The goddamn Horse, on the road. Tour of the summer.

No Sampedro knocks it down a notch but hey, it's 2024. Intake the blessings as they come.

I'm hitting show's on both tours!!!  Even did a road trip to Syracuse to see Springsteen the past week,  Rock On Kids.....

Coyotte~

Neil and Crazy Horse are also playing the Hollywood Bowl on September 29th.

It looks like Neil added some dates, including Bend on July 25 and The Gorge July 26

Love that Bend venue. That'll be a rocker.

cal coast in SD is a nice venue.

Boise, Salt Lake City, and Denver were also added.

Going to look into getting a NYA subscription so I can get in on the presale.

Definitely interested in the Bend and the Gorge shows.

Giddy-up!

NY&CH Edmonton on 7/21 was cancelled and a second Burnaby show was added on 7/22 a few weeks ago.

Lotta shows for these old timers.   We're hitting both and taking the boys to the stones.  I couldn't convince them to do Neil too.   They are just learning that their dad's music is alright.   Older one got let out of class early yesterday because he knew Franklins Tower and the teacher is a huge deadhead.

$$$$ Give a hippie some money he said once.

$100 to $200 lawn.

Going to go to the Dana Point show in September. Neil by the beach.

I have tickets for the Stones in Vegas but don't have a plane ticket yet---can't seem to pull the trigger.

Decisions, decisions....

I'm still waiting for the Bay Area to be announced, otherwise it will have to be Hollywood Bowl, Bend, Denver or Boise......all bought on the aftermarket of Neil blows us off - which has has done before.

Cortez played with the missing verse from 1975 added to the end
Tour:
2024 Love Earth Tour
Band:
Crazy Horse, Lineup 12

Neil Young - vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, harmonica

Micah Nelson - electric guitar, vocals

Billy Talbot - bass, vocals

Ralph Molina - drums, vocals

I may be pessimistic about the dishwasher on rhythm guitar, but I would be happy with that set list.

There are a number of videos already on YouTube. I watched some from the early part of the set and thought it was pretty weak (for that band) but I'll give the kid a break and attribute most of that on first show rust; I'm sure they'll be better as the tour gets going.

But then I watched the last song and it made me smile.

They may be old, and spindly, and maybe not with all the best pieces, but it's still the horse, and rock and roll hasn't died just yet.

Far out.

Long live Neil Young.

The Stones announced most of their opening acts today.  WSP in Denver, Betty Lavette in Chicago, and the Linda Lindas in L.A. look interesting.  Was hoping for Gary Clark, Jr. in Seattle but we get Joe Bonamassa.  At least it's not the Ghost Hounds.

Who the hell are "The Beaches" LOL!

And where the heck are the NYCH Bay Area dates!?!?!? smiley

Wow

Denver is stoked as fuck

>>>At least it's not the Ghost Hounds.

That's evidently who I'm seeing.   Thanks for pumping me up.   no idea who they are.

Joe Bonamassa in Seattle?   Meh.

Denver gets Widespread Panic!

The Ghost Hounds are the Stones world equivalent of Moonalice, a band that is propped up by some deep pockets financer that allows them to insinuate themselves onto the scene.  At least Moonalice has some decent talent and developed to be okay.  Saw the Ghost Hounds open for the Stones at SoFi on the last tour.  Money is the only thing that gets them their slot.  They are from Pittsburgh, and don't do many shows other than opening for the Stones and getting lambasted by the fans.

The Linda Lindas are an all girl group of Los Angeles kids of Asian and Latino heritage, who are aspiring to be a younger version of Bikini Kill or Sleater-Kinney.  That will be an awfully large stage for the teenager/just out of their teens to play.  It will be interesting to see what type of reception they get.

Joe Bore-my-ass-offa

he wears his sunglasses at night.

Joe and Keith will compare guitar collections.

Joe gave some drunken interview to Guitar Player magazine once, claiming he knew where Clapton's long lost Les Paul was, then sobered up and had to print a retraction the next day.

Joe Bonamasshole.

think they'll be an interesting Jam posability at Denver , maybe a Schools,Herring, Not Fade away with Keef And ole Mick That'd be sweet

In for The Gorge.  Got four reserved seats on the aisle just to the left of the front of the soundboard, where the mix will be dialed in.  Got the Star Parking this time too, which will give us a shorter walk into the venue, and hopefully a faster exit after the show, so we can avoid the clusterfuck that is general parking at the Gorge.

