In my experience it is usually filled with drunk people shouting at one another as they stare at their phones which kind of mitigates the great sound in the room.

Well, its a venue in a casino. The smart play is to try to keep it to weeknight shows and stay as far away from the bar (meaning as close to the band) as possible. Cologne and leather jacket folks are generally a non-issue up front.
But yeah, a very frustrating thing at times I agree. Worse when its just people coming in on vacation (Tahoe) who would be just as happy getting smashed to any old generic entertainment. something about one in ten thousand coming for the show...
Its really a special thing when a blizzard whips up, shuts the roads down, but the band and a few of the fans have already safely rolled in. Magical.
Love Crystal Bay, I've seen some folks having too much fun there, but some really great appreciative audiences too, sometimes in the same night. Saw one of the rowdiest late-era NRPS shows ever there. Ronnie Penque stepped to the mic and said "I want some of whatever you guys are taking"... It's a great room with great bookings and very tolerant management, in a very chill town.
Are you qualifying that, i.e. it's the best sounding club room or small rock room, or are you saying it's better than the likes of Carnegie Hall, various great symphony halls & jazz clubs and other similar venues?
I've never been there, it's juuuuust a bit out of the way, but I've heard that it's damn fun, and also that it can be a bit too much of a party room.
Talking about clubs here, not symphony halls. Indoor rooms not originally purpose-built for live sound. Yeah it's a claim I guess. I can think of a few real good ones, but can't think of a better sounding one. Being honest here. Timber framed construction and Meyer sound. To my ears, this is the one two combo that really can't be beaten.
In my opinion, you can "hear" and "feel" the room's dynamics better in David Nelson Band's 2009 show on archive than any other recording. Give it a listen with a solid dose of volume. When I need a dose of crystal bay, this is the reference recording. Lots of facemelts in there for sure. Some do go a bit too hard. For me, the sonic bliss is usually enough. Probably forty or so people at that dnb show. YMMV.
I was there. Great show. Fun time. I think almost the whole audience(mostly all Nelson Heads) stuck around after the show for a party out back. Yeah. Fun times.
We drove straight there after the show at Moes in Santa Cruz and got a good nights/days sleep before the show.
