NW Zoner Rockhounding Trip Feeler Thread

Forums:

Hey ya bunch of Zoners!

As many know, I enjoy scavenging the wilds of the world for rocks, and was thinking, now that we're all getting vaccinated, it's about time we do a Zoner rockhounding trip!  There's many options for places to go and things to dig, but right now just putting a feeler out to gauge interest.

These could be short trips, only taking up an hour or 3 in the field (Carnelian at Fall Creek Res, Lane County OR, ex), or overnighters to a much larger variety of places.

I've got virgin old growth at my Bohemia claim outside of Cottage Grove, that can be an overnighter or day trip.  (warning, 5,200' elevation for my fellow trashed lung friends).  It's an old gold mine, but rockhounding for stibnite (antimony sulfide) crystals the cool deal there, along w/ many types of sulfides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, etc).

Even just camping up in Quartzville and relaxing on the river sounds fun!

There's fossil locations along the coast i've been wanting to visit too!

I haven't stayed current on land status in Central / Eastern Oregon, but I know a lot of the spots I went to decades ago are now closed.  But think there's still open areas at the Green Wood spot on Hampton Butte (green petrified wood, many types of colorful jasper / agates), Glass Butte (many types of obsidian), Sunstone down by Plush, etc.  Those would obviously be overnighters (or more).

Here's a few samples;

Fall Creek Carnelian (many other types of agates, but the harder to find carnelian the prize!)

Wow! Thanks for the offer.

Kai and I would be interested in joining you sometime.  Our cars cannot handle rugged terrain.  We're up for hiking, camping, and/or backpacking.

I generally need to give 3 day notice for vacation leave.

This sounds like a great opportunity, Noodler, but I'm doubtful I could make the trip.

Zoning and Stoning 2021. Wish I could join

Do we have to know something about rocks, or can we join and ask lots of questions?

I have dabbled in rock hounding and would be up for it depending on the dates.   I already have some trips and other things planned this summer, but unless there is some scheduling conflict, I would probably be into it.

Sounds like there's some interest, so that's cool.  Again, many options, from day trips for locals,  to more elaborate adventures with folks from far and wide.  The funny part about geology, like most science, questions only generate more questions, becomes exponential, we've already proven the books wrong in several situations while trying to figure out mysteries, so it's an interesting process. They say geology is all about drinking and guessing (suppose we're more successful because of dosing and puffing, LOL).

If it could happen on a 3-day weekend, I'd love to go.
Oregon Zoner Jam Rock reunion  ;)

A day trip near the Corvallis area would be cool, but would have to be easy/low elevation gain hiking or car access for us old folks.

Fall creek res. carnelian is a great local spot for a short afternoon trip.  Just SE of Eugene near Lowell.  We'll often stop at the BBQ place where they filmed the bar scene in Animal House afterwards, it's just down the road from many a prankster home.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I love Oregon carnelian, t-eggs, and opal! Zeolites look cool too.

A one night camping there might be fun.

Do you also find rocks via kayak?  If so, I've got a few extras....although one is for sale.

Makes me miss living in the yurt out in fall creek. I'm not much for scratching at the dirt, but wouldn't be opposed to a swim and a smoke with some good zoners.

I would be down for this but would have to bring my dog.
