My first skull

Forums:

I've never carved a stone skull before but I recently acquired a 6" x 7" x 10" piece of limestone and needed to carve something on the commercial side to sell at a summer craft show.

I'd do a Dead motif, but if it came out good I'd either keep it myself or gift it, and that's not really the point of this project. T'm trying to work fast. This piece took a week of afternoons. Which is really fast.

Last Saturday it looked like this:

So the first step was turning the block into more of a cylinder, which turned into more of an egg shape.

I decided to include a carved base into the piece -- maybe I'll paint it for contrast eventually.

I had to learn some basic anatomy once I started the face. I could have probably gotten a cadaver to study from downtown Baltimore, but stuck to pictures on the Internet.

Now I've seen seven bazillion images of skulls in my life, but it's harder than it looks to do one in 3D. I went to Micheal's to buy a plastic model, but they didn't have one. So I took it slow.

It's all about the lower jaw.

I saved the nose for last - or lack of a nose,. But the "nose bone" is the frontmost piece along with the chin. Doing that was tricky.

Still a work in progress. This was yesterday:

Today it's even better - I started sanding....  I'm still contimplating an inlay.  It has the rom for a lightning bolt, but that might just look like an axe injury to a non-Deadhead.

To be continued:

I love process. Thanks.

And I love carving (not stone). You're making a beautiful thing.

Cool.  Thanks for sharing.

Or you could always go for the actual axe in the head. smiley

Nice, Alan, especially for the first time. Thanks for sharing.

And it's good to know this is about original art and not a zoner who spontaneously went sideways and is now collecting fresh craniums > (thread of the year, though, most likely)

Careful, Eugene!

That's cool, nice work!

Always fun watching your talent materialize Alan. Thanks.

Thanks all and hope your holiday weekend was fun.

I worked on the teeth and nose more. It's looking even better, even though there's a little more space between the teeth now than I initially had. And I sanded the head with 2000 grit. It's starting to feel as smooth as a bowling ball. Feels great. I can't wait to wax it.

But first I have to decide what to do with the base. I was thinking of dremel engraving, rather than carving, some roses on the sides, but flower images are hard to distinguish in such a small space. Especially roses. I might have to stick with geometric patterns or skip it completely.

I'll take some more photos tomorrow.

getting there....

starting to work on the base -- I think I'll lay down some bronze first and see how it looks

not too bad... that gives me the skull-on-a-platter look. Still needs some work -- some black stencils or something.

On to waxing.

after all these years, it turns out you ARE your name

this is fantastic !!!
