New Grateful Dead book digs up skeletons in the closet

Marquee star Mickey Hartlaugh

turf war

In retrospect, it would have been better if Phil never signed on to do concerts with the other band members post Garcia. A clean cut from it all. Good luck and god bless. Among others, the ill fated 2009 tour and Fare Thee Well shows just stirred up a whole lotta bad juju.

Gangs are tough to get out of however. Especially ones that pay really well.

“It turned out that Phil and his wife were Macbeth and Lady Macbeth,” Selvin recently said

sounds like the theme is that Phil Lesh is a bad person for doing what Phil wants and not what Weir, Selvin and others want Phil to do.

Phil achieved the status of "zero fucks to give" years before the phrase was coined.

So . . . no book signing @ TXR?

Cool.  Most GD books follow the same pattern - first half covers the 60s, then the next third the 70s, and the remainder the 80s and 90s culminating in Jerry's death with a handful of pages at best serving as a post script.   Although the Grateful Dead dudes have chilled out in their old age, there still has been enough bad behavior and interesting tidbits over the past 22 years to warrant a new book.  I will have to get this one soon.

Selvin deserves to be stuck in an elevator with Rockstar Richard for several days

Sounds like Selvin prides himself having never seen the band two nights in a row...that should tell you something.  Phil has done more for this scene musically and otherwise than anyone since Garcia's passing.  Phil & Bob are in a beautiful place right now, first night Chicago Theater was one of the most wonderful things I've ever seen on a stage.

How is this any different than Scott Allen’s book ..Aces back to back..or does he not count? everybody knows the stories..Selvin missed da boat...trying to cash in a little too late...fuck his axe grinding ass..hopefully the Lesh’s take the high road and don’t respond..

sounds interesting.

You can get the gist of this book after the first few paragraphs; over the top sensationalism covered with just enough factual content to keep you reading.  I don't doubt that most of the material covered is true to life, but the tone of the writing is so concentrated on expressing the inter group problems and tension that it reads like something out of a Hollywood scandal sheet of the 1930's.  It certainly won't change any opinions that I've already formed about these folks over the past 45 years, the rose covered glasses came off a long time ago.  If you didn't know that Phil was highly opinionated to the point of often rubbing others the wrong way, not afraid to let others know what he thought, and that he and his wife are fiercely loyal to one another then you haven't been paying attention for the past twenty years.

Joel Selvin is the ambulance chaser of bay area journalism. Pre-Internet, his few sentences in the "Pink (entertainment) section" of Sunday's San Francisco Chronicle newspaper -- the paper was actually colored pink -- was one of the only reliable ways we found out about local hippie music. But his writing is about as deep as my asscrack and as insightful as a fortune cookie. Can't wait to read the tawdry details once the book ends up in the discount bin.

>>Marquee star Mickey Hart

Yes, Phil, Bob and Mickey have fronted their own bands making them Marquee stars.

Thanks, Captain Obvious.

Troll ^^^

It’s a bullshit lie

Is it okay if I just like the music and don't care or need to read about the bullshit (most of which I already learned here and on Bret's Zone over the years)?

It's OK.

Thanks, Surf

People can't get along

story of the world from the beginning of time

Right? I mean band members hatin on each other.  People writing about it.  Unheard of!

I prefer the way of 6 on this one. Listen to the music and remember the good stuff. I dont really care who or why someone got pushed down the stairs. smiley(ok maybe a little)

Finished it, not a lot of anything that you didn't already know or suspect.  The details might be a bit clearer but the overall picture remains the same.  Jill comes off as the villain in this tale, with Phil coming across badly but one suspects that Selvin needed a bad guy(s) to make this work so that has to be taken into account.  You definitely get the sense that he's being kinder to the folks who talked with him.  However, most of the tales of bad behavior have a name associated with them so it's not all just anonymous gossip. The whole idea behind Dead$Co does make a lot more sense after reading this book.  Mickey, Billy and Bobby finally showing that big meany Phil that they can play big venues without him on board.  Take that!

His "analysis" of the FTW shows is ridiculous and would qualify for a bad writing contest even without the gratuitous swipes at Phil's vocals.  He appears oblivious to the fact that one of the main reasons the FTW shows sold so well was that they were basically marketed as the Grateful Dead, something which the band has studiously avoided since Garcia's death.  His description of the crowds is comical, pretty much what you would see at any Dead related gig but he thinks it was totally unique.  The guy obviously never spent more than ten minutes around the scene and it shows.

And why can't these people ever get a good fact checker to proof read their books?  Plenty of small yet irritating mistakes with dates, etc.

