Only DAB

Forums:

Norway has become the first country to abandon FM radio broadcasts for Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB).

Other countries are watching, as DAB may be the future.

Looking forward to DAB too?

A little dab'll do ya.

I'm am very fond of the term DAB.

People going crazy over dabs.

They took down the FM radio signals in the north of Norway the other day, and now lots of people up there have no signal. The coverage isn't as good as expected. We're pissed off by the DAB introduction for several reasons. They forced it upon us in spite of all the warnings. It's gonna be a major political issue soon as they take away FM in other parts of the country with more people. I don't think Government will survive the election next September.

Great to hear your account of this. It's surprising they would allow it if it meant no signal for folks. I suppose living in the north of Norway, FM could be very important.

Yes, thanks for the man-on-the-scene report!

And just to put a little more sugar on the cake, they took down the original DAB signals as well, replacing it with DAB+, requiring the population to buy new radios or adapters for our homes, cars and cabins leaving the original DAB tuners obsolete and useless. I can smell the deal. In a few years we'll probably see the introduction of DAB+Extra, making way for another full scale tuner replacement.
Not to mention the sound quality we get with DAB+. I've seen horror accounts talking about 32 kb/s per stereo channel, and they call it "very good sound".

Perfect cross-platform AD campaign by Norway.

I like FM radio, but I have excellent content to choose from. One nice thing about Eastern Bloc life.
