Need Zoner Help Lower Baja

Forums:

I've never been south of Ensenada and would like to checkout the Cabo San Lucas area.  Thinking of going for 4nights or so maybe as soon as first week in March.  I want to snorkel Cabo Pulmo.  But mostly I just want to eat great food, hang out on the beach, drink Margaritas, and maybe participate in a little nightlife.

What I need from experienced Zoners, is any advice ya got. Time of year to visit? Time of year to Snorkel?  Availability of decent snorkel gear?   Where to stay? In Cabo San Lucas? Near Cabo Pulmo?  AIRBNB?    VRBO?  Hotels?  Airports? Is the one in CSL the only one? Car rentals?? Best Beach/Beaches?  Best food? Is there ample bud easily available? Or do I need to bring my own.  Anything else ya got.

Hi Mark!  In the early 70s, I rode in the back seat as my parents thought it would fun to drive to Cabo from Oregon!  (eye roll)

We hung out in Mulege on the east coast of Baja for like a week -- it is a really good spot for a variety of fish due to the currents that meet there. Lots of natural areas to explore there, but the town is very small, like 3K population.

Then we went to La Paz to the south, then Cabo -- and also hit Todos Santos on the west side for amazing sunset beaches nearby.
La Paz seemed like a capitol city, Cabo wasn't even that developed in those years.
At the end we took a ferry from La Paz to Mazatlan then headed north.

Of course I can't recommend any hotels so many years later, but I encourage you to get an SUV and be adventurous!

How's your Spanish?  That might help w/ the bud hunt.

Donde es la mota?

Skip Cabo San. Lucas.  Overcrowded gringo land. Might as well go to Daytona Beach.

Instead, check out Cabo Pulmo over on the Sea of Cortez side about an hour northeast of San Jose.  It's off the beaten track (and the road there is literally beaten).  But it has some of the best snorkeling in the world.  There is reef about 30 yards from the beach that is absolutely amazing in the abundance of fish.  UNESCO natural heritage site.  Fish are so thick that you can barely see five feet through the schools of them.  And you will come across cormorants diving underwater for them.  Really wild.

The town is off the grid and other than a big dive resort, not much tourist infrastructure.  But we camped in Pepe's backyard for $8 usd per head.  Just ask around for Pepe.

Another option is to fly in to Loreto further up the gulf.  Cool town and gateway to some killer beaches to the north and south.   You can camp on the Bahia Conceptcion for $10 usd per night to the north (palaypa included) and just snorkel and fish all day.  Rattlesnake Beach to the south for $5 per day, but more rustic.

^^^^ love these ideas!!!  I remember Loreto!

Thanks pholks.  Good advice.

Ken, see my original post. 3rd sentence was I want to snorkel Cabo Pulmo.  And I don't camp anymore, Looking for a place with AC.  Very few around there.

SWA has non stops from Sac to Cabo SL  So I will fly into there and rent a car.   Llollo, any special reason to get an SUV?

talked to the kiddo re: pulmo.

you may want the SUV. long off road to town she said...like an hour.

she stayed at a AIrBnB but can't remember which one.

there is a scuba store in town, maybe they rent equip. They have their own. They also paid for a boat tour and said was worthwhile.

keep in mind a lot of the time is windy as hell. like you may need to snorkel in the morning, early riser..

i can reach out to my cuz who is about an hr away from there.

also, don't really recommend traveling/flying with herb...I mean you go straight to customs...

do not drive at night. repeat.

you can search this forum for more info, it used to be good but I haven't used it in years https://forums.bajanomad.com/

Early Spring Through Easter Is Awesome Down There ! I Stayed For 6 Weeks In Todos Santos  ! Went Everywhere and Very Nice Surfing.

I recall that you can rent masks, fins, and snorkels down near the beach in Cabo Pulmo (we brought our own).    Water will still be a bit cool in March, so you should probably get a wetsuit as well.    Yeah, the road down there is really rough, but we did it in a small compact car.   Just watch the potholes, go slow, and as mentioned, don't drive at night.  I have never been afraid of crime in Mexico but some of the roads are down right scary.   As for hotels, there is the dive resort and recall seeing what looked like a couple of guest houses, but don't have specifics.  Sorry.

Trip sounds fun.   If you go to Cabo San Lucas, there is no shortage of people selling trinkets on the beach who will also offer you weed and cocaine.  I never took them up of the offer and instead would bring my own (edibles).
