Olympics?

Forums:

Anyone watch the Opening Ceremonies  I can't figure out if it was interesting or not.Great job with the Paris background; Kelly Clarkson?  Peyton Manning? WTF

My wife and I didn't care for it. We're not very artsy.  Tower lights were ok.

Im ready to hear that Olympic intro fanfare with the kettle drums not to be confused wlth the George of the Jungle theme.

Instead of a Superbowl halftime show, that went on for 4 hours, it was a lot more busking in the streets of Paris, spy vs spy torch traversing, library Ménage à trois, atheletes on boats...   strobing tower...

I'm glad I went to the Lido once....   (75)

I enjoyed it! to bad it was pouring cats n dogs  for me Amazing show great organisation tuff job great work by all involved Thanks Paris je vous aime

That Imagine was breathtaking

Celine was AMAZING!!! What an inspirational performance. The highlight for me. I can see why Kelly was so choked up.

Gaga? Meh. The fashion show? Gag me. What a waste. Menage a trois? F that. Need to go back and see "Imagine" again. I had to go for take-out. My wife said it was tres bien. Just MNSHO.

I watched some of it again with my daughter and followed along with the comments from the NY Times. The Times provided background and context that made it more interesting. For example, I learned that the metal band was playing a song from the French revolution instead of Kelly Clarkson's 'omg a metal band'.

Celine for those that missed her. With what she's dealing with? WOW!  https://twitter.com/i/status/1817038520281895237

I can't tell you how much I hated it. They fucked over all those athletes who never get to stand in a stadium of people cheering for them so they could make a Paris tourist and river boat manufacturing ad. Then they made Lady Gaga sing where people usually go to take a piss.

The conservative Christians are really butt hurt over the ceremony.

Spain's El Pais said the ceremony sent "to the world a message of universalism, tolerance and also modesty,"

Fox news: "Olympics opening ceremony sparks outrage with drag queens parodying Last Supper: 'Gone completely woke"

The governor of Utah posted on Twitter, and for some reason, I felt obligated to answer.

Spencer Cox: It was a 4-hour long opening with lots of rain and apparently we missed a few things. I’m seeing video of a blatant mockery of a sacred event that my faith cherishes (the Last Supper of Christ). I can’t wait for the opening ceremonies in 2034 (like 2002) to showcase Utah values and our commitment to building family and community.

I answered...

So you're thinking some scenes with plural wives & Warren Jeffs and his buddies marrying and sexually violating young girls against their will, as they did for years?

Or the phony 2002 tributes to Utah's Native inhabitants as you prepare to stick a 480 foot tower in Bears Ears?

>>They fucked over all those athletes who never get to stand in a stadium of people cheering for them <<

Really?

Even in the rain they all looked super happy and excited to be involved in the boat parade.

Never seen people smiling & waving so hard.
There will be plenty of stadium cheering during the games.
I suppose they will all weigh in on whether or not they were "fucked over".

I for one applaud the french artistry and attempt at something other than traditional boredom.

>>> I for one applaud the french artistry and attempt at something other than traditional boredom. <<<

I also applaud it. I saw a lot of it and enjoyed it, thought it was just weird and fun enough. The art was great.

First year for surfing and skateboarding

And John John is riding right now

I love watching the swimmers. As an added bonus, Snoop Dog was in the nautatorium cheering on the swimmers.   I can honestly say, i didn't see that cameo coming...lol.

I learned today that way back when, the Olympics awarded medals to artists!

The Paris Olympic committee would have certainly won one... I thought it was a brilliant use of the Seine and elevated examples of what France is known for: creativity, fashion, art, revolution, liberty and craftsmanship that endures.

I sang along to the national anthem, La Marseillaise, and was thrilled that they pulled off such a creative event at that scale. The French and the Spanish are so deft at political sarcasm and edgy humor... the event made fun of the world's stereotypes of France and did it with class.... the segment on the ménage a trois was so well done and surely was poking back at the stereotype of the puritanical U.S. .