Looked hard at the Bend tickets, but decided to hold off, as it will be tough to be away from work that much right then.

In for both nights in Burnaby and thinking of hitting The Gorge as well if he keeps mixing up the setlists.

He did six different songs on second night at SD. Lance, I agree with all you said up above.

I want to see them play Surfer Joe & Moe The Sleaze.  Saw it a long time ago around 1986 when they had just recently reconvened at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.  They opened with Opera Star, another long neglected track I wouldn't mind seeing again.

I was pretty much in disbelief walking way from the Cal Coast Open Ari Arena on Wed night, a beautiful little place I'd never been to. Neil was playing with this band before me my friend were even born and he was about to play a show with some of the same people tonight. Now. And I know from his days with POTR that on a good night he can still be a fucking volcano. It's been a few years since then though and so I wasn't sure of anything but there was hope and all kinds of gratitude for the possibility of seeing Neil and the Horse ride again and have a good night.  And that first night was a real good night.

A brief Hx about the song: I was fairly certain I was going to hear a song that is extremely dear to my heart at a Catalyst show in Santa Cruz in 1996. They had broken it out for the fist time in 14 years a few weeks before at a place called the Trocadero in SF and then played it again as the first show of what was supposed to be 4 pack of Catalyst shows in Santa Cruz. I was in Boston during the breakout at the Trocadero which was the same night the Year of the Horse was going to do the whole bells and whistle red carpet debut at the Castro Theatre. Neil was supposed to in attendance for that but opted to take the horse out instead which of course is what makes Neil, Neil. When they played that song at the Trocadero, it sent the world of Neil Young fans into a kind of frenzy. Time Fades Away is a pretty special album to many of us and I know there are many zoners who agree, and to me, that song in particular is just pure electic, biographical magic. I couldn't get tickets to the fist Catalyst show about a week after the breakout at the Trocadero which was a bummer because they played that song again at that theater. I was able to get one for the next show though, where it sure seemed likely they'd play it again. To say I was looking forward to it would have been an pretty big understatement. I was pulling out of my parking spot heading to the show Lone Wolf McQuade when my gf ran up to the car, I rolled down the window and she told me she had just heard on the radio that the show was canceled because Neil had cut his hand (making a ham sandwich as his midnight snack the night before we were to learn about later on).

And so back into hibernation that treasure would go and in hibernation it would stay and probably would have stayed if it wasn't for Willie Nelson's boys, who triggered something in Neil that was pretty special when they played with him. (Check out the Cortez encore from Jones Beach from that first tour in July 2015. I was there for that one and was hooked on the energy that band seemed to inject into Neil's veins from that moment on. And their love of his songs sure seemed to be the spark for him to undust many of these treasures that were buried deep, deep down somewhere.

I saw a bunch of the shows with that band but wasn't able to catch the song which was so special to me. I purposely refused to listen to it on tape during those years (and after) too, just in case I was lucky enough to get it. I've never chased songs in music, I learned a long time ago to chase moments and so on a conscious level, I wasn't chasing this song, was still chasing moments. But if I'm going to be completely honest with myself, I maybe was doing a little chasing on some levels I wasn't even admitting to myself, which I guess I couldn't really help. When Neil played his last show with POTR, I let it go though, because I knew it was basically going to go back under.

When me and my buddy were just off the rail opening night where Neil was bringing the Horse out of the barn, we had no idea what to expect. They had done THREE albums in the last 5 years and we had thought many of those songs were going to comprise the set lists. I liked some of those songs, the lyrics maybe weren't Edgar Allan Poe but the guitars were still there and Neil's vocals too, and songs like Help Me Lose My Mind, Canerican, Shape of You, Welcome Back to name a few, still had the spook to my ears anyway. I liked Colorado and Barn okay, not World Record so much, even though that's the most recent one produced by Rick Rubin.

