lt matters because there are 1.4 billion Catholics and the institution has been around for close to 2000 years. I look at as the continuation of the Roman Empire that converted to all soft power, but it is real power.
I'm not going to defend the Catholic Church. I was raised Catholic and went to all boys Catholic high school so I've seen the decay and corruption up close and also because I don't believe in a magic man in the sky that takes attendance. That said, both of my wives ended up working for St. Vincent DePaul in SF. They run with the largest homeless shelter in the city as well as several homes for battered women and at one time ran a drop in center for homeless people to detox. That place was a circle of hell.
The people that ran that drop in center were Sister Katie and Father Frank, and I count it as a privilege to have known them for a while because no one walked the walk like they did. Also got to meet a bunch of Catholic Notre Dame grads who when they graduated college would spend a couple of years volunteering in the thousands of homeless shelters that the Catholics run.
So like the Yin and the Yang there are two sides. One un-apologetically evil, and one that dedicates their lives to helping those in the most need. It's gray not black and white.
But on the political side Pope John Paul - the first and probably only Polish Pope was named for one reason and one reason only. To help facilitate the downfall of the Soviet Union, and he delivered, but he was also an arch conservative, misogynist who elevated the culture wars particularly in the US. He also looked the other way on all the the child rape. So fuck him.
Pope Francis who just died and now Pope Leo are the continuation of the liberalization of the church that got paused while the Church helped bring down the Soviet empire. MAGA is right to lose their minds because this is directed directly at them and the oligarchs world wide. I don't know if it will make a difference, but it is way better than elevating one of the many right wing Cardinals they could have chosen.
Good point. I try to remember that that statement is true in almost all situations.
I should probably just stay out of this one. I have no love for the Catholic Church, but despite being raised in it and having a close family member deeply involved in it (a nun) I don't really know squat about it, except like in all situations there are good and not so good people involved.
Hopefully this guy will do some good, and if he's pissing off Trump and his toadies then that's a good start.

Is there 'good' in any of this?
I mean, it's the catholic church and politics.
A. One in the same
B. Both the vortex of evil.
C. Who the fuck cares? No matter who sits in those hallowed thrones, it's always same 'ol same 'ol.
And here comes the basket.
