The whisper of conspiracy theories was strong in the aftermath of HST's death.
From all I have ever heard about the event, it seems clear that he consciously and deliberately put the bullet through his own head.
His health was in steep decline by all accounts. He wanted control of his own destiny while it was still his to control. I do not doubt that he saw his life in terms of literary history, and he saw the power of going out like his idol Hemingway.
Suicide is not an uncommon ending for quite a few men (and women) of letters. Suicide is considered cowardly, and/or a terrible sin by many people.
HST may have determined that going out by his own hand on his own terms was the most rational thing to do.
At the time of his passing, I thought that Thompson taking his own life with a gun didn't seem all that odd. It kind of fit with the way he'd lived. But this new reporting ("Anita told the former sheriff that the ex-wife of Juan and Jennifer's son was claiming that Jennifer had over the years said that Hunter's death had to be made to 'look like a suicide'"; a tangled web if I've ever seen one) makes it sound like Thompson might have had some help, or that something much darker had taken place.
Great scene. Show has a nice balance of comedy and drama.
Aa far as HST. I agree it didn't seem so off at the time. Seemed right down the middle. And if he wasn't doing well, it would make a lot of sense he would want to ease the pain as he has his entire life. but yes now a tangled web...
Didn't he leave this note or is that an urban legend. I thought it was known he committed suicide.
No More Games. No More Bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. Boring. I am always bitchy. No Fun – for anybody. 67. You are getting Greedy. Act your old age. Relax – This won’t hurt.
The death of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson two decades ago was ruled a suicide Friday by Colorado authorities — for the second time.
The original investigation into Thompson's February 2005 death at his home in Aspen from what local authorities described as a “self-inflicted gunshot wound" to the head, was revisited by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation at the request of his widow.
"The CBI’s review did not uncover any new physical evidence, facts, or circumstances to support a conclusion different from the 2005 investigation," the agency said in a statement.
That was quick. Here's what Anita had to say: "In a statement included with the C.B.I.’s news release, Anita said, 'I’m thankful for the kind and thorough work done by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation in their review of this case, and not a single attempt to overstep the ethical boundaries of a technical review, especially under such difficult circumstances. This allows all of us who loved Hunter to move forward with a clean conscience.'"

I hope this was his choice - still sad - and not a violent act based on perceived dollar signs.
Excess money creates either an energy of greed or benevolence. No real middle ground.
