It’s a Honda CRF1000L, they call it an “Adventure Bike” because it’s good for both on or off road. I plan to do a lot of camping trips with it once I have figured out how to ride that thing, lol (if it doesn’t kill me first).
We have had a few snow storms and cold crappy weather for a couple of months, but today it got to 58 and most of the snow has melted...so I took her out for a nice ride :-) It felt nice. Can’t wait for Spring!

Yeah, it really is an awesome go anywhere bike. It made history winning several Paris-Dakar races in the late 80s but Honda discontinued it after the 2003 model. In 2016 a new version came out with a larger 1,000 cc parallel-twin engine with a 270° crank. I held out for the 2018 model, they worked out a few bugs and updated the electronics. Black is also a new color for this year. It’s totally different from the beemer I had before which was a lot faster (actually too fast for me) and strictly pavement. This one has close to 10 inch suspension travel and a dirt bike geometry, it opens up a whole new world of off road riding.
Well I'm sad to report that my Africa Twin is no more, RIP.
I was out riding on the Tuesday after Memorial Day when it started making a nasty noise and lost power. It was towed home and then to the shop a few days later. The fuel pump gear, a shaft and other metal parts/gears had sudden catastrophic failure, a chain reaction happened, metal bits circulating through the engine in the oil. Of course it was recently out of warranty. I reached out to Honda and they agreed to pay for replacement parts however the labor costs involved (which they will not cover) would be more than it is worth. Mechanic said it would need a complete rebuild or replacement of the engine. My insurance company would not cover it because there was no "accident"...it would have been covered if I hit a rock or if a tree fell on it something like that. Maybe I can scrap it for parts :-(
I had a Honda CB360T, bought new in '76. Put my buddy and 2 external frame backpacks on it and flogged that poor thing up and over Sonora Pass (el. 9,624 ft). On the way home, stood in front of Safeway in Sonora to sell a joint to get gas money to get home. Returning over Altamont Pass against a strong headwind, burned a valve. Honda paid for the full repair under warranty.
Old CB 100 owner here. Hand me down from my cousin. I got it when I was 14, tore the fender off and rode it off road for a couple years with all my friends on their Yamaha 80s. Turned 16 and put the fender back on And rode it on the road for a year or two. It still sits in the garage I grew up in at my brothers home. I would love to ride again, but not here in Florida. One of them 3 wheel Can Ams might be doable.