Okay, so Phil and Jill are huge assholes. Big deal.

Why people get so defensive is beyond me?

Love me some Phil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yesyesyes

Although, with that being said, I wish that shit with Kimock would have never went down! Think we missed out on some really good music in my opinion!

If the Kimock breakup had not happened then the Hallowed Q would likely have not happened either.

And then the world would have been so gray & dull.

Would you mess with this woman? I certainly wouldn't.

Jill using steroids ...talk about your tabloid trash...what a joke...

That's Jill? I thought it was Caitlyn Jenner.

^lol

She actually does resemble the former triathaloner. Good eye.

The only one that could keep up with Phil being Phil was Garcia.  It was never a good idea to stick the remaining crew in a room for more than a few minutes.

There would have always been bands playing GD music but the scene that still exists today -- Dead Co etc -- has a lot to do with PLQ tearing it up and breathing new life into the songs.  Ratdog had some good moments but the beginnings of that band was a disaster and was losing #'s at every show.  PLQ was the kick in the ass that Bobby needed.

Who's claiming that Jill took roids?

The book claims that Bobby made a reference to her aggressive behavior being attributed to medication she was talking for her thyroid cancer.

The old 'Jill has the thyroid of a jerk!' diss.

They should have all just shut up and not talked to this dweed.  Be happy that the money is still coming in the door.

The Ballad of Phil and Jill.

Christ you know it ain't easy.

"This is the water,

and this is the well.

Drink full, and descend.

The horse is the white of the eyes,

and dark within."

Considering what they have been through I’m amazed they can even stand being in the same country together never mind sharing a stage. Being a key member of a large Burningman camp for three years running gave me the tiniest glimpse into creative collaboration under less than sober circumstances. I can’t even begin to imagine the slights both real and imagined that they have all suffered amongst each other.

The Stones are still getting along - just saying

^^^^

even after Keith... in his book.. saying mick’s junk is tiny......money talks...

I think Jerry Hall disputed that.

Yeah the roar of the crowd is a powerful drug. On any given Sunday people ruin their bodies and brains for it.

Jerry Hall is a size queen?  Maybe she was just comfortable with the Tiny Todger.

1/2 way thru the book. Whoa...the Lesh's really taking a full beat down.

Jenner wasnt a triathlete

whos got my hetti .pdf?

The amount of mistakes in the book is lazy at best..who edited this hack job...I guess as long as the “dirts” in there  facts are meaningless..kind of sounds like our current political situation...Selvin shld b embarrassed about all the things he got wrong..

^ like what?

>I think Jerry Hall disputed that<

Pete Townshend had something to say about it...

At a press conference announcing the Who's fall Quadrophenia tourtoday, Pete Townshend made a racy joke about Mick Jagger. "What I remember of the size of Mick Jagger's penis – I remember it as being huge and extremely tasty," the Who guitarist said, referencing Keith Richards' disparaging remarks on the topic in his 2010 memoir.

For starters Chimenti wasn’t in the 98 or 2000 other ones...Jerry’s coma was in 86 not 87...Trey ‘s first time singing Bertha in public was not at fare thee well...the last 09 dead shows were not at Shoreline they were at rothbury music fest on the 4th...lazy -pot shot writing at its finest...u can download a pdf cause there is a ton more u can read for yourself...

^thanks. wow. easy stuff there.

Lesh's should either say nothing or come out and claim "fake news" (seems to work for one guy on 3X% of US population)

Why? Just because some dates are wrong doesn't mean the shit about Jill is wrong.

Jelly, I admire your dedication to everything Phil.

>>>The Stones are still getting along - just saying

Only when the cameras are on.

Why? Just because some dates are wrong doesn't mean the shit about Jill is wrong.

Jelly, I admire your dedication to everything Phil. <<<

thanks sir...and I never said what he said about Jill is wrong ..I said we all already knew about it...and it’s more than just mistakes w dates..a ton of things are factually wrong..that’s lazy ..plain and simple.. and we don’t need innuendo’s that Jill was on steroids ..save that garbage for the tabloids ...

This is the tabloids.

^^^^

Selvin would disagree...he thinks it’s the final chapter in the GD legacy..

>Why? Just because some dates are wrong doesn't mean the shit about Jill is wrong.>>

Yeah, I mean what the fuck are facts when you can just throw around innuendo?  Really what were we thinking?

Phil has always been Phil.  Unicorn farts aren't his game.

I'm enjoying the book. Billy grabbing Jill's titties is the best part so far.

Just finished it.

It's a pretty good overview of the ins and outs since 1995. Sure there are errors but I give Selvin credit for putting it all together. Most of the major markers and turning points are in there.