Anyway, Neil's still writing songs and now he's going to tour with the Horse so it was an easy call for me and my friend, even though tickets were as expensive as they were. Just seems like that's how it is now for stuff like this. I have a feeling Garcia would be the only one who wouldn't be charging these kinds of prices. He was the lone voice giving the lone veto during all the band meetings after 'In the Dark' where every other band member wanted to raise the prices to the shows, but he stood firm and refused every time, saying he wanted regular people to be able to see him. I think he would have done the same today if he was still here. But he would have been the only one.

Anyway...when the huge black curtain with the words LOVE EARTH dropped to the ground, startling everyone, there was a big gasp among a lot of folks in that nice place when they saw what was behind it. What we saw were some of the stage stet up from the Rust NEVER SLEEPS tour from 1978. Me and my buddy looked at each other not knowing what to think.

And then they walk on stage and launch into Cortez the Killer, a song they've played like 500 times but have never even come close to thinking about opening a show with. And in that moment we knew this could be a special night. And that it was. Props to Micah who was able to achieve that Horse sound on Neil's accompanying guitar that was handed down from Whitten and then Poncho---I didn't love the work Nils did the few times I saw him in that band (he's obviously a great player but Neil (and Bruce) don't really want greatness from him it seems). I wasn't sure what to expect from Micah but he helped the Horse be the Horse and he had that sound. I was impressed. Billy was also really digging it, it seemed. Hearing Billy again was fucking sublime. His notes ricochet off your chest like thunder. Man, did I miss that guy. Neil and those guys on Cortez, Losing End, Powderfinger and Down by the River and all the rest...it was just the greatest thing to see that man with that band playing like that again in the year 2024.

He decided to play his solo acoustic songs at the end of the electic set, which I really liked, I'd never seen him play them in that slot. And then he came out for an encore with the band and their electic guitars. And he looked straight ahead and slammed into those glorious chords to open that glorious song and I nearly had a fucking stroke. Don't be Denied. I never thought he would play that song on this tour, never in a million years on an opening night, just didn't think it was at all possible. I'm just glad I was able to keep breathing after those chords so I could take in the majesty of what was to follow. I don't think I've had that much dopamine running through my cerebral cortex since Garcia launched into Visions of Johanna (another incredibly special song to me) in Utah, Jan of 1995.

I was in 8th grade when I first heard the guitars on Cortez, all I was listening to was the Beatles, Stones, Who and Dylan and those guitars haunted me then and still haunt me now. And when I first heard the Time Fades Away version of Don't be Denied, I just couldn't believe how alive a song could sound coming from speakers. It was like you could feel his breath on your face with those vocals. The second show was fine, some great highlights like Country Home, Harvest Moon, White Line among others. But that first night hit me like a ton of bricks and those chords hit me like a tsunami--what it did to my body is something I'll take with me as long as I have any cognitive abilities at all.

Apologies for the ridiculously LONG, ENDLESS post Zoners, but Neil Young is still doing it and he brought back Billy and Ralph and they are still doing it. And does it get any better than that? Walton was behind me to the side and I asked him that and he nodded his head in agreement with that infectious smile of his. It just doesn't get any better.

Thank you Neil.

Dude, you kiddin'? NO APOLOGIES NEEDED. Thanks for posting that. Ain't EVER anything wrong about a heartfelt post about a show you loved. We're about the love affair with the music, too.

damn sam.

Epic review of what sounds like an epic show. Thanks for stopping by, Mr. Felina.

Just WTF !!!!

Thank you, mr felina. Yowza! That was a great review, very moving. I was hanging on as you wrote along. Very nice to see you.

I love Neil, the raw sound of the Horse, and Neil some more.

Great review!

Atta' boy felina. I knew you would be at those shows, thanks for posting your heavy review. I especially liked how you didn't mention the name of the song that flipped your lid 'till the end. Good stuff there.

(One tiny correction, for the sake of accuracy, the Trocadero show in SF & the Catalyst show the next week happened in May of '97. I know you're a stickler on the details mr f)

Don't Be Denied is such a great song. The version from the 2nd night of the 2016 (and final) Bridge Benefit concert that Nora Jones and her band did with with Neil sitting in was brilliant, and so different then electric versions. Did you catch that one?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yInreIUFpM

I hope I can get to a show on this tour, but these days that's getting less & less likely (it doesn't help that he seems to be dissing the BA yet again) but I can be satisfied knowing that mrfelina is representing.

