Notre-Dame is burning

Forums:

Terrible fire.  I love that cathedral.

I was very fortunate to be able to tour Notre-Dame back in 1975,  so devastating to see it on fire....

L’église est baisée

Oui

Whoever was getting over paid by millions to do more restoration work on this symbol of times that should have been forgotten fucked up and it's burning down.  That's basically all the fucks I can give towards this.

Tip of the day --
Never hire a Frenchman for a restoration project

Bummer, heading there in a few weeks.  Hopefully the Hunchback got out unscathed.

Huge treasure to humanity and a glorious building.

Enormous loss.

Phil knew what the monks could achieve in certain spots in these sacred, specificially designed (or tuned, if you will) spaces that work on so many levels. He talked about it one of his books and gets into how the buildings themselves are instruments that modulate and amplify certain frequencies.

Huge loss.

Great architecture is humbling and connective and we all need more of that.  Especially these days.

We need housing for the lesser wealthy.

We need traveling dental care in deepest Appalachia too.

crying broken heart

Not only is an enormous loss it's also a huge loss. Lol.

Commissioned by kings and built on the backs and purses of the poor...but yeah it's a real treasure to humanity.  Maybe 2019 Donald Trump humanity but it sure as hell isn't an example of my understanding of humanity.

It's also a gigantic loss, Sunshine.

Deadheads are usually pretty good at separating the art from the artist.

Maybe its really just selective rationalizing in the end.

Have a nice night Jonas.  Bless your heart.

>>> Deadheads are usually pretty good at separating the art from the artist. <<<

How can anyone deny how great the incredible flying buttresses are, the glass work, the carpentry of the ceiling, etc.? I celebrate the workmanship, the skill, the people who created the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris. It was breathtakingly beautiful. This is the same conundrum with which we are so often faced; the work vs the overlords. Fuck the overlords, I have no positive feelings about the religious origin of the cathedral, but I do believe in beauty and as 73guy said, the connective power of the place has huge value.

They should rebuild it with environmentally sustainable materials that aren't flammable.

It's a new century.

y'all down with junipero serra?

>>> y'all down with junipero serra? <<<

Not me, I'm not into enslaving/exploiting people, (see above post "Fuck the overlords") but the work on the California Missions is well done.

You, Turtle?

Quote from travel author Rick Steves:

"Seeing today's news about the fire at the Notre-Dame Cathedral has been heartbreaking.

Imagine the faith of the people who built this great stone wonder. They broke ground in 1163 with the hope that someday their great-great-great-great-great-great grandchildren might attend the dedication Mass, which finally took place two centuries later. Master masons supervised the construction, but the people did much of the grunt work themselves for free — hauling the huge stones from distant quarries, digging a 30-foot-deep trench to lay the foundation, and treading like rats on a wheel designed to lift the stones up, one by one.

And then imagine being a simple bareheaded peasant, entering the dim medieval light of the church for the first time. Take a minute to let your pupils dilate, then take in the subtle, mysterious light show that God beams through the stained-glass windows. And listen as the priest intones the words of the Mass that echo through the hall: Terribilis est locus iste — "This place is awe-inspiring." "

Sounds like the main structure survived and I am sure they will do a good job restoring the wooden parts.  Hoping all hunchbacks are safe and accounted for.

Some contractor is in deep doo-doo.  Not the way to start the  work week . Doh!

Some contractor is in deep doo-doo<<<

If it was the case, definitely yes ... although I can't help but wonder about whether this was intentional?

Regardless if it were somehow an act of "terrorism" or a "false flag", there aren't many better targets to pour gasoline on to nudge a world even further along re: pulled apart by the seams on ideological fronts.  I have no proof & it's purely wild speculation about possibilities.

Back to possibility of contractor:  one would think there'd be insanely strict protocols for a building of this stature and age?!?    Before every show at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, a member of the staff makes an announcement about how there's zero tolerance for smoking (even vaping) in light of it being an historic structure just over 100 year's old ... which is not even close to the age of some historic structures in New England ... let alone Notre Dame.   You'd think everyone who worked on it would be required to take some sort of class, if not sign off on a checklist of "do's and dont's"?

Pat Bagley from today's Salt Lake Tribune.

Sad.  One of my favorite things to do when traveling is to visit cathedrals.

Have they determined what started the fire yet?

Evangelicals?

Equating the perverse actions of the Catholic Church, the poor that are fleeced daily in the name of Catholic guilt, & the generations of poor that Notre Dame was built by with a guitar player is false equivalency defined.  No worries the art & relics are safe. The stained glass stations of the cross will be built. No worries, the donations are already lining up to go right in the pocket of the church. The building insurance & the contractors insurance will more than pay for the fire but yeah... art

Ray, Terry and Bunchie Donovan?

From the first article Ken linked-  "Holden Matthews, the 21-year-old son of a Louisiana sheriff’s deputy, had been arrested in connection with a series of church fires in Louisiana’s St. Landry Parish."

