New Definitions

Forums:

We talk past each other so often it's ridiculous. What is a Republican and Democrat? What is Conservative and Liberal? What is Radicalism and Extremism? What is Religion and Spirituality? And on and on and on.

As some of you know, the word Liberal has different meanings in Europe and America. In Europe, a Liberal is generally thought of as conservative. How can this be? There is a reason, but not yet.

Let me suggest a new scheme for definition, so that may all understand each other and talk together.

Aristocracy - Conservative

Republicanism - Centrist

Democracy - Liberal

If you want a king and a strict vertical hierarchy of stations, with the common people on the bottom, then you are a Conservative.

If you want power extended to a Senate of elected autonomous representatives to rule over the people, then you are a Republican.

If you want power further extended to all the people, leaving hierarchy in it's proper places to run certain institutions, then you are a Democrat.

And since all patents of nobility must be forsaken if a Lord or Lady wants American citizenship, this means that an American cannot be a true Conservative. The so-called conservatives in America should be Republican Democrats, and that seems to mostly jive with our history.

What do yall say? Of course there's a lot more to talk about, but let's begin here.

Good morning.

So, you want to go back a few hundred years and have the labels solely based on the form of government, not social or economic views? You're not really proposing radical new definitions.

Most Americans don't know the difference between a republic or democracy. They do know what their political and social views are.

Oh, and how do state's rights fit in?

As a liberal, one for democracy, if a state voted by majority that abortion should be illegal or gays should be kept out of businesses, you'd be all for that.

You probably have a better chance of everyone going with your naming convention than getting everyone to do what really needs to be done, Floops.

Relearn the art of realistic compromise.

"Pleading the trump" means it's everybody's fault but mine.

I don't know what soul means.

If 6 turned out 2 B 9, I don't mind.

People have enough trouble understanding the current definitions.

Not sure that a new scheme for definitions would help any.