Thanks for taking the time to post your review here felina, this place is always a little more alive when you're around.

(Plus, you write longer posts than me, which is nice)

Long may you run!

Damn!  Do all you can to get to a show on this tour, you will be sonically rewarded big time.  Golden Gate park Horse in 2010 was so long ago i had forgotten how dripy~trippy Blackie hits you during explorations.  Pretty cool how my first Neil show 9/9/1996 they opened with Hey Hey My My (Into The Black)---which was last nights closer, in '96 they also played Sedan Delivery, and....

Danger Bird--->which was last night's PHX encore!!  (silly people who left too early.)

Mahalo and blessings to Crazy Horse and The Road Crew.  Warning: DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS TOUR
"..Tomorrow is a long long time if you're a memory..
Trying to find peace of mind.."                ___Horse crushed that last night too.

They had put the recording of Greensleeves on the house sound after Hey Hey, My My.  This has pretty much always meant the show is over at NY&CH shows.  People were streaming for the exits.  The house lights never came up though, and those patient enough to wait got a Nils Lofgren guest sit-in on Dangerbird.

IMG_3474.jpegIMG_3475.jpeg

The Stones tour opener is on tap for tonight.

Thanks for the reviews Felina and Flower Power.....

One of my friends is a serious Neil junkie and went to the San Diego shows and then flew to Phoenix for this.

He told me before SD he thought there was a good chance of a Nils sit-in because he lives in Arizona and the

Springsteen tour hasn't started yet....

It was a GA pit, he was second it or third "row", stage right...

He said the show seemed to be over, the house music was on, and people were leaving.

He didn't budge and then they came out and did Dangerbird.

    Wild stuff....

Thanks Zoners for the kind words! I really miss seeing some of you at Terrapin, shame that place had to close. I can still feel Judit's hug from all those years back. It was in the parking lot after seeing John and Phil play a electric Ripple in the bar. Phil sang the same freaking GORGEOUS baritone backup vocals to John's lead as he did when they played an electric Ripple from this exact date back in 1971, at those legendary Fillmore East shows (and one on tomorrow's date too). I was on cloud nine after hearing that because those Ripples are sort of biblical to me. You're a great hugger Judit!

Last night as my 12 year old daughter was going to bed, she asked to hear the song Don't be Denied because I was telling her about the show I heard. So this being 2024, we simply went to my computer and easily found the night in question so she could actually see and hear what I saw and heard!! I'd already surreptitiously snuck some Neil songs (and Reed, Waits, Dylan etc) onto the car mixes I've been making for her since she was 3 or so--the majority of stuff having become female pop singers which she resonates with more. (Making these mixes for the last few years, I definitely have more of an appreciation for Taylor Swift than I had before!) But I sneak a song or two from my universe onto them and so she had heard songs like Love is a Rose and I Believe in You on those mixes and knew his voice. It was a funny moment (fatherhood to me is all about these special moments that will live in me forever) because as we are watching the first few strums of those chords captured by someone in the upper section, she points to an area by the stage in front of Neil and says "look at that guy daddy, he looks like he was happier than even you." I could feel my face turn red as I thought for a few seconds and considered what to say about the guy jumping up and down like he'd just discovered he'd won 65 million dollars in that day's lottery. I decided on the truth of course (lying to one's daughter isn't at all easy) and said that the guy was actually me. Never in my previous concert going days catching Garcia and co. could I have had a moment like that a few days after seeing some show. It was pretty funny, especially since she claimed (outwardly at least) that she wasn't embarrassed by it but thought it was "cool." "Look how close you were to him!"

I still don't understand Neil's reluctance to put the Bay area as a stop on some of these tours. I know some of us bought the story that it was due to his annual Bridge shows but I think that theory has been debunked pretty well by now. I have to assume Lance has some ideas as to why this happens way too often. We aren't always sure what Lance is "allowed" to share with us though, so there's that. :)

And maybe I'll take this opportunity to get something off my chest even though I'm fairly certain it has nothing to do with Neil not wanting to play out here that much...although bad energy is bad energy. When I'm looking at an upcoming tour and realizing I'm going to have to go to Reno or LA or wherever to be able to catch Neil, I have this voice in my head that says I deserve this from the bad karma I generated during the Old Princeton Landing shows back in 1996.

