Name a next generation drummer to enjoy.

Forums:

We were watching P&F with Molo and the question arose: Who are the new drummers to look for?

We know the old ones, who's next?

Josh Freese (although at age 50, he's no spring chicken).  Saw him play with Devo about ten years ago, and was won over.

Gonna see Stanton Moore tomorrow night.

As always there are lots of really great drummers, either young or not particularly well known.

I just recently was exposed to a band called Tatran from Israel, and their drummer, Dan Mayo, is fucking great.

Even in the couple of years before COVID I wasn't seeing nearly as much music as I used to, especially groups I'm not familiar with, so it's mostly jazz drummers who I haven't heard of that I'm learning about.

In that vein Kendrick Scott is great, and Tommy Igoe is a favorite. He's not young but isn't that well known, he mostly plays around the Bay Area now, but he's a Buddy Rich type player and he rips.

As for rock drummers, he's not up & coming or particularly young, but I really love Patrick Hallahan, the drummer in My Morning Jacket. He doesn't over-play, he doesn't dazzle with technique, he's just thick and always RIGHT IN the pocket.

Cool. I appreciate the tips. We were just listening to Vegoose 05 Phil with Jeff Sipe. Guy can count.

Hey all - thanks again - I just watched those links. Looking forward to chasing down some more of their work.

If we're talking about different types of drummers who have or should play with Phil, I should have also mentioned Scott Amendola, another player who isn't young or "next generation" but who most aren't aware of, and who ALWAYS plays "outside" the norm.

He's a unique drummer, another who's mostly based in the Bay Area. He plays a WIDE variety of strange modern jazz with lots of different groups & great players including Nels Cline, Skerik, Jeff Parker, Charlie Hunter, etc. But he also played some fine shows with Phil Lesh the last couple of years of TxR. He really brought a different, gentler yet excellent hopping groove to the music.

Here's a clip from a great Phil show with Amendola in the Grate Room a couple of years ago...

This is more along the lines of what you'll find Scott doing most of the time...

He's going to be in Seattle & Portland in late March playing a couple of nights with a really trippy group called Trees Moving Air with the brilliant Michael Manring (a GREAT bass player, who's another many may not have heard of).

Anyone who lives in those areas and is willing to risk the plague should definitely check that group out.

I like the kid from Eggy

Alex Bailey

but I'm partial to drummers who sing:

Festivals turned me on to lots of good younger musicians, but with The Vibes no more and covid fuckin with us,  I got nuthin

I'm out of the young bands loop these days. All my boys got mileage.

>>>>Gonna see Stanton Moore tomorrow night.

Nice.  Hope the show was good.  Seen him many times with Galactic but never with his solo band.   Wouldn't call him "next generation" though.

Saw a band called "Magic Beans" last night opening for the Motet.   Really young guys just starting to cut their teeth, but the raw material was there.

No one has named Joe Russo?!

If you want to follow some really young drummers.....

The next generation belongs to the ladies.

Sarah Thawler will destroy all challengers.

^^^^ Yes, good one!  Looks like she could use a new cymbal, unless that's intentional...

Rodney Holmes has a cool style, like his playing

Wow here's another Sarah Thawer performance, love this one as she's with an ensemble:

Nikki Glaspie is 40, and another super-talented female drummer.

Great thread!

Stu Allen has had a number of fine young(er) drummers play in his revolving Mars Hotel lineups over the last 10+ years.  A standout for me is Ezra Lipp.  Strong chops, and very jazzy on GD material.  And on the more 4-4 Jerry Band stuff, he couldn't help but throw in some flourishes that had Stu raising his eyebrows.

Ezra sings a bit, but my nod for "drummers who sing" is Pete Lavezzoli.  He's another Mars Hotel alum, though not as young, and is in fact, quite accomplished in his own right, check out his books.  Does great playing drums and singing Pigpen songs!

And a shout-out to Lance for his mention of Michael Manring:  I'm a big "Manthing" fan!  Thanks for the tip on Trees Moving Air, I'll have to check them out.  The name reminds me of Sadhappy, a band Manring was in consisting of 2 bass players and a drummer.  I thought of them as "moving a lot of air" and saw them play in a bar near Lake Merced in SF, very obscure.

Glad to hear Michael Manring is still performing. Saw him once back in the eighties at the old Rainbow Theater in Denver. Memorable performance.

And here's another drummer, Chris Coleman, who can do about whatever he wants with a drum kit....

Michael Manring - Thonk

Here's the album (out of print, I believe) that contains the song Adhan, linked by Lance, above.  Has some raging fusion, including Manring trading hyperbass riffs with Steve Morse.