It's not about the stadium.

>>>all those athletes who never get to stand in a stadium of people cheering for them

El Nino, I think they'll have that chance, maybe at the closing ceremonies (?), but that was what did it for me in 2002.

I got VERY VERY lucky and was able to buy an $880 ticket to the opening ceremonies for $260 outside the stadium about an hour before from someone with an extra. On the way in, the guy was complaining he couldn't talk any of his friends into going and said they were supposed to be good seats. I told him I'd buy some beers to help with what little cash I had left. I warned him I planned on booing George Bush when he was announced and he replied "Ya know, I'm starting to feel better about this." And we did boo George Bush very loudly, angering an old boy near by.

No beers allowed at the college stadium, but when I went to find my seat with some Cokes in hand, the woman usher pointed to a seat on the front row and said "You're right there." Doing my best Bob Uecker ("I must be in the front row") I headed down.

The best part was, just to our right was the tunnel where the athletes emerged from, and I got to see the faces of the athletes as they entered the stadium and realized their dream of reaching the Olympics. THAT is what I'll always remember. Almost felt like a voyeur, but it was touching to revel in their personal joy that took so much to achieve. It didn't matter the country, even just 5 months after September 11th. These were humans reaching their dream. We cheered 'em all. And the people of the world were closer. A highlight in my life for sure.

Yeah, I hope these athletes get that chance, too.

Up and ready to watch our great Women's Gymnastics Team!

My friend's niece is Mina Stess she is skateboarding this year.  Be sure to cheer her on!

At the end of the day the opening ceremony was a made for TV spectacular and it was spectacular. I just prefer that it be a live event that gets televised rather than a made for TV event that a few people get to show up for. I still think all those athletes that compete in obscurity like the rowers, archers, fencers, water polo, and judo missed out on the one time they get to stand in a stadium full of people cheering for them particularly after they competed in empty stadiums at the last Olympics.

Either way the surfers in Tahiti would have missed out one way or the other but probably better than surfing in Normandy.

Hard Pass - have boycotted the Olympics since i saw what a clusterfuck and pieces of shit the IO and AO Cs are in reality in the ATL in '96...

local boy colapinto goes down.

found it super hard to find to watch. confusing and should have been spotlighted not on some god damned fucking peacock app.

I'm surprised anyone still cares about the Olympics....

Been enjoying the surfing, skateboarding, mountain biking, basketball, gymnastics

Aside from being a total colossal waste of resources as well as a political football I think the athletes representing our country deserve support and respect

i also think it is good for world peace.

so, i guess all the little xchristian soldiers have their panties in a bunch over some confusion about the last supper/Dionysus snafu....blue balls make people angry.

This is the kind of thing that makes the Olympics a completely unique event in the world.

Lily Zhang and three teammates from the United States table tennis team were hanging out on a large boat last Friday, making small talk with the N.B.A. star Stephen Curry — as one does at an Olympic opening ceremony — when he asked what sport they played.

They told him, and his eyes lit up.

“Can I borrow you for a second?” Curry asked.

Moments later, the four table tennis players found themselves engaged in a brief but spirited debate with Curry and his teammate Anthony Edwards about whether Edwards, one of basketball’s brightest young talents, could notch a point against them on the table. The friendly trash talk was captured on camera and eventually watched by more than 15 million people online.

On one hand, the table tennis players said, it was one of those extraordinary, and extraordinarily funny, interactions that can happen only at the Olympics. On the other hand, they said, they have interactions like this all the time....

On Monday in Paris, Zhang played what she called one of the best matches of her life to reach the round of 16 in the singles tournament, the deepest she has advanced at the Olympics. After clinching the last point, she fell to the ground in tears.

Witnessing the proceedings was none other than Edwards, who had come to cheer in the stands. The table tennis players, when they heard, could not believe it.

“They said they would come,” Sung said of the N.B.A. players, laughing. “But we thought they were lying.”

i love the Olympics.  almost entirely for the incredible lifelong effort it takes to even qualify to participate, make it through semi's, and then compete for a medal.

