New Bear's Sonic Journals : Sing Out w Garcia/Weir 1981 BCT

Sadly, Big Brother at the Carousel Ballroom is the only "bear's sonic journal" that has managed to stay in the indefinite rotation over here

YMMV

This was an excellent show. Odetta was also on the bill, it's a shame that her set isn't included in this release. I had never heard of her, and the power & style of her voice blew my 20-year-old mind that night.

The Dead's acoustic set is really good, the Rhythm Devils were trippy and my recollections are that the Kate Wolf & Rosalie Sorrels sets were good also, but I don't know if I'd listen to it enough to spend $30 on it. Then again, $30 isn't really that much, I have some great memories of a really fun night with a bunch of friends and it would be a cool memento of a real good time from long, long ago, so maybe.

>>>It is also the final live recording he (Owlsey) made of any members of the Grateful Dead<<<

I know that this is not true. Later that same year he recorded an odd little show in a little church in Berkeley headlined by a performance of Zakir Hussain and his legendary father Ustad Alla Rakha, but the opening set was Zakir & Mickey Hart improvising on a wide array of percussion instruments, which is why I was there.

Before the show Owlsey informed the small audience that he was trying something different and had placed multiple small, very sensitive microphones all around the wooden floor of the small church, and he very sternly admonished us to NOT tap our feet or move around during the performance. Ultimately, the recording must not have come out well, as despite many efforts over the years I have never found any recordings or mention of that show.

A pity, because the show was AMAZING. I had never heard of Zakir Hussain, let alone Alla Rakha. I was there because Mickey was there, but after that night I became a life-long fan of Zakir's and consider him to be a genius. But as great as he is, his father WIPED THE FLOOR with him that night. I've never before or since seen hands move the way Alla Rakha's did that night. It was unreal. I would be very happy to pay $30 for THAT recording.

An amusing aside from that show; after Mickey's set a few of us dead heads were standing around Owlsey's little mixer while he explained to us what he was trying that night, and Mickey barged in asking him for weed. Owlsey grumpily said he didn't have any and Mickey laughed and said, "BULLSHIT! Common' Bear, you ALWAYS have some!" Owlsey harrumphed, took out a tin and gave Mickey a few buds. Even from five feet away the smell of those buds knocked my head back, I guess it's not a surprise that Owlsey Stanley would only have the best weed.

Thanks for the memories, Lance. Great story!

Wow!!!   Great story.   Felt like I was there.

and, I have the Doc and Merle Watson sonic journey in regular rotation and it never disappoints.
