"CONCERT TOURS are no longer fun. CONCERT TOURS not what they were" does not explicitly say he won't be touring any more. Maybe Neil has an idea for making them fun again.
One of the bedrock principles of our economic system is that demand determines price. Because of this I'm curious how ticket scalping came to be illegal in the first place. My guess is the entertainment industry leaned on lawmakers to control the resale market until they figured out a way to become scalpers themselves.
Neil's just whining, because god forbid the artist ever appears culpable in any of this modern ticketing mess.
It's understandable that the fans are misinformed about what's wrong with the ticketing machine, but it would be nice if the artists, who ultimately control much of what happens, or the fool politicians who are always posing for TV time had a clue before they talked.
The simple fact is that the big time online "broker" organizations are to blame for everything except the fees, which seem ridiculous but in the bigger picture are just an annoyance. Eliminate the scalping and super high resale tix, Dynamic Pricing, Platinum/Premium tickets and no tickets available immediately after the on sale all go away.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure how scalping can be effectively eliminated. First, it's hard to outlaw someone selling something that belongs to them, and if laws could be created against that, how to effectively enforce them?
But this endless yammering against TicketMaster as the entity to blame for all this is just foolish, and Gregg Perloff, the president of Another Planet and someone who absolutely is informed and has no love for TM or Live Nation agrees with me...
Perloff doesn't put forth what I'd call solid arguments. For example, on the subject of monopolies, he says "it’s hard for me to take the government seriously when they say they want to stop monopolies when there are monopolies in every part of business, from telecom to transportation." So, he's acknowledging TM's dominance, and justifying it by saying that there's monopolies in other industries. That's some weak sauce.
Also weak was his best way to stop scalping, which he admitted at the end didn't work: "We made people line up the day before the show and present an ID when buying tickets." In the 21st century? Does Perloff not know that people travel long distances to see shows these days, and they might not want to do that without tickets in hand?
Does Billy Strings do something different than most? Seems like I hear good things about his ticket prices and not all the complaining about the secondary market and the gold circle stuff and whatever else is going on these days like dynamic pricing. I'll admit I know little concerning the machinations of modern day concert ticketing.
"Eliminate the scalping and super high resale tix, Dynamic Pricing, Platinum/Premium tickets and no tickets available immediately after the on sale all go away."
The Cure did for their upcoming tour and it worked. Also make it illegal to sell a ticket you don't have in your possession. Technically, if you don't really have it, you can't sell it. And you can't sell the opportunity to purchase a ticket.
And Neil was one of the very first to start charging high ticket prices. He didn't like going on stage and seeing the first 5 rows filled with suits and ties, screaming for 'Old Man'.
>>.Does Billy Strings do something different than most?
He had a few strategies this tour for the tiny venues. In Nashville you had to buy a ticket to the arena show to get access to buy for the Ryman. For Athens, you had to go in a "lottery" to a get access to buy for show. Everyone got accepted in the lottery (not much of a lottery) and then tickets were sold out in 2 minutes. Some people thought they had won the lottery so they'd automatically get tickets but this wasn't made clear. And if you did get tickets, you only could get two and the buyer had to be one of the attendees. No transferring. Still there were tickets on stub hub for $1300 before the show.
Despite our fondness for Billy, he's still a bluegrass musician that has a much smaller following than other genres. He's bumped up his venues size - in Atlanta he played one last feb that was max 2000 and this year was playing an arena. I also note he plays some off the beaten path places - Huntsville and Mobile, Alabama for instance. . It's relatively easy to get tickets to those places versus a city with a more robust population. I'm a bit surprised he only did one show in ATL compared to 4 last year at the smaller venue but it might have been a test run to see what the draw is. I'm sure they have some analytics somewhere, or a promoter or venue decision. Who knows.
Enjoy it while it lasts.
Phish here sold out quickly and despite not having interest, I have many friends looking. It feels a bit 90's deadish to me.

I would take anything close
I would take anything close to $3K for my decent seat at the upcoming and long sold out LA Greek 'Light Up The Blues' benefit!

Nothing misleading at all.
Nothing misleading at all. It's a direct quote. He's probably going to keep doing one-offs, but I doubt we'll ever see another tour from him.

Here's what Billy Talbot had
Here's what Billy Talbot had to say last month about a possible CH tour when talking about the two albums about to be released:
"There has been some discussion."
"It will probably be next year, if not sooner. I don't know how we would do it, but in any case I'd love to play some more."
"I think that at least one more is called for at this time."
So there's that....

Once upon a time, scalping
Once upon a time, scalping was illegal. Why can't it be again?? We actually have the technology to prevent it, now.

Grandpa said to cousin jed
Sittin' on the porch,
"i won't retire
But i might retread
Seems like that guy singin' this song
Been doin' it for a long time
Is there anything he knows
That he ain't said?
Sing a song for freedom
Sing a song for love
Sing a song for depressed angels
Falling from above"