See...what happened is this: I would enter that cool ass bar (that Anthony Bourdain would probably adore) in the afternoon before they kicked everyone out. I'd hang out at the bar and then I'd find myself walking to the bathroom. And then I'd find myself sitting on the same toilet seat for quite a while (sometimes standing on it), completely ready to be busted by someone who works there and fully prepared to fall on my knees and beg for mercy. And then a few hours later, after somehow not being discovered (several pretty close calls though), I would find myself nonchalantly walking out of the bathroom into the show to find friends as if everything was completely normal.

Yes, this is terrible behavior. They wouldn't let you go to 2 consecutive shows is the thing. They'd sell single tickets for the next night's show outside while Neil was playing the set closer for the people who made it into the show that night. That way, no one could go to 2 shows in a row. It allowed for more people to be able to see this incredibly rare happening. I don't really have a defense other than it was Neil and the Horse in THAT place. It was SO loud and SO intense and I was fucking hooked like I had never been hooked before. I went up to Elliot Roberts (Neil's manger) at some show a few years later and confessed everything to him and begged him to let me give him 80 bucks (shows were 20.00 each) for the shows I went to without paying. He just laughed shaking his head and wouldn't let me give him anything. I still have that karma though. Definitely not proud of it but it does feel cleansing to confess. And I feel safe doing that with Zoners, so that's good too!

Lance, I was at that bridge show. In fact, I recall you saying to me on the Zone that you saw someone going a little nuts (I think you were 10 rows or so behind) when Neil took a verse in the middle of the song before handing the keys back to the wonderful Miss Jones, and said to yourself 'that has to be felina'. BTW, thanks for the year correction, Neil dates are not organized in my mind the same way GD dates are. But this stuff is important and years matter.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest Zoners!  heartheartheart

You may have heard the story how when The Stones played Winterland in 1972, some fan without tickets rented a limo and driver and sat in the back dressed up as Jagger and drove towards the (underground?) performer parking area. On the way in, he gave a little wave to Bill Graham, which tipped him off that it wasn't Mick, because "Mick never waves at me". So Bill busted him but still let him in for his ingenuity and determination.

Felina, your story above may not be quite on the same level, but Elliot probably admired your moxie anyways. I'm sure a lot Zoners/Rusties would agree.yes

felina, it's not about you man.

There's no bad karma from what you did, those special shows were too rare & too unbelievably amazing to feel bad about any stealth actions taken. You took initiative and did what you had to do.

There WOULD be bad karma if you weren't a fan but were just posing and blabbed all through the shows, but out of all the many serious Neil freaks I know, you are at the top of that freak mountain; you deserved to be there as much or more than anyone.

But if it makes you feel any better, as someone who did what I had to do to get into those shows and finagled my way into a ticketing/door person gig for twelve of the sixteen shows (I missed the first four) and was loosely connected to the "security" there, I officially absolve you of any shenanigans. You're off the hook.

And as I am now a couple of years removed from any remaining ties to what was long ago a great company and am retired overall, I am "allowed" to talk about anything I know, or think I know (Terrapin Crossroads excluded, in no small part thanks to YOU mr felina!).

I once asked Neil's longtime road manager if the reason why he so often skipped the Bay Area was because of perceived dings on Bridge ticket sales. He laughed and said there's usually no way to know what Neil's thinking, but he seriously doubted that Bridge ticket sales had anything to do with it.

This one seems strange to me though, because it's a full Live Nation tour (not much different than playin' for Pepsi?) which means that the artists usually have little say in venues and dates. Neil obviously will have a little more say than most, but from a business sense (and LN thinks of little else) the current BA omission is odd. I'm still expecting/hoping for a Concord Pavilion show to be added; we will see.

Now I have to sack up and try to get myself to SF tonight for a Lettuce show with John Scofield. This used to be so easy for me, but these days it's harder & harder.

It's not dark yet, but it's gettin' there.

What the fuck. Shut up and.......

GO TO THE SHOW!

Dave, the latest link doesn't link to anywhere - any others?

Sorry I couldn't make it work better for you all.  They just finished.