The best of the best, at this exact point in tme, from the world over.

On Simone Biles' final floor routine for team usa yesterday. during one of her amazing twists and flips through the air, she peaked at 11' 8" off the floor....from a person who is 4' 8" tall.

Then.....there was a brief episode where Snoop Dog was swimming in a pool with Michael Phelps, and briefly afterwards hanging on the side of the pool and talking about 'lung power' .....lol.

Love the South Koreans and North Koreans taking a selfie together.

what if one of the chinese women had to go out in that? ( the inexperience...not her gender or nationality, nat...)

Hope Kim Jung Un doesn't send these kids to re-education camps. The spirit of what we hope for.

If the people will lead, the leaders will follow?

With Rebeca Andrade of Brazil taking the gold and Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles taking the silver and bronze, the podium for the medal ceremony in the women’s floor exercise could prove to be iconic.

“She’s so amazing. She’s queen,” Biles said of Andrade on Monday. “And first it was an all-Black podium, so that was super exciting for us. But then Jordan was like, ‘Should we bow to her?’ And I was like, ‘Absolutely.’ So we’re like, ‘Are we gonna do it now?’ And then, that’s why we did it.

“But she’s, she’s such an excitement to watch. And then all the fans in the crowd, always cheering for her. So, it was just the right thing to do. She’s sweet.”

Chiles said she wanted to make sure that Andrade got the praise that she felt the Brazilian deserved and that the new gold medalist is one of the kinder competitors to go up against.

“You know, she’s an icon, a legend herself,” Chiles said. “So I feel like being recognized is what everybody should do when it comes to somebody who’s put in the work, put in the dedication. So yeah, in that moment, I was like … first off, again, yes, it was an all-Black podium.

“Second off, why don’t we just give her flowers? She’s given, you know, not only has she given Simone her flowers, but a lot of us on in the United States our flowers as well. So giving it back is what makes it so beautiful. So I felt like it was needed.”

>>>>>>the sportmanship, outstanding

Exactly, Fabes. Years of training. They all understand what they've gone through.

Not a giant fan of Djokovic, but seeing him so emotional after, I had to feel good for him. His last remaining prize.

This is what turns me off about some US sports, especially NBA basketball. The "you're a punk and I'll destroy you" mentality. Staring competitors down. Get a clue. So you can put a ball in a basket. BFD.

Most decorated gymnast of all time loses a round and literally bows to her competitor

that's some GOAT shit right there

pure class

Julian Alfred from St Lucia womens 100

Thea LaFond-Gadson from Dominica womens triple jump

It was really incredible to see these two win the first ever medals for their home countries, and gold at that.

lot of Carib kids are going to grow up chasing their Olympic dreams now just because of these two women. Wow

Slick, not so much a fan of the professional athletes in the Olympic's, kinda like what NIL has done in NCAA football. It is unavoidable, and that's why I like watching alll the non-professional type of events more than most of basketball, golf, tennis. I love the NBA but I have not watched any of the basketball.

Track and Field, even though professional this sport still resonates with me though. Some of these events have been with us since man first stood upright.

Track and Swimming- how low can they go?  breaking records you thought could not be broken again, and again, or better yet, just shattering old records.

Skateboarding and Biking, what crazy feat will the be next impossible move?

amazing what we humans are capable of

What happened to the kettle drum olympics song?

Total class

Kettle Drum song, does ABC own the rights to that one?

I would be willing to tryout for the Kettle Corn Team

1500 is such a great race

You guys mean the Olympic fanfare that John Williams wrote for 84?

Great win.

Not sure , Fishcane. It might be an exert. It could be an ABC exclusive.

The first 45 seconds are “Bugler's Dream” by Leo Arnaud, immediately followed by “Olympic Fanfare and Theme” by John William<<

I like that, Fabes. Can we hope for a pic together like the Koreans?

Can you believe that Baltimore Ravens player barking about Jordan and Simone honoring Rebeca?