So, the sheriff's son is an arsonist.

Jonas-  were you diddled by a Catholic priest?

>>> So, the sheriff's son is an arsonist.

White Nationalist Domestic Terrorist?

I feel like Jonas could use a hug.

You both sound stupid but that’s ok. I’ll back off.

>You, Turtle?<

no, but my street is named after him.

my crazy photog on instagram says this is like the wtc fires and is unexplainable...

<<< I’ll back off

lol.

Jonas, what no Taj Mahal bashing ?

Great Wall ?

Brooklyn Bridge ?

Poor twisted lad

Jonas refused to go to the top of the Washington Monument on his sixth grade school field trip because it was built by slaves.

He also had "No Blood for Oil!" written on his Trapper Keeper in spray paint marker for the entirety of 8th grade.

Any zoners at the vigil?

I’ve spent a lot of time there over the years, the picture I posted is from 2014 which was the last time I visited.  It is a World Heritage Site and the awesomeness of it can’t really be explained.  Like many things it has to be experienced (go to the show).  Art, history, culture, religion, architecture, human endeavors, the city of Paris itself are all part of it but being there is so much more than the sum of those parts.  Peace

"NOTRE DAME is not a myth. Notre Dame is not a theory. Its interest does not spring from ignorance but from knowledge; from a culture complicated with a hundred controversies and revolutions. It is not featureless, but carved into an incredible forest and labyrinth of fascinating features, any one of which we could talk about for days. It is not great because there is little of it, but great because there is a great deal of it. . . . Notre Dame, on its merely human side, is mediaeval civilization."

-G.K. Chesterton: in "Fancies Versus Fads" (1923)

12th century stone work was built to last.

Not a peep from Trump about these fires.

How many schools can be built with a billion dollars?

4chan dupe says what?

A little boy calling me a lad?

Sarah, just stop.

Stop what?

Jonas doesn't seem to be weathering the Trump era very well.

Hug offer is still on the table, btw.

Lemme guess.  He suggested more gold.

Give them a few fallen redwoods and sequoias.

Weep not long,
Oh gentle Paris...
When the flame fell like a spire
As if painted on a Brugel's plague
Where the saints consume with fire

Weep not long
Oh mighty Paris...
Should all of heaven's gargoyles fall
And remain to grow from tannoned branch...
Into Ur sacred hall
That stood against even it's own
In sanctuary's need...
Beyond even the rights of man
Or nicene of creed...

Weep not long,
Beloved Paris...
For we all do love U still
And that which burns shall be rebuilt,
It's lore unfolding still...

I just threw up a little in my mouth.  John Popper, as usual, is looking for a little attention.  I weep for fat donna, you stole his girl, knocked her up and then after such devoted love dumped and divorced her....  Such a sweet man.   Oh gentle paris... BLAAHHHH!!

4chan dupe, unless you need a constant reminder of what a dupe you are I'd stop referencing anything to do with the last election.  Why would my distaste of hypocritical people -- im gay and donate to the church HURRAY!, i go to church after I fuck my mistress -- have anything to do with Trump?

It's hilarious that the french tout a separation of church and state yet the state(country) owns all the churches worth any coin?!??

I went to an outdoor book sale one time in Skokie and John Popper was there signing stuff.  It was kind of sad.

How did this 4chan dupe reference get started?  Has it been noted in the zoner lexicon?

What a strange hill to die on.

Go nuts, Jonas.  Do whatever you like.

(For the record, I've never even been to the Chans and youve displayed you have no patience for nuance, so know that your perception is wholly wrong.)

Now show us on the doll where Monsignor O'Malley touched you.

Did this turn into a pixxagate/Seth Rich thread?

>>>>Now show us on the doll where Monsignor O'Malley touched you.

ive got a friend who told me that his brother thankfully walked in on him and one of their priests while the priest was about to sexually abuse him, not for the first time. it wasn’t a real lighthearted conversation.

unfortunately, this shit happened MANY MANY times over. to joke about it now after the billions of dollars in settlements is showing some ignorance.

Besides, who referenced the last election?

I'm talking about all the time having nothing to do the election since then that you seem to be struggling.

Clearly this is a chip on your shoulder youve been waiting to shoehorn in at the first opportunity though so have at it again.

(Its not like I dont already know how you feel on this, lol)

<<<Did this turn into a pixxagate/Seth Rich thread

lol.

Not unless you someone brought up Bill Clintons 30+ flights on the "Lolita Express" private plane to Jeffrey Epstein's island.

<<<now after the billions of dollars in settlements is showing some ignorance.

There's a lot of ignorance to go around regarding this subject.

All I'm saying is that Jonas' anger here is misplaced.

Now for a tangent that isnt a tangent and is sure to drive Jonas nuts....

What do we know about the Tartarian Empire?

Not much these days, but there is possibly a whole lot there.

>>>>>>but there is possibly a whole lot there.

What is this guy talking about?

It's definitely crazy Knot, I wouldnt worry about it.