I was pulling all my links off of the iorr.org show thread.  There will be a lot of links there of video and pictures from the show.

thanks dave

zig zaggin' through ghostland

Kind of a muddy mix for an official release, and the last couple of songs in the first set are long shots of the stage and screens, and the audio level drops drastically.

~~By chance are your going to buy a concert poster or T-shirt at upcoming Horse show? _-  Can i please buy you a beer if you buy me a white XL Crazy Horse concert T-shirt?

Lol.  Went to buy a shirt of show and was like "Fuuuuuu#k!" ---->b/c accidentally left my wallet back in the rental car in lot.  Ooof.
I'd CashApp you whatever amount of $$ to more than cover estimated cost before-hand, or you can let me know afterwards--whatever is easier.  Id of course pay for shipping...
(I looked Neil's official site all shirts are Sold Out)  email in profile.
Big thank you for considering and/or helping me out.

Thank Lance, it feels good to be absolved!

At least for the OPL stuff...

Take good care of yourselves, Zoners!!

Just listened to the 4/24/24 NY&CH show, and damn that sounds good!

I'm starting to think Neil is going to skip the Bay Area and go home from the Hollywood Bowl.....

48 minutes of some pretty fine audience video from 4/24/24 NY&CH:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFPEwnyvYD4

After just watching some San Diego clips with different angles I noticed another reason why it doesn't sound quite right to me.

Ralph isn't using drum sticks, he's playing with bamboo brushes that are bound at the tip. Those are very common when a drummer is playing with acoustic music, not so much when playing full-on rock 'n roll. It makes a definite sonic difference.

I wonder what that's about?

It could well be a physical issue like arthritis or some other hand or wrist problem, which wouldn't be that surprising since he's got to be pushing 80.

Whatever the reason, it's clearly noticeable, and it's a shame.

But it's not Crazy Horse without Ralph Molina. Even if he's just tippy-tapping now, his unique groove is essential to the sound of that band. You can't replace him and still call it Crazy Horse.

Ralph has never been a "busy" drummer, he's still keeping the beat and Billy is there so it IS Crazy Horse, but at least to my ear that issue along with Micah's hesitant, less assertive rhythm guitar is leading to a noticeable lapse of dynamic weight, of punch in the sound.

Varying parts of that could be attributed to start-of-tour rust and me listening to it on videos (and me wanting them to sound like they did 25 years ago) but a drummer using bamboo brushes instead of sticks is something different.

Sigh.

Maybe I'm not feeling so bad if they skip my region.

I think it's simply age Tom. The brushes absorb the impact and don't transfer as much energy into creaky old arms. It's easier on the elbows and shoulders.

Yeah, I get that Woz, but this isn't the same thing as sitting instead of standing, or even playing shorter sets. This makes a real difference in the music itself.

But no matter, I probably won't see this group anyway, and I'm satisfied with my Crazy Horse history over the years.

So don't mind me folks. Get out and see the shows and hopefully everyone who does will have an experience similar to felina's.

Carry on.

^ jaded vet alert ...whomp whomp

Hey Lance. My favorite NY Bay Area event was 79 or 80 at KPA. Tickets on sale at noon, show at 8. I got 3 sets of tickets before Bobby Corona told me not to come back. It was a warm up for the Trans tour. Any chance you were there?

Austin canceled due to weather and Dallas postponed for the same reason.

That's too bad but maybe a few extra days to hone in before ATL:)

I'll fall into the jaded vet label.   Do you go a crazy horse show to see jazz drums?

It's Stones Day at New Orleans Jazzfest today.  The forecast is for rain and temps in the low 80s during their 5-7:30 p.m. slot.  It should be a memorable show, as the Stones look to finally play Jazzfest after having to cancel two scheduled appearances due to COVID and Mick Jagger's heart valve surgery.  Expect guest sit-ins and some slipping and sliding in the mud.

My brother arrived yesterday. I hope they get a ripping show and it doesn't rain too hard....

My cousin says no rain and perfect temps.  Keith must have got his rain stick out.

Irma Thomas Time on my Side?

I saw some other guy talking about his rehearsal with them... and the dead flowers clip

Game on for Irma Thomas!

Irma Thomas to perform with The Rolling Stones at Jazz Fest

Thomas, now 83, and lead singer Mick Jagger, now 80, had to work out some of the kinks of the classic hit "Time is on My Side," before their performance Thursday.