“This is literally disgusting,” Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey wrote with a photo of the moment.

Shut the hell up, dude. What a dink.

Everyone can be a star on social media, just let it rip, I guess.

This is the only place I let my stupidity shine, IG is the only social media I am on but it's more for sharing food cooking clips and funny clips with my kids. Keep your head down and don't get shot

The Steeplechase has always seemed a little sadistic to me, but what a great race today.

What is IG?

How and the hell do these women volley ball players go out there with long nails. Don't they just snap off all the time?

Only in the Olympics can Japan win gold in break dancing. Sorry if I ruined this for those of you taping it for later viewing.

I was really looking forward to the breaking but it just didn't "work" for me. I only watched 3 battles before turning it off.

amit elor (usa) winning the womens wrestling in such dominant fashion was probably my favorite this week. When she wrestled the Mongolian girl and got her in a leg lock, she just started death rolling her like an alligator racking up points. It was pretty surreal. She's 20 years old and hasn't lost a sanctioned match in five years. I think only one opponent at these games was even able to score a point on her. She was ineligible to compete in the Tokyo games because she was too young by one day.

and the Canadian hammer thrower with the mustache. Again, just completely dominant

I have to admit I was not watching the US Serbia basketball game until my son texted me after the 3rd quarter and asked if I was watching the US get spanked. I tuned in wanting Serbia to beat them and I got caught up in the comeback, and turned my allegiance back to the USA, and was swept back into the emotions of it all. We have three of the top 10 players of all time on this team, and they turnt up, especially Curry.I loved it!

Now that USWNT is focused on soccer and not being woke, they're back in the gold medal match.  First time since 2012 Olympics.

Tomorrow 8am PST is the match.

Dont'cha just hate people who are woke, Racket?. Wait. What does that mean again? Please fill me in.

For the few pin traders in Paris, the Snoop pin is popular.

Snoop Pin 2.JPG

I want that pin

Did a search - here's what I found.

Snoop Dogg’s Olympic pin has become a highly sought-after collectible during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Many people are curious to know if this pin is available for purchase and how to get their hands on one of these pins.

In this article, we will reveal the answers to these questions and inform readers if they can acquire the pin.

How to get Snoop Dogg’s Olympic pin

The pin features the famous rapper blowing smoke rings in the colors of the Olympic rings. It is not available for public sale and is not officially licensed by the International Olympic Committee.

The pin gained significant attention when U.S. tennis star Coco Gauff showcased hers on social media. She thanked the rapper for the amazing and unique pin by saying, “Hey Mr. Snoop, thank you for this pin. This is the best pin that I’ve ever gotten.” The International Tennis Federation (ITF) shared a picture of this pin on X (formerly Twitter), which received over 5 million views. Snoop Dogg, who serves as a correspondent for NBC during the Olympics, personally distributed these pins, increasing their popularity and value as collectibles.

Members of the New Zealand women’s rugby sevens team also set their sights on obtaining this coveted pin. “We have a new challenge, guys,” Alena Saili posted on TikTok on Tuesday. “A Snoop Dog pin!!”

Can you buy the Snoop Dogg Olympic pin?

No, you cannot buy the Snoop Dogg Olympic pin.

The pin is not for sale because it is not licensed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and Snoop Dogg is giving a limited number exclusively to U.S. athletes.

In conclusion, the pin is a unique and exclusive gift given to select U.S. athletes. Its rarity and unavailability for purchase make it a highly sought-after piece of Olympic memorabilia.

Kinda surprised. The Oly folks are usually very attentive in protecting trademarks. Those colored rings? I found that out when I did my scandal song in 2002.

They actually wanted a 103 year old company, Mt Olympus Waters, named after a mountain in Utah, to change their name because it was too close to the O word.  But I'm about to reproduce a YT video (someone took the first one down) using images so I may be finding out soon.

I wrote a song about how they killed the coyote Oly mascot as it wandered down into San Juan County and they shot it iin the federal bounty program that gave hunters $20 for the scalp.
