New memoir from Jorma Kaukonen

Forums:

This just popped up on my FB page. Jorma has a memoir coming out on 8/28. This should be a great read. With a foreword by Grace Slick & afterword by Jack Casady. I’m looking forward to picking it up.

Vanessa Kaukonen offered to hand deliver copies of the new book prior to the official release date.

I'm guessing the early to mid 80's are a little spotty.

This ought to be a good read.

I just proudly bought from the Fur Peace Ranch, after waiting for some cash to come in.

The Jorma book just got delivered. Very happy about that ~

Looks great!

Thanks to the folks at the Fur Peace Ranch who have been patent with me as well

It comes with a new 5 song CD called :

"Been so Long"

1- Been So Long, 11/2/1998, The Barrel House, Cinn., Ohio

Probably for the best.  Human self-defense mechanisms smiley

Pretty good read so far.  I just finished through the part where he's learning finger-picking at Antioch College.  Pakistan, Egypt, The Phillipines, Finland...the guy got around.

Cool Dave.

Did yours come with a CD too?

Yes it did.   Haven't checked that out yet.

Sweet venue nestled in the hills, over looking San Jose. Fantastic show, Jorma & Jack are looking and sounding great!

Great seats too, you couldn't get any closer. thx

lol,  actually one could get a couple of rows closer. Just sayin..

Great show last night.  Some songs I hadn't heard in a while.  Was a little sad that the venue was only about half sold.  Those guys deserve a full house.

How was the sound? It was not great in Seattle, Portland and Eugene (see I don’t know Jack but I met Jorma thread).

I bought the Been So Long book last night at the Hot Tuna (Electric Trio +1) concert at Mountain Winery, and got it signed by Jorma after the show. Fabulous music, and a moment to shake hands and chat with one of my heroes made it it worth the trek up and down the windy road to this odd venue.

Great show. Many highlights. Music that puts me in a happy place (with my meat in the seat), and also blows my mind because these musicians are so fucking talented it's awe inspiring! All 4 of them played great together. The drummer is very good, very steady. So steady, I forgot he was there sometimes, which is quite a compliment for a drummer, from what I understand. He can hang with Jorma & Jack!

Sound was decent but not perfect. I was fine with it, but it could have been crisper and more balanced. I was near the front all the way to the right facing stage, so maybe it was more balanced in the center. I can understand complaints of wanting more high end, because Jorma and Steve Kimock were both awesome on guitar. But I would not want less low end because Jack Casady, also one of my heroes, is Such a Driving Force!!!!!!!!!!!

Hot Fucking Tuna

I finished reading "Been So Long" yesterday.  Jorma is a decent writer who has been gifted with a long life to reflect on.

Reading it, I couldn't help but think about parallels to Jerry Garcia.  Both emerged from the South Bay Folk Music scene to play lead guitar in bands at the forefront of the Bay Area Rock & Roll community.  Both had ancestral roots in Scandinavia, both taught guitar at South Bay music shops.  Both developed opiate addictions.

Somehow, Jorma trained year round for ice skating trips to Germany, Sweden and Norway to skate 400 Meter ovals throughout the 70s and into the early 80s with his first wife while they were both strung out.  I think that's what kept him alive.

The scene where he drops in on Jerry backstage at The Stone in 1982 as Jorma is leaving the Bay Area after a 20 year residence is bittersweet.  A tale of two different paths.  We all know how it ended for Jerry.  I'm glad Jorma lived through it to share his story and to continue to share his music.  I like how Jack talks of another 25 years of music ahead in his afterword.

The Fur Peace Ranch is a wonderful embodiment of the healing power of music and family.

Long Live Brother Jorma!

We used to hear about the skating trips when I lived in SF back in the late 70's, it was hard to believe at the time.  His honesty about his life and renewed spiritual quest is refreshing.

He won't even spell G-d.

He also admits to taking LSD fewer then ten times, not his cup of tea, but who would have thought?

Nice to see "In The Kingdom" on the set list!

I see Hot Tuna Electric is playing New Years Eve at Freight and Salvage in Berkeley.

(also playing there the 29th and 30th).

The New Year's show is billed as Acoustic and Electric.   Should be a good one.

He won't even spell G-d.<<<<

Delia used to do that too.

Was bummed they didn't play in SF (I don't have a car), that place is real nice though. It seems like playing in San Francisco is ideal if you want to get people from North South and East Bay (and a few from the city). Woulda been great at the Fillmore

Band sounds great though, aces! Jack and Jorma two of the greatest still standing.

Hi Ya ~

One person in that photo-would get "The Willys" if he saw this & was not on the road today -that-Al posted this photograph of him

Epic~

That's a cool photo, Alan. I've never seen it.  Looks like Jack Casady and Janis Joplin in the picture too.

Acoustic Hot Tuna Boulder Theater Friday, 12.14. I'm there.

Notice how the chicks always gravitate to the guitar player?

Not sure why it appears sideways. Uploading acceptable images is tough.

Embryonic Journey

Jorma made his first book reading and book signing + 3 songs in my friend Kyle's record store today. We were present for both events!

How lucky we are!

>>>>im guessing the early to mid 80's are a little spotty

What was surprising about this book is how he spent so much time on that particular period of personal and career lows.   Most rock books you read spend most of the time on the artists' glory years but not this one and he just breezed through his time with the Airplane.    Its really a book about redemption and recovery so I guess laying out all the dark periods in such detail is an important part of that narrative.

Agreed Ken.  It was an honest, soul-searching read.  A man for all seasons.  Thoroughly enjoyed it.