NEW ORLEANS — It's a rock and roll reunion, 60 years in the making. The Rolling Stones and Irma Thomas -- two acts that redefined popular music in the 1960s are set to perform together at Jazz Fest on Thursday.

"I rehearsed with them yesterday and it's on," Thomas told WWL Louisiana Thursday about her reunion with the Stones. "I will be called somewhere in the middle of his set."

Nineteen-sixty-four was a defining year for both the vocal stylings of The Rolling Stones and their lead singer Jagger. Arriving in The United States just a few months after The Beatles, the song "Time is On My Side" was the band's first top 10 hit in America.

They even performed the song on their debut on the Ed Sullivan Show in October 1964. But the band owes the success of that hit to the Soul Queen of New Orleans herself -- Irma Thomas, whose improvisations and vocal stylings can be found inside and all around The Rolling Stones' hit.

Thomas, now 83, and Rolling Stones' lead singer Mick Jagger, now 80, had to work out some of the kinks of the classic hit before their performance Thursday.

"(Jagger) was very pleasant to me and we had fun," Thomas said Thursday. "He had to relearn the song because he had not sung it in a long time - I can relate to that."

And even though Thomas had released and recorded her cover of "Time is On My Side," months before the Stones did, the British band's rendition eclipsed the commercial success of Thomas' version. As a result, Thomas often had to contend with the fact that when she sang the song, people would associate her epic vocal riffing with Jagger's version.

"I've never been angry with them," Thomas told NOLA.com in April. "I just got tired of explaining it all. Now people can Google it and realize that I'm not singing the Rolling Stones."

Other New Orleans artists have been scheduled to play alongside the Rolling Stones on Thursday night, including Dwayne Dopsie and The Zydeco Hellraisers.

"I just rehearsed with the Rolling Stones who asked to have me be apart of their show tomorrow at the New Orleans Jazz Festival," the zydeco group posted on social media Wednesday. "This is a legendary rock and roll band I grew up listening to and now to be playing on the stage with them giving my zydeco feel to their music is just mind blowing and a true blessing!"

>>>jaded vet alert<<<

I'll wear that for my grumpy attitude about Micah (Mehcah), but whether a jaded vet or excited newbie, in a rock band like Crazy Horse the drum strikes need to sound sharp and cut through like a gunshot or a well-stuck baseball, not like a wet sponge dropped onto a soft floor.

I suppose it's fine if some folks don't notice or just don't care, but for those people, as Prince used to say........... we'll just put you over there.

>>>My favorite NY Bay Area event was 79 or 80 at KPA... Any chance you were there<<<

It took me a minute to figure out what KPA was. I do remember that show but I wasn't there. In those days I wasn't much into Neil (or that venue) so I didn't even try. I remember the show because a friend got in and still talks about that show to this day.

And to honor the dual subjects of this thread, I have a question about the Stones (who coincidentally also lead me to think, "there's something wrong with the drumming").

Is Karl Denson with the Stones on this tour?

I hope so, if just for his sake. He's always struck me as a good guy, and I imagine that's a pretty good gig.

Yes, Karl has been their sax player since Bobby Keys bowed out.

Fun set today at Jazzfest with a couple of guest sit-ins:

IMG_3482.jpeg

Does Neil have openers this tour.   I think there was one for San Diego but otherwise?

Rev. Billy has been opening the shows.  I'm unfamiliar with him.  Can't imagine the lack of a recognizable opener is helping ticket sales.  I guess Neil doesn't care, just wants the stage warmed up.

Came home for lunch today and my wife presents me with RS Denver tix, plane tix and a hotel for the weekend.

She loves WSP

And she sure loves you, Tim. Happy June in Denver!

I love the set lists. So good that they played Ohio on the 4th, the anniversary of the Kent State killings. Thanks, Dave.

Looks like Mick Jagger made the most out of his visit to Jazzfest:

At 80 he still seems fully engaged in life, which is great for him and an inspiration to all.

Like A Hurricane (tour debut)

I figure this was coming! DBTR and Cortez are basically the same song in Em. Love the Hurricane!

Hope this video stays up for awhile.  Thanks so much.  Love me some Neil!