It's a pretty strange book. Long before the GD ended and long before he had thoughts of this book, it appears that Joel Selvin did not care for Phil Lesh, either musically or personally. The take-down is just way too pervasive.

I've heard the theory that he needed a villain to sell the book but I dunno, Phil is an innocuous character in most overarching circles. I mean sure, there is a segment of people who think Phil/Jill are the devil and want them taken down but the universe is limited. Will arm-chair dead heads buy this book so they can get a glimpse of behind the scenes Phil and Jill drama? Maybe. Just seems like a stretch.

There are a myriad of points in the book that are debatable but Phil & Friends should certainly have received more credit. They get some props but it always comes with backhanded compliments. At one juncture Selvin credits the popularity of P&F with their conscious effort to play fast tempos. Hey guys just play fast and people will love it! As if it were that easy.

The fluffing of Fare Thee Well is bizarre. Maybe ending with a high note was something that he needed to do? Maybe Selvin really liked these shows. Maybe he heard from someone who liked these shows. Tough to say.

If they had done their job properly; you all wouldn't be able to read-still.

Yet, to write about your what you have just read & then I'm reading what you had written about what you had just read.

& here I am now, writing about this in its entirety.

Silly really; unless you get paid by the word.

This is Phil's fault?

>>>>If they had done their job properly; you all wouldn't be able to read-still.

if I had a nickel for every time I said that

hahaha

Here's the BBC doc 'Can't Take It With You' with an equal amount of dirt about the in-fighting over Jerry's estate. It has interviews with Annabelle Garcia, as well as the Deborah Koons and others. A wonderful addendum to FTW.

>>equal amount of dirt about the in-fighting over Jerry's estate

This BBC documentary is over 20 years old and filled with wanker inaccuracies.

The good news about the Gar-Estate, is that everyone has a role and gets along. The Garcia Estate is a well balanced-democratic business that is doing a very good job for Jerry's works.

The binding factor is big puppy-dog-like-Love for Jerry that just won't go away.

The man was very special & they all truly miss him ~

>>> It's a pretty strange book. Long before the GD ended and long before he had thoughts of this book, it appears that Joel Selvin did not care for Phil Lesh, either musically or personally. The take-down is just way too pervasive.

Selvin compared Phil to Ichabod Crane during a show years ago and got on the Leshes' shit-list. And once you're on it, you don't get off it. Bobby and Mickey are the only band members he talked to for the book.

I actually didn't think his treatment of the Leshes was THAT bad. I'd heard it was much worse before I read the book and I expected a total reaming. If you follow any of the Dead sites you knew Jill's ripped people off and treated people like shit for years so that was no surprise. Bobby's drinking/pill issues get mentioned a lot but Selvin also lauds him throughout and seems to personally like him. Mickey and Billy seemed like secondary characters for the most part. Especially Billy, although he tends to retreat to Hawaii frequently to fish and eat mushrooms.

Cult of Jerry

lol.

>you knew Jill's ripped people off

Never knew that.  Who got ripped off?

Kimock was making minimum wage in Phil and Friends.

>>>Kimock was making minimum wage in Phil and Friends.

That is actually standard operating procedure for most bands,  there is actually a pretty good documentary about how it all works called Hired Gun

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4026034/

I heard The Cure is an exception and everyone gets an equal share when they tour, but that may be bullshit.

If Kimmock wasn’t happy with what he was being offered financially, he should not have played in Phil’s band in the first place.

He left Friends mid tour, dropping a comment about not wanting to work on Maggie’s Farm anymore.  Derek Trucks replaced him.

Phil gave Derek credit for saving the tour.

Jill fired Parish and Ram Rod, and Kimock was tight with both. Angry and trying to stir up shit, Parish told Kimock to ask why he was making $500 a week. Jill erupted, Kimock bailed, and that was that.

Nothing could really happen to make me think less of Phil. Love the man. But Jill seems like a pretty terrible person, imo.

>>>>>Jill fired Parish and Ram Rod,

Supposedly for toking on the job and/or in her presence?

^ One toke over the line?

Sounds like Gail Zappa, but without all the lawsuits....

"I have always considered myself a very lucky man.  I've been married for more then twenty years to a woman who loves me as passionately as I love her, and with whom I have developed a level of trust and companionship that I never dreamed existed.  We are rearing two fine sons, both growing up straight and strong and loving.  I survived hepatitis C and a liver transplant.  I was born an only child but found my true brothers through the art of music and a series of improbable coincidences.  I am blessed with the joy of earning my way by doing something I love - something that is so deep it can never be boring, or run out of challanges."
