My Live Music Spot

Seen so many shows here, from punk to rock. Every time a national act is on stage they comment that this is the coolest outdoor venue on the east coast. It is 4 minute drive from the house.

Sunsqubi tonight for $20 and $4 service fees.

Where is your local spot?

Closest thing to my spot. Municipal Auditorium.  Home of The Louisiana  Hayride.  Elvis and many others had their start here . Just a fantastic building.

Acoustics are phenomenal.

Very interesting history if you have a minute. Statues of Elvis and James Burton out front.  Burton is a homie and I have been fortunate to have a few conversations with in the past.

Eugene is rich in good live music places. All of them are within a mile or so of each other and easy to be at. McDonald Theater, WOW Hall, Hult Center, Whirled Pies, The Shedd, Cuthbert Amphitheatre, and maybe another place I'm forgetting. Easy to get to, parking is easy, friendly.

Revolution Hall is probably my favorite indoor venue in Portland.  It's a converted high school auditorium.  Great sound, friendly staff, and cheap beer..  My only gripe is that they have taken out most of the seating except for the balcony, which they keep closed if the show is undersold.   We saw a show there on Monday night (the old post-hardcore band Quicksand) and got their early enough to grab a couple of the few seats left in place on the lower level.

For outdoor venues, Hornings Hideout was the best, but they stopped doing music there last year.   Edgefield is an ok outdoor venue, but getting in and out of the parking lot is a royal pain in the ass unless you are lucky and manage to secure a spot close to the exit. Otherwise, just pull up a chair, crack a beer, and be prepared to wait for the traffic to clear.   Now if you can manage to get a room at the Edgefield, it is one of the best concert experiences imaginable.  We stayed up there two nights for my partner's birthday this year.  Trombone Shorty played the first night and SCI the second.  Get up, go to pool, get lunch, take a nap, see a movie at the little theater, walk to the show, hit the pool again, repeat.

I really miss TXR.

we are in a bit of a live music desert within one hour of here

Most of the local shows I see anymore take place at the LA Greek, which is a nice venue that holds about 6,000 people in Griffith Park in LA, but my favorite local venue is the LIbbey Bowl in Ojai. This has quickly become my all-time favorite outdoor venue. It's set in a cool little park in the middle of the small town of Ojai, which is about 15 miles north of Ventura, and it's probably the most chill place for a show I've ever been to. The venue has about 800 seats with a small lawn at the back that holds a couple hundred more people, parking is free and abundant, and you're free to leave the ticketed area and return, so you can head out to your car for a snack and a beverage at set break if you'd like. In short, it's the kindest outdoor venue I've ever been to.

When I lived down south, I always liked the John Anson Ford Theater.

I haven't been to the Ford yet, Mark, but I've heard nothing but good things about it, even though it's set right in Hollywood just across the freeway from the Bowl. I was hoping to check out one of the solo Neil Young shows there earlier this year, but the tickets were way too pricey, so I caught him at the LA Greek instead.

R.I.P. Applegate Lodge

The Falcon in Marlborough NY. The owner Tony Falco passed away during covid, his son picked up the reigns and is carrying on quite well. They present a great mix of different types of music.

Basically you have dinner there and put money in collection box in the back for the band. There's no tickets, you just make a reservation. I've seen some very good bands there.
