, but the music they created kind of sucked.

Big Bill Morganfield, the son of McKinley Morganfield, aka "Muddy Waters", has gotten some mileage out of being Muddy's son.  Not sure he would have gotten much exposure without that connection.

A 21 year old Jerry Garcia in 1963 with his first child, Heather, now Heather Garcia Katz, who is first violinist in the Redwood Symphony Orchestra, appeared on the Garcia-Grisman "Not For Kids Only" album and the "Common Chord" album, and who is also an accomplished glass craftsperson, like her step-sister Sunshine Kesey.

Lilly Hiatt is making good music.

Justin Townes Earle was estranged from his father Steve for most of his childhood, but became an accomplished musician, performer and recording artist on his own merits.

Otis Redding's sons tried to make it as R&B act The Reddings in the late 70s-early 80s, but never really had any impact.

The O'Jays' Eddie Levert, Sr.'s sons Sean and Eddie Jr. have had decent R&B careers.

Nancy Sinatra had a great run in the 60's when she was working with Lee Hazlewood.

Truer words have have never been posted.

Jordan Zevon.  Though I’m not sure how much money he really makes off it.

Even with Berry Gordy as his father, Rockwell turned out to be just a one hit wonder with his song "I always feel like somebody's watching me" and that was only because Michael Jackson was on the record.

>Graham's band doesn't play Grateful Dead songs.

FFS how many times has he stood onstage and played Dead songs with his daddy at his daddy's club (vast majority of those songs his daddy didn't even write of course)?

Graham is literally the worst of all of these. He HAS to have a band that doesn't play Dead songs so anyone will take him remotely seriously as a musician, which it's a bit too late for that

poor grahme...

With music, it's never too late.  Inspiration, lead me brightly, and whatnot.

Yeah, ffs.

Oh, and I had forgotten about Nelson and Wilson Philips, now thank you very much. This is a bad thread.

LeBron James Jr.

Nas didn't rip off anything Bucky.

Shana Morrison (Van's daughter)

Shandon Sahm (Doug Sahm's son) Meat Puppets

Neither had their parent's music handed to them, but I doubt having decent connections your new artist would kill for ever hurt.

1. Jerry Garcia

So Phil spent all that money on princeton and stanford but he doesnt want them to use their degrees?  Personal choice i guess.  They probably wont need to work a traditional job anyway.  Maybe they are, and I need to just hit the googles. just a thought

It’s a hideous thread.

Ripping Phil’s kid.

No Class

Yeah, but that's not why it's a bad thread.

They made me remember....

Graham Lesh, lol. Dude is a hack.

I’d rather see Phil with Ghrame than Jackie Greene

The thread title makes no sense

Sorry for the PTSD, Floops.

Great call on Shandon Sahm, Miss Willers.  I checked the Meat Puppets Wikipedia page because I always thought his name was Shannon, but you had it right.   What I didn't know was this:

>>>>>

On July 8th, 2018, it was confirmed that Bostrom had replaced Sahm as the drummer for the band, and that keyboardist Ron Stabinsky had joined, as well.[29]

<<<<<

Holy moly, the original Meat Puppets are back!

I'd love to see that.

And no prob, Dave, I have meficine for that.

>>The thread title makes no sense

Well, check the OP and you'll understand why.

<<<<>>>>Ripping Phil’s kid.

how so? dude puts himself out there, tours the country, is an entertainer (although terrible at it).

Graham Lesh, lol. Dude is a hack. <<<<

^^ THIS !

‘Sour Grapes’

Every parent wants to leave their child a legacy, business, or at least a solid foundation for financial success no ? Why should family members sit by and watch other people cash in ?

Graham loves music and wants to follow in his father's footsteps what could make a father more proud Every father wants an activity they can enjoy with their son.. Give me one good reason a 70 something cancer survivor shouldn't spend his time touring and performing with his son.. If you can come up with one that says more about you than Graham or Phil or Dweizel..

Simple solution for the zappa's if it has Frank's picture, quote, or anything else on it some money should go to the trust . If it's dweizel's picture or original work than not

On the surface it sounds like the family was being greedy but one visit to the merch shop and Frank's mug was on everything
