Winter Jazzfest is a beacon of the New York City jazz scene gathering leading musicians from around the world.

Some tasty lineups over the course of this festival.

Despite my increasing lean toward jazz over the years, I consider it yet another sign of my decrepitude that out of that very long list of artists I have only heard of nine or ten of them, and am a real fan of just two or three.

I am old, and in the way.

Sigh.

Still, you kids GTTS now, ya' hear?

I'm interested in knowing the two or three you singled out, Lance.

Due to biffing the link, here's the poster. I feel like it's actually a pretty accessible varied lineup, with some nice surprises and crowd-pleasers thrown in there...

Well, I guess after looking again, there are a few more who I know and would go see.

I'm a huge fan of Jason Moran, and I also like Ambrose Akinmusire, Aaron Parks & Immanuel Wilkins. In general I love Karl Denson and would assume that in this setting his "Project" group is more jazz focused, and I would be interested in hearing that.

Obviously I know Esperanza Spalding, and while I have found her to be a bit overrated as a bass player, depending on her group that would probably be good too, and Terri Lynn Harrington is fine and always plays with the best people.

Overall, I'm sure that many if not most of those acts are excellent, but looking at that list I just find it to be a bit of a personal reminder that I swim in the shallow end of knowing today's younger artists.

Which is actually a good thing, because it means that despite popular opinion jazz is far from dead, with many brilliant young players continuing to rise, embracing improvisation and many traditional jazz values while adding their own unique imprint on the music.

Hopefully I'll stumble upon a few of them the same way that in the past I stumbled upon many who are now considered the older guard.

Anyone who frequents the Bach Dancing & Dynamite Societ strikes me as a strong swimmer... I mean, the Pacific Ocean is right there in the front yard!

Some of the older guard guys who I think you may have heard thru osmosis, or else would probably enjoy (I think), Lance: Joe Lovano, Donald Harrison, David Murray... some of the younger players that got an exclamation point from me, Brandee Younger, Ava Mendoza (who has got a great power trio thing with William Parker), Rafiq Bhatia, Carlos Nino (if you don't mind a little New Age), Joel Ross... and some of the journeyman players who have been out there doing their thing that will definitely bring it, Tomeka Reid (she can do just about anything), Craig Taborn, Joshua Abrams, Chad Taylor...

I love this lineup.

And I love Immanuel Wilkins.

I need to listen to this tomorrow

Luke Stewart is dope

>> Mayan Space Station

I got a copy of this on vinyl when it released. It is awesome.

Irreversible Entanglements are intense. Checking out Luke Stewart Exposure Quintet right now. He is, indeed, dope.

This is just a ludicrous lineup; an embarrassment of riches. Nice little all-evening Marc Ribot lineup at the Bowery Ballroom, but that tribute to Pharoah Sanders is just stacked.
