Newark Shit Show

Forums:

I hope you aren't planning on flying out of there anytime soon or even worse connecting through there. This guy has been stuck there for six days on what was supposed to be a connecting flight.

That really blows.  I don't believe they can't get him anywhere.

I'm stuck in a perpetual loop at EWR with United and it's the most horrific experience I've ever had. I arrived on a 30m layover from Atlanta to Anchorage to make a flight on June . 24. It has now been repeatedly delayed, cancelled and rescheduled day after day, leading to my next attempt on June 29.

I've boarded and deplaned four times, and sat on the tarmac on the airport for almost 20 hours cumulative. We have had delays due to catering screws-up, baggage missing or jetway issues or departure gate delays, all leading to consistent pilot timeouts or catering food expiration or FA timeouts. It's a constant cycle of some sort of delay due to UA incompetence or the weather leading to pilot duty time out leading to huge delays for a relief crew leading to catering expiration leading to catering delays or equipment issues leading to flight attendant timeout then leading to pilot duty windows again. And massive crew shortages evidently.

Then you factor in the weather and I've now been living in the airport for three days. UA just told me they can't get me out anywhere until the 29th so I came into the City to buy my own hotel because I need to sleep. They told me they "ran out" of hotel vouchers and won't reimburse. There's no food vouchers. No cots left in EWR. No where to sleep.

One of the pilots who has been on a few of my flights over the weekend said I need to file an FAA complaint as he cannot believe how badly UA has screwed up my flights and what we are being told.

I've never, in decades of global travel, experienced anything like this.

Just horrible. Rant over. Time for sleep.

Wow the stories just get worse. Another guy was waiting for his flight from Newark to LA and it kept getting delayed. Six hours later they announced that they didn't have enough flight attendants, but they needed the plane in LA so they would be flying the plane empty, but everyone's luggage would be going to LA. According to him there are no seats available on any airline from NY to LA for 2 days. He said he was worried for the gate agents safety who made that announcement.

I didn't choose to see that United Airlines sub-reddit, but the algorithm put it in my feed probably because I recently flew United. If you are planning on going anywhere I would advise not reading it. You may never fly again.

My buddy's father has a United pass that allows him to fly anywhere anytime for free, but only on standby.  He was visiting from Oregon for the last week and was dropped off at EWR at the crack of dawn yesterday.  Booked a ticket just to get through security hoping he could get on a plane, any plane, heading west to get home.  My buddy had to drive back down to pick him up at midnight last night.  90 minute drive each way. Twice. Crazy.

Yeah apparently it is a good idea to avoid NY at all costs especially for connecting flights.

Let’s start with ARTCC’s (Air Route Traffic Control Center - They are going to control your flight during the enroute portion of your flight unless a tower is down and they need to issue a clearance. They are there to provide a safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic and prevent collisions.

Now the New York Center (ZNY)’s average training period is about 3.5 years (this is specific training to the job/area post-schooling for ATC).

They are currently at 66% staffing.

Now again, center is there to provide a safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of traffic, and prevent collisions. What happens if the controllers of the busiest airspace in the world get overloaded and miss something? That’s when air disaster videos are made.

Everything takes a backseat to safety in aviation, it doesn’t matter if you’re a pilot, dispatcher, controller, or mechanic.

Now we can get into TRACON’s (Terminal Radar Approach Control) - They do the same thing that center controllers do, but they handle approaches and departures.

New York TRACON is currently at 56% staffing.

I flew into Newark a couple of summers ago and it was awful.
I'm paying more to fly into Philly this summer. I miss Virgin Airlines.

When I flew United to the Bay Area in May, takeoff from Eugene was delayed for about 1 1/2 hours with us already on the plane because the pilots had timed out and had to be replaced. The flight attendants were so uncomfortable being the bearers of bad news... and having to deal with people whose connections were going to be missed. They were excellent.

The only time I've been east of the Rocky Mtn states was in the Newark airport in 1978 to connect to a People Express flight to Europe. Shuttled between terminals and took off. I miss People Express.

I was on one of the last flights on People's Express into Newark coming home from the GD's Chinese New Year run at the SF Civic at the tail end of January 1987. I don't recall any problems with the flight, but I do have some hazy memories that it was a coast-to-coast party, and not just for the passengers, but the flight attendants too.

Airline stuff aside, I have to ask: Isn't "Newark Shit Show" more than a little redundant?
